Re: [Deck] Vial Goblins

Sadly I sold all my vial deck materials, but that is a 4-of. Insane value.

It also has some really neat combos if you have either Krenko or kiki-jiki on top of your deck

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I see no reason why we should ban anything other than Veil (and maybe T3feri, %$#% that card) at the moment. The moment that Discard and Counterspells are relevant again, Modern can breathe again. Most people that I've seen calling for bans is calling for Arcum's Astrolabe and nothing else. :thinki...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

This change is fair, although I would've preferred the Mulligan change. It's a big hit for some Lurrus decks but not others (the more aggressive the more punishing), for Yorion decks this seems rather inconsequential. My Modern control decks apparently will all be 80 cards from now on.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Very excited for Monday, I really am curious what they will do with Companions. In standard, Tef3 should be the ban. If they just take a piece from Lukka, the next big boomy thing will become the top tier. You just get to slam a bunch of 5 and 7 drops in standard now without the usual risk of gettin...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I found that quote too, but around the drama of Oko functional errata also came up and in my mind there was an "when, not if" quote from Maro. I also think errataing a card from 15 years ago mostly for aesthetic reasons is a completely different question from fixing one of the most broken ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

If they actually wanted to balance it. You want to do this a "Draw hand, put N+1 to the bottom where N is times mulliganed, add companion to hand." You do "Draw hand, put N to the bottom where N is times mulliganed, then randomly put 1 card on the bottom of your library. Add companio...

Reading between the lines here, there's a huge community push for changing the Companion mechanic and Mark did his very best to dig for a question of the one single loony who would be upset by it

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

About Project Modern; I made a thread in the General discussion forum about Community Managed formats, but it (poetically) didn't really get going. https://www.mtgnexus.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=25239 IMO, with talk between the Vintage, Legacy and Modern Community of making a pre-WAR format, ther...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I said it before: banning Lurrus will make the next companion dominant, and once that one gets banned another one will. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. Having a guaranteed strong free creature as your 8th card every game willl keep warping formats until they change how Companion works as a me...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Changing the rules for Companion is my preference, too. I actually do think the concept of it is very interesting, the problem is just that the cost of running a companion is much too low for how good the payoff is. I think that, after mulliganning, having to replace one of the cards in your hand wi...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I feel that if the ban is just going to be Lurrus, we'll just be playing musical chairs for the next Companion; once Lurrus is banned Yorion will take over, and after that some other one; Obosh in Legacy lets you play Delver, Ponder, Brainstorm, Force of Negation and Force of Will just fine. Eventua...

Community Managed Formats

Every time any kind of ban happens in any format, somewhere you will find a discussion of the community of said format wanting to take their ball, go home, and manage their own banlist since clearly they could do a better job than WotC. With how controversial the last year has been, this discussion ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

the paper price of Lurrus is already going crazy; 15 bucks on mkm. I kind of hope they do the right thing and ban Lurrus before the paper release of the card; putting the inherent problems of Companions aside, Lurrus will definitely need to go in some of the eternal formats. Also, although it is cur...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I guess it's kind of a good thing that Companions turn out to be Hogaaks and not T3feris. There's just no chance in hell this stuff doesn't get banned and then we're done with it, instead of them just being a constant annoyance from now on.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

You keep saying "you can't win with tier 2 decks in Modern", what does that even actually mean? Obviously, tier 1 decks will have a higher winrate than tier 2 decks regardless of format. And obviously, some amount of the time a tier 2 deck will spike a big win because of variance regardles...

Re: Standard Meta Discussion

So UG Gyruda is just straight up unbeatable if they get to 6 mana. Lurrus is busted too (but never beats Gyruda)

I guess the one day of brewing companions was pretty interesting before the format was solved

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

The Commander banlist isn't handled by R&D and it's the biggest joke of all the format banlists. It's kind of an accepted fact that top tier competitive commander is absolutely miserable and the format thrives on house rules and its inherent casual nature. Although I do have to say I madly respe...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

How is RG midrange being a good meta call a sign of format health? that just means big mana is dominating and aggro is bad. If anything its a sign of imbalance. 2) A deck running a different sb card isn't a great sign of anything. And "raising the ceiling" or to put it in other words, ins...

Just want to throw out, before we see Ikoria's effects on Modern, I think the post-Mox Opal ban modern has been excellent. I think the super honest RG midrange deck being a good meta call is a sign of great health, I think Tron resorting to Emrakuls in the sideboard is a sign of great health. Astrol...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern

I wonder if Yorion is worthwhile in UWx control. Reset all my planeswalkers, maybe blink a snapcaster mage, and a 4/5 flyer I just grabbed from under the table? I find its Companion requirement hard to evaluate, especially in these kinds of decks that would have a lot of card selection. Similarly I'...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern

It's some poetic irony that the first card that rings alarm bells for eternal formats in the Timmy-set, has an anti-Timmy Companion requirement. Lurrus seems absurd in Legacy, where it is just essentially free for storm. I can see other decks definitely adapting to run it as well for very little cos...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern

I find it to be incredibly annoying they're revealing commander product together with Ikoria, constantly double-checking the set symbol Compared to previous sets, Ikoria seems very Timmy-targeted which generally means it's too expensive for Modern. I haven't really seen any real stand-outs, which I'...
