Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Raking Claws

Psychotic Fury has been useful in my Ruhan and Rakdos decks and Zurgo decks. I sometimes Sunforger for it in Ruhan, And yes, while combat tricks do carry a risk of losing 2 cards to an opponent's removal, the power they potentially offer some decks makes it worth the risk. About 1/3 of the instants ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Raking Claws

I think these sorts of combat tricks can be a lot better than many peope realize, especially if you don't confine yourself to playing them on your own creatures. Outside of decks like Feather or Zada, most EDH players don't expect these sorts of tricks, and abilities like double strike and trample a...

Re: Maintaining enough cards

Two generally useful strategies for card advantages are to run cards that let you draw cards for doing what the deck already does or to be able to get extra use out of your individual cards. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and Vedalken Archmage are great in artifact decks, as they draw you a card when ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Swarm Intelligence

I have run this in the past, most recently in Kalamax, but have always ended up cutting it because of the cost. By the time you can afford to cast it, there are almost always better things you can be doing with the mana, and there are enough cheaper options that, while not quite as strong, come onli...

Re: What mechanics would you like to see in future Commander precon decks?

Atraxa is just too independently powerful. You almost can't make a truly casual deck with her because of how she dominates combat. Yeah, one of my friends has an Atraxa thallid deck. Even something a limited as thallids goes crazy with Atraxa. I am not sure about decks based on specific mechanics, ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I am still waiting on my booster box, will pick that up this weekend. I played in a prerelease on Saturday and ended up purchasing several extra prerelease packs o play sealed with my wife and friends who weren't able to attend the event. I came out solidly in the middle, got 3 set boosters as prize...

Re: Sheldon's throwaway comment about banning wheels

I hope this thread doesn't get derailed by wish talk... It's true that wishes are always the elephant in the room. They really aren't. Most people, especially those who have been playing for more than a few years and remember what it was like when wishes and sideboards were an optional rule in EDH,...

Re: Sheldon's throwaway comment about banning wheels

I am idly curious, how often are people seeing the Hullbreachers and Narsets of the world played alongside wheels? I haven't yet. That style of play isn't favored among the few people I've played with F2F during COVID, and on PlayEDH, Wheels + Narset/Hullbreacher strategies are played at at a highe...

Re: Have you seen any Walking Dead cards in the wild?

I have not. Other than playing with my wife and one other couple, all of my playing in the recent past has occurred on PlayEDH/Spelltable. Negan is banned on PlayEDH; the other TWD cards are not banned, but I have never encountered them. I personally want nothing to do with the TWD versions, but wou...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Nykthos Exemplar is probably the nastiest whiterhoof ever, outside of Akroma's Will if you're on a lifegain theme. Akroma's will with this guy would be hilariously lethal too, since on the first strike everyone would get +abillion :P I am definitely planning to slot in a place for this guy in Karlo...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Quartzwood Crasher

Quartzwood Crasher is a very solid card that would probably see more play were it not for the fact that there are literally dozens of solid cards in G, R or G/R that are of similar CMC - so many that you probably can't fit them all in any deck - and that most decks these days are running fewer large...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

5 damage to every PW each of your turn for R . I don't know, I feel even 3 damage would've been excessive if it happens repeatedly to every PW. I have a hard time having much sympathy for superfriends decks that aren't running ample enchantment removal. My mono-red Chandrafriends is very sad about ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

On one level, more cool dragons is, well, cool. On another, pretty much version of a dragon deck you might want to actually build as dragon tribal already has more good options available than you can possibly include in one deck. Some of these are good enough they might play a role outside dragon tr...

This newly spoiled merfolk looks more than a little pushed. Not aimed at us as much as other formats, but the Kumena decks and so forth will like it.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Dowsing Dagger

This is an okay card. I have run it in the past but don't think I am currently running it. It is solid in things like dragon/angel/flying tribal decks, as the plants don't stop flyers and having a land that can tap for 3 helps you cast big angels/sphinxes/dragons.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Junk WInder is really solid for token-centric decks that include U, including, notably, the Quandrix commander deck. This fact, plus how well the WR/modular stuff that has been spoiled works with Osgir and other components of Lorehold, tells me that the development of this set and Strixhaven and its...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Refresh my memory, if I have a vanilla creature and it is enchanted by an Aura like Rancor , does Disapprove remove the trample ability? IIRC it maters which card hit the battlefield first. It will temporarily remove all abilities the creatre has at the time Disapprove is cast, including any inhere...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The artifact duals are a nice surprise. I normally stay away from CIPT duals, as there are so many options to choose from, but I do have a couple of decks where them being artifacts matters, and there are plenty of other possibilities there. Good in Osgir, obviously. Plus, more cheap and common dual...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I read the first novel and remember almost nothing about it, or about Garth as a character. Not-very-good generic fantasy with lots of MtG refereces jammed in. I can't recall whether I read the sequel or not. Not exactly a high point in MtG lore.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

So, Chef's Kiss is just wonderfully fun. Not being able to pick what it targets makes it less technically good, but I still like it. This is the kind of chaos I can embrace.
