Re: STX- Strixhaven: School of Mages- Worldbuilding and Story Discussion

So, Will and Rowan save the day, as shown in the cards. Rowan goes a little bit Phoenix, channeling the power of the Snarl. This apparently changes her in some way, as will obbserves something vital seems to have been sucked out of her. We'll see what comes of this. Will she become a power addict al...

Re: Your top 10 (non-commander) cards

Favorites Possibility Storm . I detest most chaos cards. This is a notable exception. It messes with others' strategies, especially control, and often leads to hilarity. Sylvan Library . This was probably my first "pet" card that was actually good. So much power in such a low CMC card. Nyk...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I played two of the Strixhaven precon decks today at PlayEDH. I played the Silverquill one first, ended up winning that game. Second game I ran the Prismari one, even though I was casting huge things from early in the game, the Aesi precon wiped the board with me and two other players without breaki...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vodalian Mage

Vodalian Mage, yet another completely unplayable Fallen Empires card. I remember when that set came out and trying to make its various weak cards into a coherent deck. These are not particularly fond memories. Patron Wizard, on the other hand, is amazing in wizard tribal, even without Intruder Alarm.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

My secondary Moderna dose made me really, really sick for all the next day, on par with the worst cold ever, or a moderate case of flu, with fever, shivering, nausea, all-over body aches, headache and brain fog. But the next day I woke up and was fine, just felt a little run down. I've known several...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I've been playing some Strixhaven sealed (with prerelease packs). Gotta say, I continue to be glad to not have lessons be available outside the deck in Commander, but they make for a very interesting dynamic in sealed, allowing for more in the way of spellslinging than you can typically do with a li...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

My entire Strixhaven preorder came in: case of prerelease packs + a box of draft boosters to do sealed with friends, plus each of the new commander decks. Gonna be doing a lot of MtG this weekend, methinks.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Grenzo, Havoc Raiser

I used to run this in some decks, but found it didn't work out as well as I'd wished in those decks. I think the problem was the decks more than the card, though. Goad ranks very high in my list of favorite dynamics, and I am fairly certain I will keep experimenting until I find the right home for t...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Forsake the Worldly

I like exile removal and am usually willing to pay a little more for it, but I also like my individual cards to have a little more impact, and thus tend to prefer options like Crush Contraband , but I have given this some thought in the past and imagine I probably will run it at some point in one de...

Re: STX- Strixhaven: School of Mages- Worldbuilding and Story Discussion

The story so far just makes me increasingly tired of planeswalkers. Here we have the greatest magic school in the known multiverse, staffed by dozens of cool and presumably powerful characters we've been given cards for, some of them even helming their own Commander decks...and yet, somehow, when ba...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Bontu's Last Reckoning

I encountered this in a Spelltable game this weekend. It was the first time I've seen it cast in play. It did what it needed to do. It's a wrath with an unusually cheap casting cost, but with the drawback, I can't imagine playing it over other options, including (obviously ) Damnation . I can see it...

I traded my one copy of this card for a crapton of store credit when hearing about Commander got me back into Magic after a long absence. It's one of the handfull ofcards I regret getting rid of.

The good Baron should've been what Razaketh is, change my mind. Sacrificing the thralls for his own untold powerrr... Mechanically, I think you're pretty much spot-on there, Razaketh would probably be a better match thematically and for the Baron's power level than the version we got. And again, I ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Sengir, the Dark Baron

Yeah, lore-wise, giving the Baron partner is pretty iffy. The Baron Sengir from the lore has thralls and pawns, not partners. Also, this card doesn't really hint at his power. Baron Sengir is an entity powerful enough that folk like old-walker Urza were extremely wary of him. As a card, this was rea...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

As another example of content many found distressing, there was the stuff in Ikoria, where Lukka's beast companion was killed by someone who wanted to control or get back at Lukka. Shortly after Ikoria was released, I did therapy sessions with a client who is also a Magic player specifically because...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

It's a card game where the goal is to kill your opponent in any number of horrific ways. Whether electrocuting, immolating, mauling with any number of a variety of horrors, slowly bleeding them to death, chipping away at their sanity until they're left a drooling husk or giving them a particularly ...

It's just a card game guys. You don't have to take it so seriously. That is exactly the invalidating and insensitive sort of response that is a bad take on this stuff. Lots of people have experienced traumas of various sorts. When they encounter things that trigger their memories of and learned res...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Did anyone at Wizards write something about that aspect of the poet school? In his most recent article, Maro wrote " Also, the college of words seemed to be a great place for the kids who enjoyed verbally putting down the other kids." So, it is clear the decision to connect bullying/mean-...

Re: Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?

I just want to say yet again that it is okay - and indeed, probably healthy for the game as a whole - that some cards and mechanics don't work in Commander. We get more than enough new toys with every set these days, plus we have multiple sets aimed specifically at us. It's okay if some of the toys ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Arasta of the Endless Web

Arasta has been solid in my Gahiji token-swarm deck, where she is played alongside Dragonlair Spider , Both can get out of hand pretty quickly if opponents don't use targeted removal or a board wipe in a timely manner. Solid card.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The art on Stinging Study probably isn't the only aspect of Silverquill that is going to evoke some unpleasant reactions from some players. By connecting Silverquill to the "mean kids" trope and having the school's cards include things like Humiliate , an active decision was made to connec...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Stinging Study will find its way into Szat/Kodama and a couple of other decks. Inkshield is also pretty amazing, though the need to keep 5 mana untapped to use it will limit it somewhat. The rest of the Silverquill deck, I'm not particularly impressed by, especially given how many other intersting,...
