Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

All I'm saying is that when I want to watch Modern coverage that has many lines to take, I go back and watch Modern around 2014. Birthing Pod vs. Twin, Twin vs. Jeskai Control, Birthing Pod vs. Jund, Jund vs. Twin, Jeskai Control vs. Jund, etc. These matches between players of Reid Duke, Jacob Wilso...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

This is interesting. Using 4 cards to sweep a board and attack with a big beefy creature is non-interactive, but if you say, cast Bolt, Fatal Push, Bolt to clear the board and attack with Tarmogoyf, that's interactive Magic. It's not that I disagree with you. You're totally right. The "flip th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Manamorphose X 3, Faithless Looting, flip Thing in the Ice to Awoken Horror, bounce creatures, attack for 7 is just not going to fit the bill of being interactive for most Modern players.

Whether it's an amazing play or not is more debatable...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

FB_IMG_1565115788096.jpg What do you make of this? Could he be referring to hogaak? I think yes. And I think this could be a slight indicator for an incoming ban. Obviously he is talking about Hogaak. But more importantly, I think the biggest takeaway from this is that they still are terrible at de...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I don't see any issue with niche combo decks doing unpleasant things. It's just a matter of how frequently they are appearing and winning. The play patterns of fast Legacy combo are even worse in a vacuum, but Legacy has better generic answers to prevent those decks from appearing and winning a lot...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

@FoodChainGoblins , from the data gathered neither humans nor uw control is positive against hogaak. Hogaak has a sightly favourable matchup vs them. Will cite relevant data later. On KCI vs Phoenix, we also have data showing it won more than phoenix available. Data aside, it was a better deck over...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Plenty of people did say that Modern would be more interactive after the KCI ban. I thought it would be, if ever so slightly. I didn't think it would change enough for some people's tastes, but I did think it would be more interactive and I was not alone. KCI pushed a lot of interactive decks out be...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Rider and Hogaak would be interesting bans but I'm still on the fence about looting It's hard for me to back up with results yet, but in my opinion, Rider does certainly need to be banned. The deck can win on turn 1 and 2 way too often (I'm not mentioning turn 3 since that's "acceptable" ...

Re: [Deck] Neobrand

So after talking to finalnub all week, I decided to go with NeoBrand or what he likes to call it, Memeform at an 181 person MCQ. Round 1 vs. Hogaak. He rolls the die. I call "even." It is a 3. :( He puts out a Gravecrawler, a Bloodghast, a Stitcher's Supplier, and a Hogaak on turn 2. He sw...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I don't agree they hit the wrong piece though. The aim should always be to have the deck remain at an appropriate power level. I want everyone to get to keep their deck, as having 'your' deck taken from you, is easily the worst experience I've had in the 30 years I've been a gamer. I understand wha...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

What I hate most about Planeswalkers is that it goes against the absolute core of what I want to be doing in Magic. I do not want to play on my own turn. What makes this game unique compared to others is the Stack and playing cards at Instant speed on your opponent's turn. Planeswalkers are essenti...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I'm pretty sure WotC wants Planeswalkers to see more play in Modern. As of now, usually only Jund/Tron/UW Control run them for the most part. (I know there's Mono Red Phoenix with Green and W&6 and a few more) I personally don't like Planeswalkers much, but if I do decide to do them, I like to o...

surprised here, he did not use any anger of the gods and still won against elves. I guess winning the die roll is key. "do you have a 5th copy of ____ card?" is a common joke thrown around in our playgroup when someone is winning too much, :p Yeah, Anger of the Gods was something I could ...

25 person FNM. Sad times for me (again) Round 1 vs. Grixis Shadow. In the first game, I fade removal for 2 turns after my mana dude eats a turn 1 Fatal Push. Then I have 1 off lethal with attacks, but I also have Westvale Abbey , turning into a big dude for more than lethal and he's tapped out (not ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

We have "diversity" because new cards made new decks. It literally has nothing to do with Twin. This is something I brought up about 5 -7 posts back. The format is obviously going to be more "diverse" with a larger card pool, outside of mistakes like Eldrazi Winter and Hogaak Vi...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

It's easy to look at the mistakes Wizards has made regarding Modern. But I think we should also at least take into consideration the positive choices they've made. They held off on banning anything from Grixis Shadow, Humans, and even the more recent UR Thing. I am way more lenient regarding ban dec...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

"Lose a lot" is going to need to be given some context. Rewind to the time when the ban happened, how many reliable 'Turn 2' kills existed again? Hive Mind lost its effectiveness in the deck. Back when the "given" number was 2, I personally ran 3. It is my out to "I'm dead ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

People just gave up on it, when they could have been winning week after week after week, because they lost Summer Bloom. The only 'metas' that matter are GP level, and MTGO. If you are playing primarily in MTGO space, outside of very rare cases where decks do not operate as they do in paper, then y...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

In fairness, they have also made a lot of good ban and unban decisions as well. Even if Bloodbraid Elf did take a while to come off, at least it eventually DID come off and doesn't have the "Stoneforge Mystic" treatment of just never freaking coming off. I can't disagree that they are terr...

What do you think about Sorcerous Spyglass as one of in the mainboard. For informations and phiting needle copy Granted, I haven't played the deck too much, but I felt it was bad (well, my 1 of Pithing Needle). In theory, just having it as a Whir target is good. But then you draw it when you need t...

@ktkenshinx , I just stated what wizards said. I quoted them saying twin reduced Diversity. They have access to full modo data;we don't. This means they just know better than us. I would be hesitant in saying that a company that kept Sword of the Meek and Jace, the Mind Sculptor on the ban list for...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Imho too many people (especially here) are too conditioned by their own beliefs. I was a Twin player. I don't think Twin ban was deserved (and I already stated several times why). I believe it won't be a top Tier in Modern right now (again, already explained the reasons). That said, it DID limit di...

follow up question, should faithless looting be restricting wizard's design space I'm actually wondering the same thing about Karn, the Great Creator ? Right now the meta is quick. Even after a Hogaak ban, the meta will be fairly quick. But I often wonder if Wizards is going to be careful about wha...

When Bloodbraid Elf was banned instead of Deathrite Shaman, how long did it take before Bloodbraid Elf was unbanned? Is that long I have to wait to see Bridge from Below back in Modern? Or good riddance because it was really good with a banned (what we presume will happen) card? (Hogaak) Bridge was...

Re: [Deck] Bridgevine / Dredgevine

Nice job! You went 3-0 vs. Humans and beat Neoform? That's pretty sick. I've seen some say Humans in favored, but at least when Bridge was legal and I tested Humans vs. Bridge Vine, Humans seemed favored at about 55/45 in my opinion. (I tested mostly against Humans since it's what I had to test agai...
