Re: Update from Rules Committee re: The Walking Dead Cards

I would wager that most of those games let you know upfront, they don't blindside a player. I've never played them, but if I sat down to play Axis & Allies I would expect to have to deal with Nazis being involved, and if I played GTA I would expect violence and crime being committed. Magic is b...

Re: Update from Rules Committee re: The Walking Dead Cards

Many games can feature such villains and I don't hear anyone asking to ban them there either. Many games ask you to play as the villain, sometimes even real, historic ones. I would wager that most of those games let you know upfront, they don't blindside a player. I've never played them, but if I s...

Re: Update from Rules Committee re: The Walking Dead Cards

I haven't seen the show but how can a normal human be worse than a mythic being who murdered millions, if not billions, of innocents? Even the War of the Spark trailer showed a family slaughtered by the zombies, igniting Liliana's rebellion. Maybe Negan's depiction is more gruesome than Bolas' one ...

Re: Update from Rules Committee re: The Walking Dead Cards

I'm speaking specifically about the moral equivalence he drew between Nicol Bolas and Negan. For a lot of folks, Negan is a lot worse than Nicol Bolas (or even Yawgmoth) because of the things he's done, to his "wives" specifically. That reads as tone deaf to a lot of people, myself includ...

Re: Cards that punch well above their asking price

Mirrorweave and Radiate . If you have the room for it, you can never go wrong with those cards. Also, for all you mono-green ramp players out there, you should take a look at Recross the Paths . It's a fantastic piece of ramp. You don't get to choose which land you get (hence why I recommend it mos...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Spirit of the Hearth

Hmm, it can maybe help against graveyard removal if your meta is full of Bojuka Bog and Nihil Spellbomb? Although, the ones recently printed do not target any player in particular. It can protect against Aetherflux Reservoir and Mindslaver at least...

For mono-colored its kinda hard for me to find a really fun idea but I did think of a demon deck thats mostly Shadow Born Appolistal and legendary demons I could use to switch around as commanders.
Maybe Taborax, Hope's Demise as the commander ?

Re: What are your aesthetic hang-ups?

cringe-worthy Anime alters Yes, yes, 100 times yes. Especially when they're overly sexualised. Like, it's a swamp man, what does a huge breasted scantily clad anime woman have to do with literally a piece of landscape? It's gross, and in a competitive environment I know for a fact people get DQ'd f...

Re: Versatile Tribals?

Got an idea for Nicol Bolas, the Ravager // Nicol Bolas, the Arisen zombie tribal, using all five Gods. Gonna test... How about a Bolas tribal deck. Just chalk it full of Bolas :p There's something I want to try with that deck that fits the megalomaniac personality of Nicol Bolas. Step 1) Have one ...

For those of you with art preferences like me, is there anything specific you try to avoid? Be it weird anatomy, gross art, etc.
If the art creeps me out, I'll skip the card. Not looking at you, Treacherous Urge.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Season of the Witch

I think the argument over correct color combo isn't necessary, Red has so many attack forcing cards AND many of the best punishers ( Disrupt Decorum + Repercussion anyone?) It's sort of like, what's your secondary theme going to be? Do you pillowfort so people have to attack each other? White and b...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Season of the Witch

Season of the Witch isn't quite Grand Melee or Fumiko the Lowblood , but forcing attacks (extorting them, I suppose - 'attack or die') isn't a thing that black really gets. Pair it with a No Mercy effect and it seems pretty potent, assuming you have sufficient life to weather any attacks that come ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Season of the Witch

I've always wanted to try a Merieke Ri Berit pillowfort deck that forces other players to attack with stuff like Siren's Call or Norritt , but I was never satisfied with the list I ended up with at the end of each theorycrafting session. When the goad mechanic was introduced, I was even less tempted...

Re: What are your aesthetic hang-ups?

Overall I don't really care my decks are a Frankenstein of foil comic-art mutations, an Egyptian Lord of Extinction with non-foil planeswalkers. In fact it adds to the charm, because I see it (the decks/format) as myself coordinating a ragtag bunch of misfits I found worthy from across the multiver...

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

Sure you can play those cards, but you don't have to. If you want to play Kalamax without being obnoxious, I think you must build it "fair". It's the same rules for all of those problematic commanders. You can actively build them to be fair, just like you can build a non-combo Ghave deck....

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

Then why play Kalamax at all if you aren't going to include the things green brings to the table that can add to spellslinger? Sure, green has some good instants, but the untap effects are one of the parts of Green's arsenal that most benefits spellslinger. If you aren't going to play those, why bu...

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

My Kalamax deck isn't even close to optimized and actively avoids the easy and obvious infinite combos, but it does include Wilderness Reclamation and Seedborn Muse , so it does a pretty good job of having its own turn and being very active on others' turns as well. As noted above, a lot of people ...

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

For Kalamax, I guess it depends on how heavy you are on ramp and untap shenanigans? I've never played with or against him, but if its controller has as much mana as everybody else, I don't think it will be too obnoxious to play against. It will just basically "spread out" its own turn amo...

Re: What are your aesthetic hang-ups?

I only care about the language (not a huge fan of non-english cards) and border (not a huge fan of white border, although that white-bordered Tibalt looks good). The pricier the card is and the less it matters though :P My only exception is my random Golos deck which I try to pimp with as many diffe...

Re: Modal DFCs in Commander

I guess my biggest concern about the Modal DFCs in Zendikar Rising for the Commander format is that it might promote cheating more since there's no coherent cost to flip the cards like there was with Transform in Innistrad, Ixalan, and Magic Origins especially in competitive environments where you ...

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

I think those commanders are ok as long as you don't focus on building around them and their strength. My Golos deck is a "random tribal" deck with coin flips, cascade, clash and co. And it is by no means dangerous unless you really leave it alone for like 3 to 4 turns. I think the "r...
