Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I know it's just a rant, but most-played cards are also ridiculous. Mystic Sanctuary is played in more decks than Basic Plains. In fact, of the top 10 lands, 0 are white, neither fetchlands nor shocklands nor basics. Disregarding Lurrus, the top played creatures are Uro at #1 and Coatl at #2. Veil i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I'm sick of the bone of playing against Uro. It doesn't even really matter wether I win or lose. It's just such a drag. It's similarly dumb across archetypes too. Bant Snow Control/Stoneblade, Temur Urza, Temur Scapeshift. It's all a wash. Slam Uro t3 is the play every game because nobody cares if i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Sublime Epiphany would have been interesting if it had a slightly less powerful effect but was costed like Cryptic Command . An alternative top end spell to Cryptic whould have been really nice. At 6cmc, this ain't it though. 6 mana makes it hard to play, but probably not impossible. I could see de...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

41% of decks on 2,5 copies of Veil of Summer . Forget all the qualitative arguments. That's just a fact.

I don't understand how anybody is arguing about this.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I'm tired of this "It's legal, so he has every right to play it" argument. Nobody is disputing that. It's completely beside the point and a shallow non-argument. Veil of Summer is the biggest of several reasons why green is too good in modern. And incidentally, because Ancient Stirrings an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I think the key difference is that Looting was a proactive card that pulled its weight no matter what. In the decks it was in, it was basically Ancestral Recall . Veil is the best card in the format against blue and black. And it is by an insanely huge margin. But it does squat against the other 3 c...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Well, now with the new goblin one can play goblin twin so maybe we will stop talking about it? it looks like a decent combo. I just hope the price of the new gob does not go up too high. I just read up on this a bit. T3 kill works like this: t2 Conspicuous Snoop , t3 Boggart Harbinger put Kiki-Jiki...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I just got double Veil of Summer ed in g1 by an Ad Nauseam Player. I insulted him, saying he must be really dumb if he can't find a way to win a game of magic other than 4x maindeck Veil. He said I'm a toxic player and left the game. And you know what? I don't regret a single thing. I stand by my wo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Btw I am so not looking foward to a meta dominated by Bant Uro and Temur Urza again.

Just straight 60 Card Snow Control and Temur Urza are about to ruin my day.

If I did not already address it in my initial post, I agree. I think that the only card that needs monitoring (and long term banning) is Astrolabe and nothing else.
Veil of Summer is still the dumbest card ever and should be banned.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

the one thing that makes Uro an acceptable card is that it's easy enough to interact with. Counterspells, bounce-effects and gy hate are all fairly effective because its quite resource-intensive to cast.

Thank God Aether Gust is a card.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Also on a general note, as far as i can tell, the change to the Companion mechanic is a success. Companions still are in a lot of decks, but the important factor is that they are actually cast a fraction of the amount they were before. the Burn and Prowess decks I have faced e.g. still have Lurrus, ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

cfusionpm Here's the list. Grixis Delver . I'm kind of interested in exploring some of these strategies again once paper opens back up. I'm not really sure that deck route is how I want to go, but I do think Sprite Dragon is a good call. I'm personally thinking some sort of Aether Vial fueled Faeri...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

cfusionpm Here's the list. Grixis Delver . The way I see it, the challenge (and also the idea, for god's sakes) with companions was to make their deck building limitations roughly balance out having an 8th card every game. But the cards were so absurdely powerful and efficient that this question wa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

So I jammed 10 Grixis Delver matches today and the deck still seems gas. Went 9-1. Lurrus is still completely free as a companion, but I dropped Bauble in the main for a 4th Serum Visions, 2nd Kolaghan's command and 3rd and 4th Snapcaster Mage. This made me realize that 1) Sprite Dragon has improved...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I feel like threads like this should be suspended for about 2-3 weeks after every banning/update in modern, because although modern does probably still have serious problems, the level of fact-free, data-free, negative opinion-sentiment-emotional-blubbering is simply staggering. It's basically someb...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Of course there are decks where you "might as well". Lurrus restricts 0 cards out of Burn, 0 cards out of Grixis Delver for example. But decks like Jund and Tron have changed quite a few cards to accomodate Companions. And 80card decks are just less consistent than 60card decks. I think th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Lurrus and Yorion aren't going anywhere. This change doesn't fundamentally shift anything either of them do. And since most instances of casting them are not on curve anyway, but used to gas back up once the hand is low, they're still going to be good. I fully expect both of these (or at least Lurr...

Green decks across the spectrum are run...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

no offence, but imo its an incredibly dumb argument to say "Veil is too good because white and red are too bad". Red interaction is damage-based and most of it can go to the face as opposed to black removal so it HAS to be worse in terms of killing threats. And white has Path. Path may not...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Truth be told. It will never reach above 40%, which was Oko's numbers, and with no Oko, Green will lose a bit of it's momentum. That why it was a genuinely good chance to ban it, and this is coming from a player that hasn't been playing Blue for ages. Make no mistakes, it will be difficult to ban V...
