Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm also obsessed with CS/Charm/Cryptic decks because I've been slowly dusting off some old friends, waiting for some new ones in the mail, patiently waiting my ability to play in paper FNMs again... Numbers aren't final, but here's what's ready so far.... https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1280x102...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I won't like it, because I want to be casting Counterspell , Archmage's Charm , and Cryptic Command . Bonus points for also including Snapcaster Mage and Lightning Bolt .  Winning is irrelevant if I don't enjoy playing the deck. I hear you but do you ever stop and correlate...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I see there's no convincing you to at least TRY it before making decisions so I will just have to agree to disagree on the value of what you give up vs what you are gaining. I value the things I am gaining far more than the fractional sacrifices I lose. You value the things you would lose more. Fai...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

12 mana to make four 5/5s over 5 turns (when they start as 1/1s, 2/2s, etc) is pitiful with the current power level of cards in Modern. If you're not recurring it, abusing it, or have bunches of incidental artifacts, this has no place in your deck. But I feel like I'm repeating myself, so I'll leave...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Hidden Style: -4x misc lands +3x Saga +1x expidition map What benefit is it for any deck to do this? Map is trash in any deck not fetching specific lands, and what good is a construct when it takes 2 mana and 2 turns to make a 1/1? Seems extremely.... mediocre. On top of that, you are trading lands...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The thing about Urza's Saga is that it's only really being seen in decks that play enough artifacts to fetch, play enough artifacts to make meaningful Constructs, or have silver bullets tutor targets. As a blue control player, I have exactly zero interest in this card. And it's because I don't want ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

So if something breaks Urza's Saga , it might be Power Conduit 's ability to repeatedly (and for free) remove counters. I didn't realize Sagas "officially" used counters that can be interacted with in the rules, because honestly, I haven't played much of any format where anyone played Saga...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'll hard pass on Urza's Saga . Even if it is just "good" and not "broken," you need a fair amount of additional artifacts in the deck to really make it worthwhile, especially since it's not an artifact itself. If I'm not playing other artifacts, there's no way I put this in anyt...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I thought you'd have liked the newest iterations of UR Breach pre-MH2 (with Prismari Command) that was already putting up results, given how close to Twin it seemed to be. In the past, when I played Breach a lot, there were more times than I am comfortable with when a Breached Emrakul wasn't enough...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

After some cursory testing with a Murktide Regent UR list , this beefy drago-boi seems to be EXACTLY what UR needed (along with a handful of other new toys). Card has been absolutely excellent, including playing INSANELY well in multiples and with Snapcaster Mage. Will be immediately picking up 4 pa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Pre-order of Solitude is sold out in most online stores. Looks like the hype is strong on this one. The density of white cards needed to make this free means it will likely be in HEAVY Wx creature decks. UWx decks don't actually run that many white cards, and the ones they do are generally things t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I would love to see Artifact Lands legal in a format that has Karn, The Great Creator. Go ahead. Run em.

Many bans from years ago are so laughably irrelevant today.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It dominated too much and it was insanely hard for any other deck to actually interact with meaningfully. It was borderline at best, and was easily interacted with using multiple, broad, main deck interaction like creature removal, discard, and counterspells. The myths and legends of the mighty Twi...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I can't even imagine Twin being good in today's meta. Why play a bad control deck when you can play Heliod, with tutors and amazing backup beat down plans? I mean, I would play the living hell out of it, but not because I think it's the best thing to be doing. Especially when real control decks are ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I don't think the absence of a good BW deck is much of a defense. I could see this fitting in a BW midrange deck using SFM and/or Dark Confidant to offset the card disadvantage and still have game even without mulling into the combo. Sure? I mean, those decks have never been good, so hooray for int...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

4x Grief 4x Ephemerate This is the actual shell. You can build around this and go a whole bunch of different ways, but this the new "hogaak of mh2". Expect bans or rules change. But I mean, you have to be playing a lot of black cards to facilitate casting it for free, and white mana to ca...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

There is no card disadvantage when playing Griephemerate. You trade 2 cards to get a 3/2 menace on the board while discarding your opponent's 3 best spells. My friend and I stopped playtesting it because of the non-games it creates. He doesn't want to play against it any more and I fully understand...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I feel like Griephemerate is just going to be this season's NeoBrand. Super annoying, possibly unbeatable, but who knows if it will be an actual meaningful force. And if it is, it'll just eat a ban. I don't think it'll be as scary as people thing, but who knows. We're inherently awful at evaluating ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have no idea where the format is going to settle, but I'm likely going to jam some kind of proactive Stoneforge pile until things flesh out. OR go hard into TTB/Emmy with the addition of Suspend , Strike it Rich , and Prismari Command that tackle the mana costs and removal struggles, along the sui...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Excited for the Betterskull card. Seems like a great target to run alongside a Batterskull and Sword of Feast and Famine main, with the Fire and Ice in the side. I know what I'll be playing when I can finally shuffle up paper cards again. The trample and indestructible is really helpful in a lot of ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Counterspell is real!!! So glad I never have to cast Mana Leak or Logic Knot again, while making functionally no change to any play patterns in 99% of cases. Also glad I picked up a set of the Mystical Archive ones for like $5 each. I really don't like the art on ANY counterspell, but I like...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Counterspell would be a lovely low bar addition that would make little difference in real-world, but WOTC will make a HUGE deal about it! As pointed out, it would effectively replace Mana Leak and Logic Knot , while cards like Remand still have tempo value from drawing a card. Logistically, Leak an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

As I said before though, I'm definitely open to being proven wrong, and I can't really defend my arguments beyond my initial speculation. Haha, thats fair! I'm just thinking how many times I keep a close 2-3 lander and NEVER draw a 3rd/4th, or when I already have like 7 lands in play and dra...
