Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
I'm really not trying to white knight but the title of the thread is kinda inflammatory. I don't know Gavin, but I'd have to imagine being the face as a designer doesn't mean you get 100% control of the final product. There are a lot of hands in the pot, and important decisions have to be delegated...

Re: commander suggestion game
My guess is Mana Echoes.
I think Ulasht is powerful, and definitely underrated among the people I know. Would you shoot me a PM with your list (or a link to the same) if it's available?

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Grismold - if you put in the work, you get...a big beater. Whoop-de-do. Pass. There's a deck in my group which is all about forcibly giving people tokens and subsequently killing them off for various harm to the player. This will be pretty good in there. A tribute to the aforementioned situational ...

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
I appreciate wizards wanting to manage their reprint equity but they've seriously got to stop with the nickling and diming in the precons. Our (presumably) very own Surging Chaos made a brilliant comment about Reprint Equity on reddit . Reprint Equity needs to get used. I absolut...

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
I can agree with that. The aura morph is probably the only really different design (and is it really different from something like Zoetic Cavern?).

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
I really like Scroll of Fate, Ignite the Future, Gift of Doom and a few others. Leadership Vacuum and Sudden Substitution look interesting as well.
YMMV, of course.

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
They also had by far the least popular commanders of any commander year. I would contend that it was because they were monocoloured. Honestly, I think it was a good bit of exploratory design work; these were the first Planeswalkers-as-commanders, and I can see they didn't want to make anything too ...

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
While I'm thrilled at the printing of iconic characters from MTG's history, the surrounding cards seem to be 6/10. I remember when Wurmcoil Engine was printed in C14 and thinking "Wow, this is some REAL value". 2014 also had: Cyclonic Rift , Grave Titan , Adarkar Valkyrie (very scarce at ...

It's around turn 8 that I feel like anyone who is going to meaningfully participate in the game already has.

Re: Do you think C19 is above and beyond?
Caveat: I don't generally complain about reprints from a personal perspective. I always buy all decks, and it's usually for the new non-general cards. I also have very realistic expectations about non-basic lands, fetches, Snapcaster, etc.; I would definitely rather avoid the problems of previous co...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Soul of New Phyrexia
The entire cycle is pretty interesting, but I think the only other one I've seen played is Soul of Innistrad It's true that these are the only two I currently play. I think Soul of Theros could easily have a home in a creature-based life-gain deck. I've tried to play Soul of Ravnica in 5-colour dec...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Soul of New Phyrexia
Thursday, August 8th, 2019; Soul of New Phyrexia I have played this a lot, and it's grand. I liked that whole Soul-cycle from M15. While I will concede that my meta is super slow, it does work when you can generate large but not-infinite amounts of mana (like in Selvala, Heart of the Wilds , but wi...

Re: commander suggestion game
I want to play a pre-Alara Commander in 2 colors that has been made significantly better by cards printed in the last 2 years I'm going to go with Ulasht, the Hate Seed . There are few more red/green creatures that help support an Ulasht strategy, and many more go-wide support cards (chief among th...

Re: Pre-Game Politics and Decisions (Should they happen?)
I definitely agree with DirkGently's and materpillar's points about grudges. Grudges are not good decision-making information. It's easy to mistake a grudge for information about how threatening a player's deck is, if they play the same commander multiple times ...

Re: Pramikon, Wall of Empire (Let's Brew!)
You can use Spark Double or Sakashima the Impostor in addition to Mystic Barrier , to stop all attacks as well, AND Spark Double/Sakashima are really flexible. Really, I think this direction probably best for a superfriends build (again Spark Double) in any case, but, I strongly suspect that this ki...

Re: Pre-Game Politics and Decisions (Should they happen?)
Now, the question I want to ask is, is this acceptable? Yes. If you sit down at a table with Aryel, Knight of Windgrace , Odric, Lunarch Marshal and Urza, High Lord Artificier , I think it's totally reasonable to consider Urza the threat and attack them first. I think it increases the fun to not ju...

Re: Let’s brew Elsha!
Self-mill might be great or outclassed depending how the deck actually operates It's more that we won't really know if we can go off unless we stack with something like Scroll Rack. Millkin/Deranged basically let you either float mana and mill, or announce a cast (move it to the stack), see the top...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
To be blunt, I think Doomed Artisan is kindof a waste of cardboard and somebody's brain time. Interesting design is never a waste of time. I would take 100 artisans over one titan. At the very least, it's a well-costed Breeding Pit for an endless parade of fuel for Attrition and similar furnaces.
