Re: The Necrobloom: Datura stramonium

I need redundancy for Demonic Tutor in Seasons Past loops as a tutor that puts the card directly into hand instead of on top of my library incase I don't have a cycling land or something. Maybe? It's pretty niche either way. Perhaps Diabolic Intent as a middle ground? I'd consider Hoarding Broodlor...

Re: The Necrobloom: Datura stramonium

Much like DH's deck Earthcraft is probably superior to Spelunking most of the time; it's a ton more value outside of the combo, even at the "downside" of having to fish out a forest. which you likely want to do most of the time anyway. It's true that Spelunking doesn't technically require ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vault 101: Birthday Party

Autoattaching equipment effects are strong but always wind up more awkward than people think. Like it takes a board state to line up. Deferring it a turn with the saga is kind of helpful in that respect but the timing still requires you to have a dude out first or be happy attaching to the token. Ov...

Re: Imodane - Why is the burn deck gaining life?

In my Slicer deck, I have had really, really good luck loading up on all the derpy counterspell effects. The control package in slicer is: tibalt's trickery red elemental blast pyroblast dualcaster mage wild ricochet wyll's reversal invoke calamity fork reiterate I'd consider many of those since the...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

So, let's say you, as the non-Rhystic player pass without doing anything. Then Rhystic passes without doing anything. If you gain no new plays that don't feed the Rhystic, do you do that again? What if you pass, and Rhystic does play something. If you don't have a new play that doesn't feed Rhystic...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

I think you misread what I said, since your argument is agreeing with my statement. Not paying (allowing the draw) is riskier at higher powered tables. I laugh/groan at players who try to win through an opposing Rhystic by playing a bunch of spells, especially if they aren't a deck running a ton of...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

If you have the choice between playing something an having an opponent draw a card, or playing nothing, the latter is often not the more beneficial decision for you. Do you turn Rhystic Study into an opposing Time Walk ? The higher the power you're playing at, the riskier not paying becomes. If you...

Re: Ephara, God of the Polis - Flash & Taxes

I learned something new recently; Scholar of New Horizons has a few really funny interactions. 1. if I pop Invasion of Segovia // Caetus, Sea Tyrant of Segovia in which is on my list to try, I can remove the counters :D Because it can be done at instant speed too, you can potentially bop the battle ...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

Playing your cards does, generally, move you towards winning, while not playing your cards tends to have the opposite effect. This is where the complexity of understanding whether you are actually increasing your odds of winning by defecting comes into play. A lot of the time you will be hurting yo...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

Just to clarify this is not a "ban study" Thread, this is a "discuss how to appropriately respond to study" thread :D Ban thread is in the rules forum. Play pattern ways I'll stand by my advice: Most of the time it's correct to pay while focus firing the Study player, because, an...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

why are you comparing ripples to nights whisper? To me these are completely different cards filling different roles. If you are trying to strictly draw to hand than this card is not for you. If you want to see 3 extra cards a turn and fill your GY with the option to add to your hand - then you migh...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

Is Smothering Tithe a good card when it is a 4 mana do-nothing until your opponents next draw phase? It doesn't break even until your opponents collectively draw 4 cards. But I think we can agree that in practice it is more than worth the investment. The tax is twice as much, the payoff is mana ins...

Re: [MH3] The Necrobloom - Field of the Loam

How does this combo run? Requires a moving pieces to get going, but a mix of-- * some number of cycling lands maybe (to help with topdeck tutors) * Takenuma, Abandoned Mire can play a role in here too (since you can dredge it back with a cycling land or a draw trigger and use it to recur analyst) *...

SCD: Rhystic Study

The forthcoming is a bit of a rant. Feel free to try to convince me but I really don't care, I'm just venting. :D A small legend SP - Study player Rhystic Study This card is not good in most scenarios. The only reason it's "good" is because your opponents are making poor play decisions, an...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Ripples of Undeath too - highly playable and synergistic. How is it too much mana? 2 to cast, and 1 to draw? Mill 3 every turn for free. Think hard about what percentage of the time this is worse than Night's Whisper -- it's like..almost always. We just have way better options to be playing. Hell, ...

Re: [MH3] The Necrobloom - Field of the Loam

I don't know that I like 5 mana payoffs ( Skirge Familiar Bone Miser ) - really just not necessary. You can win the game handily by just beating face with swampwalking zombies without having to spend 5 mana, just Entomb Filth , or draining the table out, or more mana efficient resilient combos made ...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

The land is a little rough, but doesn't look too bad in this first draft just editing off my existing deck somewhat: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/BpoC7xBO2EKyghmhu6-8fw Can certainly include several combos. Ashnod's is only $5. That looks massively rough and I don't like your chances of hitting V...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Journeyer's Kite

Thaumatic Compass // Spires of Orazca makes it look pretty bad, and then like actual cards make Thaumatic Compass // Spires of Orazca look pretty bad. :D

The game is so, so, so, so far past where you can spend 5 mana to draw a card.

I have found The Meathook Massacre to be an exceptional finisher-answer for a Field deck. You can just hook for x=2 and kill everyone after attacking usually.

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Any of you folks have a budget version of Varina? There's a weekly league that I am considering with a $150 budget cap. I was thinking Yuriko, but then thought Varina could probably get under that cap without giving up too much of the game plan. The biggest pain is losing a lot of untapped fixing, ...

Re: Ephara, God of the Polis - Flash & Taxes

To be honest, lands like this, and Field of the Dead, are precisely why I still have Strip Mine , Tectonic Edge , and Demolition Field in my decks. When you do strong things, can't be salty about opponents wanting to stop them. ;) I don't find myself striping lands much at all, so little so that I ...
