Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I've watched occasional legacy leagues on youtube, but that's about the extent of my MtG content consumption on the platform. I have zero interest in watching someone spend 20 minutes showing me roughly the same thing I could get from a decklist in 30 seconds. On the broader primer discussion, the t...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Soulfire Grand Master

I would shoehorn this into a lot more decks if it were any two of the three colors, even if it's not the best option. I don't run that color combo often enough to make it a consideration despite liking the card a lot.

Re: What are you picking up from Kaldheim?

I don't have anything that's a sure include in either of my permanent lists at this point, just a few things that I'm interested in testing out someday in the far future when I actually get out to play again. Jaya Ballard, Task Mage Birgi, God of Storytelling (mostly for the backside) Tibalt's Trick...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

As a regular player of a durdly deck with a suicidal commander, Tyrite Sanctum is right up my alley. More generally, it's probably better to evaluate it as if the last ability wasn't on there. Three mana to add a +1/+1 counter every turn may not be the most exciting ability in the world, but I'm a b...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Binding the Old Gods is kind of unexciting as a card, but it's super cool that the art is actually a photo of a carved wooden sculpture.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Congrats! Thanks! I'm feeling it myself. Work has been bonkers. Small team with a couple of workmates away is tough, and Medical Oncology goes pretty nuts this time of year. It doesn't really make a lot of sense, but there's this perceived rush to get chemo underway before christmas hits. W...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I was going to take the next couple weeks off, but it looks like that's not going to work out well. I'll probably take the inter-holiday time and a few days off into January to make up for it. Nothing too exciting for Christmas - hanging out with my wife and video calls with our families. In less fe...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Without trying to sound too much like an mtgfinance greaseball, if you're not going to use it, trade it ASAP while it holds its value. The hype is still relatively high for it, but prices have already started to drop, and this isn't a limited print run product so it'll probably settle relatively lo...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Got my CMR collector box today and pulled an extended foil Jeweled Lotus so I think the box definitely worked out for me.

Somewhat awkwardly, it's not a card I'm likely to play (even aside from the fact that I haven't played at all since March). Not a lot of fast mana in my group.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Mine comes from a high school Spanish exercise. It was something about rowing down a river, seeing various rainforest animals, and shouting for help. Most of them were things like jaguars where it might actually be justified, but the idea of shouting for help because you saw a tortoise was funny to ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I never actually finished BotW. I picked up a switch for Fire Emblem and Pokemon and didn't make it through BotW before those dropped. I should actually get back to it someday. I've been playing the hell out of Hades. It's the best game I've played in a long time and I'm not sure I could point to a ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Do you have some more non-fantasy book recommendations? I could use some wider experience. I've read and really enjoyed Glass Castle and The Last Lecture. I'd highly recommend both of those books. I'm currently also working through C.S. Lewis Signature Classics which I've found myself learning a lo...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

My reading list might be a little outside of what everyone else is talking about but it's still a fun discussion. I haven't read a lot of fantasy recently, to the point where I couldn't actually tell you the last fantasy work I read (probably rereading something by Terry Pratchett). Finally finished...

Re: Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

I don't actually have the reasoning for not including Sol Ring in the primer, so maybe that's the middle ground. Add some verbiage about fast mana in the card options section with a note under the decklist, similar to how I'm treating Painter's Servant or Distorting Lens . I never got around to a se...

Re: Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

I'm glad you're enjoying the list! I appreciate that you're making suggestions to improve the primer and not taking it as a personal attack or anything. We're probably going to disagree on this point and that's fine. For what it's worth, my group doesn't ban Sol Ring. You're not going to find it in ...

Re: Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

All primers are meta specific to varying degrees. Browse through the multicolored ones and see how many don't include the relevant ABUR duals, which is an even easier inclusion if you're trying to present the optimal list in a primer. I'm not trying to write the definitive resource on Jaya Ballard, ...

Re: Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

I could, but my views on that would be speculative seeing as I haven't played with or against fast mana (or dedicated combo, or stax, etc). My opinions on what's effective in that setting are outdated at best and including them makes for a worse primer, not a better one. Sol Ring and friends aren't ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I'm glad to see Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter getting a foil printing after a decade. One of my favorite commanders in those colors. Endless Atlas is another notable first foil printing for all of the magpies out there who are into mono-colored decks.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Anyone who's interested, the MtG comic con panel starts in 20 minutes and is online (like all of the comic con programming this year). Looks like the focus is MaRo talking new Zendikar. edit: Typing this all up real time, so I may miss some stuff or edit more in. He's going through pretty quick and ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I used to play that on a semi-regular basis with 60 card casual decks. It feels like it would work worse the more optimized the decks get, particularly if the emperors are playing combo decks. If you intentionally dial it down a little, I could see it still being fun.

Apparently I'm not using any of my parts to their full potential. Part of that right now is that I need to clear up some space on my SSDs. Re: Do you curve your rocks or play all the 2 CMC ones?

My ramp is usually heavily weighted towards 1 and 2 CMC, but does take curve into account. I do curve ramp spells in decks that are interested in big mana, but higher CMC ramp spells are usually more threat than setup. I don't run fast mana, aside from the occasional Mox Opal in artifact decks. Anci...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I made a couple substantial upgrades (read: everything but the GPU, power supply, and case) earlier this year so I could send my brother-in-law a bunch of the old parts. Motivation there was that I was about due for an upgrade with most of the parts being 5-7 years old and he's a recent college grad...
