Re: Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

IKO and C20 releasing at the same time makes for a slightly less compact set review than normal. The themes in both of these are not particularly in line with what I'm interested in doing here but there are always some possibilities. I'm treating them as two separate sets for the purposes of this po...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Cruel Ultimatum , Violent Ultimatum , and Titanic Ultimatum all saw some occasional EDH play. I don't think I've seen anything but Cruel in quite a while and that's more nostalgia than anything else. Brilliant Ultimatum was a little too unreliable even for EDH back in the day and Clarion Ultimatum ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Sanctifier of Souls

I'm sure I saw this card during its spoiler season but I certainly didn't remember it. Too big of a resource ask for too little upside for this format.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Guardian Project

Well, if you ignore that you have creatures in addition to the extra cards now. Think of it like enchantresses. Plus, blinking. This is what the initial post on this card was missing. It gives you back the card you spent on the first creature, then every subsequent creature is card advantage. Putti...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

If it stays to evergreen keywords, I don't think it's too bad. I'll probably start adding a few glass beads to my dice bag for it - black for deathtouch, white for lifelink, etc. If you're playing the mechanic, you're likely going to be prepared for it. I had a similar issue when I first started pl...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I've been listening to Welcome Interstate Managers all day today. I have a lot of good memories associated with Fountains of Wayne and Adam Schlesinger's death is a blow. My favorite is probably their second most well known song thanks to being used on Scrubs, but I'll still share it here. https://w...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I'll hold final judgment until I actually see how the cards play, but I really don't like the look of the new mechanics here. Ability tokens feel like a lot of potential bookkeeping headaches and mutate feels unwieldy with the number of cards stacked (particularly when some of the ones we're likely ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

We went grocery shopping this morning and picked up a little extra, but that has more to do with the fact that we typically only buy for 3-5 days at a time due to kitchen size than panic. Shelves were completely bare for a few things (eggs, pasta, potatoes, TP) and light on a bunch more. I did try a...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Pretty much what happened for us. We have a decent number of people working in labs who are still going to be there, but anything that isn't considered business critical is getting delayed and anyone who can work from home is doing that. Both of the school districts around here are kicking off three...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I've got a pretty good stock of beat up cards that I don't pull out much anymore. I think the most impressive beat up one is an Underground Sea with a hole through it that I picked up sight unseen for a fraction of the going price at the time. It's not too bad from the front unless you move a torn p...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Wurmcoil Engine

It's a good card. It's not one I'm likely to play unless there's some kind of synergy whether that's with the tokens, being an artifact, or the large chunks of lifegain, because 6 is still a lot of mana. That means it's usually below more synergistic 6-drops in deckbuilding consideration.

Hermes_ Sounds like you're having a rough week. Good luck getting healthy and hope you're doing well. How does Simpsons hold up if you weren't watching from the beginning/growing up with it? I think I've seen a couple episodes, the movie a while back, and a handful of assorted other stuff but it wa...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I've honestly enjoyed all of them. They're not great movies, but they've been fun enough.

As a disclaimer, The Velocipastor is high on my to-watch list right now and I'm hosting a viewing party for The Room later this month, so make of that whatever you want.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Some years ago there was a DVD release of the original trilogy that had the original theatrical releases as bonus features and that remains one of the better purchases in my life.

Completely agree that The Mandalorian is worth kicking Disney a few bucks for a month. I enjoyed that one a lot.

One interesting note is that this drop appears to be non-foil, which if so would be the only way to get a non-foil Saskia.
These are foil. It specifies it if you enter the sale on the secret lair site.

Re: Secret Lair

I've liked and picked up a few of them so far. The newest one I'm undecided on. I like the card choices, I like the art, I don't really like borderless cards. It's probably a pass for me.

Re: Do you intentionally misplay/hold back?

Voted sometimes. I generally play to win, with concessions to entertainment and table enjoyment being made in the deckbuilding stage. I'll make occasional exceptions for plays that look like they're going to be particularly entertaining even if they're not the most correct line. Revenge or holding b...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Why is it that new players gravitate toward standard so often I wonder? I did as well when I was newer. How I wish someone would've explained the low EV money pit that format is to me back then and pointed me toward EDH/Modern/Pauper/Cube instead. This one actually has an easy answer. You only need...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I did a fair number of drafts like that back around ALA/ZEN, mostly because there was a group of us that wanted to keep drafting after the scheduled events wrapped up (and it was something to do with prize packs). It works out as long as everyone knows exactly what they're agreeing to, better if peo...

Re: Bruna's Battle Cruiser

Fully a meme suggestion, but Parhelion II is kind of a literal angelic battle cruiser and that's what the thread title makes me think of whenever it pops up.

I recommend cutting either a mana rock or a card draw spell for that to fully get into the spirit of it.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Dread Cacodemon (Tues) & Mortify (Wed)

I'd put this above both Vindicate and Utter End personally. Instant speed and low CMC are the primary considerations for me when it comes to spot removal, followed closely by flexibility. Anguished Unmaking is definitely the top choice, then Generous Gift . Mortify is probably tied with Despark for ...

Mono-R Control with Jaya Ballard!

At some point. I haven't actually had an opportunity to get out and play since around the last time there was an update around 6 months back and I don't like recording changes without actually trying the cards (or at the very least, playing a game or two with the cards in the deck), which slows the ...

[mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Teferi's Response

Virtually all of my decks start with Wasteland / Strip Mine , so this should usually be able to find a target. The problem is that including cards to answer 1-2 cards in an opponent's deck is usually synonymous with adding dead cards - too many games where you're not going to draw it at the same tim...
