There is, as of me writing this, a grand total of 16 deserts you can play with this card in commander, all but one are from the Amonkhet block.
For him to really shine, we need some more deserts, but he is playable as is. Particularly due to the "You may play Desert lands from your graveyard." piece of rules text he has.
