I'm assuming this is the thread for Devoted Devastation as well?
I played in a 34 person Modern Minors today. 5 rounds.
Round 1 vs. Burn. Uh oh. This is what I did NOT want to face, as I don't have SB cards for it nor Finks main deck. In the first game, he burned my turn 2 Devoted Druid, but I played another one. When I was at 8 life, he had 3 cards in hand and 4 lands in play. I guess there's no double
Boros Charm? He has Eidolon of the Great Revel in play. I have another D Druid and play Finale of Devastation for Vizier of Remedies and infinite mana to play
Shalai, Voice of Plenty. He scoops. In the next game, I get turn 1 Giver of Runes. Damn, that card is Goooood. I get Druid and combo off pretty quickly again. My SB was literally 3 Path to Exile, double Scavenging Ooze, and Knight of Autumn. It's the only SB I had for it. 2-0.
Round 2 vs. UW Control. In the first game, my second Devoted Druid got me there as he went for
Force of Negation to stop my Finale of Devastation (after I Vizier and infinite mana) and not allow my Eternal Witness to get it back. Buuuut, I had just drawn another Finale of Devastation, so I did that one and won. Better lucky than good. The next game is super long, but I eventually get there with Finale of Devastation for Scavenging Ooze, preventing a draw of Snapcaster Mage for Path to Exile and gaining me life up to 5 and taking a hit from Celestial Colonnade to fall to 1. I have more than enough on the swing back, but we may have run out of time for Game 2 if I had lost. Thrun, the Last Troll was key in this one, but he did kill 2 Narset and 1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor along the way, which slowed me down. I also may have unnecessarily taken some shock damage early on because I had Path and Field of Ruin on my mind. Made 3 small mistakes, like finding my last basic with Path to Exile, so Field of Ruin gets none and there's 1 fewer mana to possibly regenerate Thrun. Attacking the 2nd Narset was probably not necessary. 2-0.
Round 3 vs. Mono White Eldrazi. He exiles SSG and does turn 1 Chalice of the Void on the play. My next 3 draws are 1 drops and I already had Giver and Noble Hierarch. I pass the turn at 8 life with Duskwatch Recruiter and a summoning sick Devoted Druid in play, He draws a land to blink both creatures with
Eldrazi Displacer and gets in for 8. In the next game, I keep on 2 land and he Ghost Quarters one with Leonin Arbiter in play. I luckily draw Birds of Paradise, then Devoted Druid, then I get the combo in time before I die. Didn't see another land, which slowed me, but got the right draw in time. In the final game, I get the combo pretty easily after he Dismembers my first Devoted Druid, then Thalia, Heretic Cathar. My next Devoted Druid comes down and I combo next turn. 2-1.
Round 4 vs. Eldrazi Tron. We ID 0-0-3.
Round 5 vs. Hollow Vine. We ID 0-0-3.
Top 8 vs. Esper Shadow. I kept a 2 land hand and it took me a while to get more than 1 3rd land. He played 2 Captain Ranger of Eos and I drew a 2nd and 3rd Finale of Devastation, so he locked me out after I used the first one to find Devoted Druid and had enough Shadows and Angler to finish me off. In the next game, he got flooded and I won with E Witnesses into Finale of Devastation and Path to Exile a bunch of times. I try to do the same in game 3, but he has enough pressure. I had kept because I had a double Giver of Runes in my opener and Birds of Paradise, but I had to protect while blocking to save damage and he got in a strong position. I finally found some lands and did Finale of Devastation for Tireless Tracker, hoping that I get it to 7/6 to give protection and swing for lethal. But I was 1 clue short on a turn, so I had to wait. He had no cards and I don't take lethal. I block Ranger Captain with Tireless Tracker and give it Pro White. The card he drew for the turn...Dismember. he uses it on my Tireless Tracker and I don't find enough blockers next turn to set up lethal. I had E Witness (I had done the loop a bit, but was mana starved for a while against a Gurmag Angler, Ranger Captain, Death's Shadow, and Plague Engineer on BoP) and Eladamri's Call that I had just drawn, but no way to find the final 2 pieces. I got Duskwatch Recruiter to see if I would have hit Vizier. I have no mana, so I know it's over. It wasn't Vizier anyway. :shrug:
Dismember - I literally wanted him to draw any non removal card. Ranger Captain, Death's Shadow, Thoughtseize, Inquisition, Thought Scour into one of these cards, Snapcaster Mage, Gurmag Angler, just not Path/Push/Dismember/Engineered Explosives) Sad days. 1-2.
Rough loss to end my night. It was sooooo close and I thought I was going to get it when he was empty handed and drew for the turn (Dismember ended my evening).
