I have a hell's caretaker and child of alara in play.
During my upkeep I use the caretaker to sack child of alara for ashaya, soul of the wild.

Does the caretaker (and my other creatures) live or die?

Your Ashaya will live but everything else dies. This is because the trigger from Child goes on the stack above the activated ability so the trigger resolves first. Then the activated ability resolves and you get Ashaya.
