Wording is confusing. Does Haktos have protection from CMC = 1 and 5 at all times?

If yes, could be good in Modern where removal is mostly CMC = 1. And even if people have Terminate or Abrupt Decay or Assassin's Trophy, there is a 67% chance they won't work.

I believe you are correct. Haktos should have protect from cmc 0, 1, and 5+ all the time (meaning he could technically go toe to toe with an Eldrazi titan and live).

And CMC=99! His Achilles heel is one number of the three printed on the card.

I really like this card for some reason. I wish it wasnt so mana intensive, but it looks really fun to play.

Oh, for a moment there I didn't realize that this was a new character referencing Greek myth rather than Thakolides the Mighty.

Neat design as an Achilles-reference and totally Sedge Scorpion-proof. As opposed to what the art suggests easily dies to Hail of Arrows.

I like that this has Constructed application and the randomness is on an acceptable level.

So in someway, he is almost guarantee to hit with his attack unless you have a spell or blocker of that weakness, which explains why he isn't 7 power. (or it'd be three hit if less unchecked)

Can't voltron him due to players not knowing which number it will be, though anthems is possible. Perhaps a new brewing thread should be made.

Get your Obsidian Battle-Axe out!

Edit: Pairs so nicely with Iroas!

That's nasty. Just point all your removal at his weak cmc and run roughshod over your opponent. I could see top ending him in a RW aggro deck to follow up with after a sweeper.

You still have to hope that 3 is the chosen number in order for the Battle-Axe to work so I don't think it will work often enough to matter.

I'm usually not a big fan of Boros combat-focused commanders, but Haktos looks awesome. Also one of the most awkward voltron commanders ever, unless you limit the CMCs of your pumps. Alternatively, Cloudshift to reset the number?

He always has protection from Cloudshift.

What! Doesn't it auto-attach if you want it to?

But protection also implies cannot have permanents of that quality attached to him (ie auras and equipment fall off/fail to attach, even untargeted)

The only way to voltron this consistently is to use X-spells, and honestly there are no good ones in R/W.
Legion's Initiative would be good with it.

But I would not build this as voltron - I would just make it a deck with a lot of damage-based sweepers. Blasphemous Act, for example.

Sanctum Prelate or Chalice of the Void to lock off any targeted removal.

Ah, yes, that's right about protection. I'm thinking of getting around shroud.

Well, if you fire enough arrows at him, one of them is bound to hit his weakspot, right? :P
