Barbecube's Card Cookout

This is the thread where I'll be keeping miscellaneous designs. To start, let's look at some random designs from here and there. I picked some weird ones!

Conjurer's Sleight
2UU
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant creature card in a graveyard
If a creature would enter the battlefield under a player's control, you may put enchanted creature card onto the battlefield under that player's control instead and put any creature card associated with that creature into its owner's graveyard, then attach Conjurer's Sleight to a creature card in a graveyard.
Namelessness
3CC
Creature — Incarnation
Namelessness can't be blocked except by colorless creatures.
As long as Namelessness is on the battlefield or in your graveyard and you control a land named Wastes, creatures don't have names or creature types.
4/4
Iquati Aetherform
2W
Enchantment Creature — Illusion
Flying
Whenever you cast another enchantment spell, create 2/2 white Illusion enchantment creature token with flying.

Finally got around to posting this after you chose the name, eh?

Conjurer's Sleight is a cool idea, though confusing. Associated? I could definitely see something like it being printed, though "enchant card in a graveyard" might push it into MH2 rather than a Standard set.

Namelessness is cool. Lack of identity or individualism is probably the best fit for a colorless incarnation. Fairly strong at first glance, though there would likely be enough artifact creatures or colorless ones in general that it wouldn't be too oppressive for limited.

Aetherform is a cool white riff on Murmuring Mystic. Quite strong, but I'm a big fan!

I wasn't sure how to handle Conjurer's Sleight because it can affect tokens, but those don't have cards on them. Thus the odd wording.

Conjurer's Sleight - Not sure what to make of this card. It does seem fun, but for one thing it might need B in the cost. If you just made this affect nontoken creatures you could clean up a couple problems.

Namelessness - Interesting and hardly overpowered, I think. A card that's primarily a hoser feels like odd space for a classic-style Incarnation.

Iquati Aetherform - This is really strong for a three-mana uncommon; if enchantment creatures were a set theme I would be very wary of this in Limited as it could easily take over games.

Conjurer's Sleight revised:
Conjurer's Sleight
2UU
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant creature card in a graveyard
If a creature would enter the battlefield under a player's control, you may exile that creature and put enchanted creature card onto the battlefield under that player's control instead, then attach Conjurer's Sleight to a creature card in a graveyard.

I've been experimenting with this mechanic, Glory:
Kingfisher Knight
2WU
Creature — Human Knight
Glory 2 (This creature is glorious and gets +2/+2 as long as it's enchanted, equipped, or was a target this turn.)
As long as Kingfisher Knight is glorious, it has flying and first strike.

AND I WON'T GIVE IN, I WON'T GIVE IN
TILL I'M VICTORIOUS

Ahem. Yeah, I like the mechanic quite a lot! Reminds me of renown and heroic.

Dig Into Inspiration
2U
Sorcery
Exile the top card of your library. Repeat this process until the total converted mana cost of cards exiled with Dig Into Inspiration is greater than 4, then put the exiled cards into your hand.

Dig Into Inspiration - Looks good at first glance but in practice might do... unintended things. Will probably get you lots of lands, for example. Was this a Demonlord Belzenlok riff?

It wasn't consciously related, but I might have had that card in my head; I just wanted to develop some new flavors of card draw.

Here's a set of PW deck cards I made for a design contest going on at the Custom Magic Discord:

Gaius, Cruel Gladiator
3BR
Legendary Planeswalker — Gaius
+1: Until end of turn, Gaius, Cruel Gladiator becomes a 3/3 Human Soldier creature with menace. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn.
-3: Gaius deals 3 damage to target player or planeswalker. You gain 3 life.
-7: Gain control of up to two target creatures. Untap them. They gain haste until end of turn. At the beginning of your end step, sacrifice them.

4
Gory Performance
2BR
Sorcery
Destroy target creature. Gory Performance deals 2 damage to its controller. You may search your library and/or graveyard for a card named Gaius, Cruel Gladiator, reveal it, and put it into your hand. If you search your library this way, shuffle it.

Motley Challengers
2R
Creature — Human Warrior
First strike
When Motley Challengers enters the battlefield, if you control a Gaius planeswalker, it gains haste until end of turn.

Gaius' success inspired newcomers to fight in the arena.

Those look fun and reasonable enough, if a bit similar to the Angrath RIX ones. My favorite of these is always the PW-tribal uncommon and that body with those abilities is a good enough payoff.

I should make custom PW deck cards myself.

The next set of challenge cards shows off a mechanic, flourish.
Farmers of the Luxa
1G
Creature — Human Peasant
When Farmers of the Luxa enters the battlefield, flourish. (Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature or create a colorless Field land token.)
: Add . Activate this ability only if you control a Field.

1/2
Deepriver Tender
1GU
Creature — Human Cleric
When Deepriver Tender enters the battlefield, flourish. (Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature or create a colorless Field land token.)
Whenever a Field enters the battlefield under your control, you may have target creature become a 3/3 Crocodile until end of turn. (It doesn't lose its abilities.)

2/2
Hierophant of Dawns
2GWU
Creature — Angel Cleric
Flying
Whenever Hierophant of Dawns attacks, flourish. (Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature or create a colorless Field land token.)
As long as you control at least 5 Fields, Hierophant of Dawns gets +4/+4 and has indestructible.

Hey, alright, that's pretty flavorful. Fabricate-style modal mechanics are something I like. I would have to assume that this is for a set titled "Rebuilding of Amonkhet" or similar. As more proof of concept I'd like to see the designs that you no doubt actually have, that say something like "Fields you control have [some tap ability]."

I don't actually have those, because I'm trying to create a compromise for the land-token haters. If I were to do them, they'd probably look like this...
Barley Thresher
1G
Creature — Human Peasant
When Barley Thresher enters the battlefield, flourish. (Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature or create a colorless Field land token.)
Fields you control have, "T, Sacrifice this land: Add GG."

Here's a new take on white removal.
Communal Detention
2W
Enchantment
When Communal Detention enters the battlefield, exile target creature until you control no permanents named Communal Detention.

That's interesting, particularly at common. "Shared names" theme for Limited, y/n?

Definitely doable, void_nothing. We've seen it a few times in canon sets as a minor theme (Pack Mastiff in M20, for example), though one great custom example of it, imo, would be Tales of Old Jiangshi, a set in Magic Set Editor Modern by Timespiraled/Snapdrachen.

TOJ has a lot of good ideas on ways to execute the theme if it's something you'd be interested in, like its Practiced mechanic. Well worth giving a look.
