I dont think Sawblade Scamp is playable, most spellslinger cut Thermo-Alchemist nowadays, granted it doesnt have haste, but its calable of multiple activations each turn cycle.
Do think its playable on standard burn if its a good standard tbh.

I like the rare oilcounters though, mercurial spelldancer serms fine, but the red one that discards hand and draws 4 might be worth testing. Power level in this set doesnt seem crazy, thankfully

Cards ive flagged to pick up so far

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines - its a love and hate card, what more can I say? I'll play her in Karador
Swooping Lookout - Raffine goes brrrr
Sheoldred's Edict - versatile instants always go wel in Toshiro Umezawa
Black Sun's Zenith maybe?? I'd rather have my x spells be finishers, but toshiro does love his instants
Experimental Augury in Raff Capashen planeswalkers
The Eternal Wanderer for raff too. Im getting lowkey bothered she doesnt have a proper name
Mercurial Spelldancer and Vindictive Flamestoker might be maybeboard cards for Veyran, Voice of Duality
Ovika, Enigma Goliath seems good, it had protection, tokens have haste but 7mv is too much 😫
Gleeful Demolition i like versatile cards for 1mv.

New commanders

Karumonix, the Rat King super low curve rat plague could be fun. Whats the plan on mono black for a boardwipe? Mass reanimation?

I like the 2 color legendaries ive seen, mostly because they feel like 60 card format cards. I like it way more that way than designs like the new atraxa that's just boring value

Any cards with boros simbols that I can trade for I'll pick up for General Ferrous, but I dont buy for him, just trade

I haven't had a chance to try out Daring Piracy, but Urabrask's Forge is another Bitterblossom variant in red. Token is still Clamp-able, and it has artifact synergies.

I like Vindictive Flamestoker being a wizard for Harmonic Prodigy fun.

Expand the Sphere is somewhat interesting - it has a chance of missing, but it can grab nonbasics. Alternatively, just use it as double-proliferate. I could see it being played in decks with low basic land counts like Atraxa, Praetors' Voice.... or, slightly more relevant to my own decks, as another option after Cartographer's Survey to support Hermit Druid. Having a low basic count makes the traditional Cultivate / Kodama's Reach / etc land ramp package run out of targets pretty quickly, so it's interesting to see some alternatives. I guess I'm backing away from Hermit Druid shenanigans in my Samut deck, but Tasigur does still run into the issue of most ramp spells being bad to recur in the lategame, and this style of ramp is relevant for longer. Hmmm.... I don't think it quite makes the cut, but I'll keep an eye out for future options.

Kelsien, the Plague → Minthara, Merciless Soul → Otharri, Suns' Glory

That'll show those OG experience counter legends.

Otharri, Suns' Glory is sweet actually, I might be brewing with that.

Or it might be time to actually that experience counter deck that runs all of the experience counter cards (presumably Sisay, Weatherlight Captain as the commander to find them?) I've been mulling it over for several years, it'll probably be really bad, but I might pull off a win.

My Kelsien deck has morphed into that, playing all yhe experience counter creatures in mardu. It adds nice consistency for a general that gets hated out pretty quickly.

Clever Concealment is another type of Teferi's Protection and can be cast for ww often. Don't sleep on this one sky-rocketing in price as people figure out it's the best Commander card in the set.

Seem much worse than protection to me.

Still probably decent as the second copy

It can be cast for free if you have two white creatures.

The not being killed part is probably the most important part of teferi's protection, but concealment being freecast means you can easily keep it up in a very on-board, creature-focused, tap-out deck to counter board wipes. I don't think it's insane but it's a good card.

Just an uncommon but I love the design of Magmatic Sprinter. 3-power haster that eventually returns to hand, or a buyback spell that gives you more oil counters. Not sure if there's a commander that wants it, but it's very neat. Reminds me of Greenbelt Rampager.

March of the Machine will be the conclusion to the Dominaria United arc.

March of the Machine: The Aftermath
A Standard-legal micro set that wraps up loose ends from the previous arc. Will have Epilogue Boosters that feature five cards each. Set will also have a bundle and Collector Boosters.

Supplemental Sets
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth – Mid-year 2023

Image

Tales of Middle Earth is a partnership between Magic and Middle-Earth Enterprises, bringing to life a Modern-legal and fully-Draftable set.

Universes Beyond: Doctor Who – 2023

Image

Magic: The Gathering x Doctor Who combines two iconic franchises and will feature "four Commander decks, special card treatments, Collector Boosters, and a Secret Lair."

So which will tick off dirk more the LotR or Doctor Who? lol

@Hermes_ oh, it's for sure Dr who. Lotr is technically not public domain because copyright laws are ridiculous, but it's about as close to public domain as it gets. So it feels a lot less like some marketing scumbag is creaming their pants about brand integration whenever I play the cards.

Lotr also matches more closely with mtgs flavour ofc.

And finally, it seems like Dr who is having collector boosters without even bothering to be a proper set, just a bunch of commander decks. I dislike commander being targeted, and I really dislike collector boosters.

So yeah it's Dr who by a mile. Gross.

I for one plan on being among the hordes of people to make a Sauron Commander deck. I'll spend the entire game digging through my library for a particular legendary artifact only for my opponents to reveal they had it all along and then sacrifice it at the last second.

Honestly, I'd prefer Morgoth. They won't give me the option, almost certainly, but you never know.

That or Ungoliant would be freakin' sweet.

Maybe they can do cards from the Silmarillion next go around. I'm sure this set is going to sell like hotcakes so they'll probably be eager for more content. Of course, I wonder if they can get the rights for characters not in the main trilogy? It would be super cool.

Hotcakes sell well?

I am looking foward for the lotr set specially because since it isnt cmdr focused maybe some mono and two color legends can rock. Commander products seem to have more 3-5 and lately i haven't been into those as much lately

Honestly, it's doubtful. From what I understand Amazon's billions got them rights to like....a couple of footnotes and the rest of the Rings of Power is incredibly fleshed out from supposition. Which isn't surprising, but I mean if Amazon can't get good access I really doubt Hasbro will.

Part of that is really awesome to me; I'd like to see the cards, sure, but it's nice to be able to have one fandom that is popular, widely known and as yet mostly incorruptible by the almighty dollar.

Huh, I was about to guess LOTR for this one, because although it's closer to the fantasy feel of MtG, I also think it might lead to some rather predictable Commanders, and I thought you'd prefer the more interesting potential of Dr. Who.

Legolas? Elf Archer with reach. Gimli? Dwarf Warrior with trample. Aragorn? Human-matters lord. Gandalf? White (possibly Azorious) Wizard. Sauron? Black (Mardu/Rakdos/Grixis?) Demon. You get the idea.

The Hobbits might be more interesting if they decided to each one a unique color/mechanical identity.

@Sporegorger_Dragon personally I'd take it as a win if all the commanders from both sets were boring trash. The transformers being too interesting not to build was…conflicting.

There won't be any cards from the Silmarillion. They can't. I am not sure how it works, but when John Ronald sold the film rights to Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit) it seems to have also included rights to games derived from Lord of the Rings (merchandising rights). Video games, card games, Lord of the Rings Risk, etc.

Amazon got the rights to the same books - they just chose to focus on the Appendices of Lord of the Rings which has very little about the 2nd age included, but enough that they can make a story around it.
Do they also have merchandising rights?

In any case, the Tolkien estate would still own merchandising rights to The Silmarillion and they will never sell them or license them to anyone. (until they decide they want to make a few billion dollars, which I hope happens in my lifetime - fight me on this!)
If Amazon has the merchandising rights I could see characters/places from the series showing up in MtG. But what exactly would you want? Elendil?
Celebrimbor
Legendary Creature - Elf Artificer

Maybe

I think you can see from my post that I am interested in the Lord of the Rings stuff. I don't spend money on MtG any more (not worth it since I barely have time to play).
But I would spend money on everything that is made for Lord of the Rings, including collector boosters if I like the art.

I don't know what sort of person will be happy that Ichormoon Gauntlet exists, but I bet they prefer spectators to participants if you catch my drift.
