Actually pretty messy tbh.

Thoughts with everyone affected by the events unfolding since last night.
I sincerely hope for everyone's families rooted in Ukraine to be safe and sound, not forget to feel seen and sided with.

It's so weird to witness this war unfolding when they use your neighbor's playbook (turkey) which was used in the 70's to Cyprus, breaking the island in two parts. It's even weirder when those two countries, Russia and Turkey, have aligned interests. We are in a new age unfortunately, where international law is openly disregarded. I hope everyone stationed in Ukraine is safe.

I mean, they tried the "inflame ethnic tensions to get a loyal breakaway state" shtick and it got them an opportunistic mess in the Donbas that would collapse if they stopped dumping money into it. Shelling peoples' houses is not going to win them any local support. I'm not sure what Putin's planning, other than the sort of "total war" wank that was discredited by the London blitz. It's certainly destructive, and my heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, but I struggle to see what anyone stands to gain from this once the smoke clears.

Control masquerading as risk-minimization. That's about it, really. If you can't trust anyone, and any reliance on anyone else is seen as a liability, then the logical outgrowth of that is that your only option is to slowly conquer the world. It's silly and self-destructive, but it's also a flawed pattern of thinking that we humans are eminently susceptible to.
