M21 looking sweet so far. Good reprints to lower prices (Ugin, Azusa, Grim Tutor, Runed Halo), powerful generic answer card (Priest), interesting planeswalker designs, the return of phasing, and mill is getting keyworded. I'm pretty excited so far, at least for Modern.

Not loving the idea of Azusa, Nissa, Ugin, Uro, and other ramp cards in Standard. That sounds heinous.
Agree it is sweet, but although Grim tutor's haircut in price will be huge, Runed Halo, however, is only a couple of dollars here nowadays anyway, and not in that class of much needed reprint. It does add to Pioneer though.
Anybody who is anybody knew almost all the big spoiled reprints and even the new walker thanks to some juicy leaks, but the Azusa was not foretold at its rarity, that will catch some with their pants down.
I think they are getting the message about white, I certainly think it might have gotten through that if all it does is lame arse stuff with tokens and soldiers and go wide, then all it does is lose and nobody plays it. White needs to be a colour that hates on powerful linear strategies. If somebody's lame ass combo can't go off because someone had the temerity to cast a hate card and thinks it is unfun, that person can F*** off and play another game. We don't need those types of moaners here, and sooner or later they quit the game anyway, because that certain type of player- the one who thinks that opponents stopping them in any way is not for them- is made of pure salt.
Sadly containment priest is too late, and they have 5 years of white wasting away.
Runed halo is good for pioneer too.

They finally decided to put Containment Priest in Modern. About a year late.
Exactly my feeling. This is what I posted on my group of friend's whatsapp - Containment Priest is too strong for MH, Wotc, "prints it in Standard a bit later." :explode:

I still think there are a lot of cards that we all discussed for the possibility of being in Modern Horizons that never came to fruition. Now I realize that they can't print everything and I actually think they did a solid job in MH (I know, many don't agree). But stuff like Leovold, Emissary of Trest, Innocent Blood, and many more that I'm not thinking of right now could also be okay.

Why are they printing stuff like Azusa and Ugin instead of those cards? If any type of ramp is viable, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is going to be a pain in the ass. You think we needed better answers to planeswalkers before? No, now we literally need, 0: destroy target planeswalker, draw a card.
We need
1 mana white enchantment- flash- name a card, its activated abilities can't be played. Draw a card.
Ugin is there to ensure sales. Artificially high price due to scarcity, widely wanted for EDH but not affordable. They do not care about standard bans anymore. If ramp is too good they will ban something.

I think that would be an amazing design for a white 'needle'.

I've been playing Yorion tonight, and it still puts in work. The rest of the Companions are pretty bad now, on Arena that is.

cfusionpm Here's the list. Grixis Delver.
I'm kind of interested in exploring some of these strategies again once paper opens back up.

I'm not really sure that deck route is how I want to go, but I do think Sprite Dragon is a good call.

I'm personally thinking some sort of Aether Vial fueled Faeries (colors TBD, but probably not playing the Dragon) because Vial is enough to make Spellstutter Sprite viable, or a RUG "Delver" list leveraging Dragon alongside the suspend rhinos and some other spells matter creatures.
I just had a game that made me remember this comment: I was facing UW Spirits with Aether Vial, and I stole their Vial on 2 with Archmage's Charm.

Dude, playing Grixis Delver with a Vial out was the greatest feeling ever. Sure it was draw-dependant because I had 2 Snapcaster Mage and a Sprite Dragon in hand, but man. Vialing in Sprite Dragon and still having 4 mana open to cast 2 cantrips and a removal spell meant instant swing for 4, followed by 7 the next turn.

Sprite Dragon having haste appearently is a huge deal when paired with Vial because you get to swing with a flying Tarmogoyf the turn it comes down. Also, Vial itself pumps Dragon if you draw redundant copies.

A Vial deck with Spellstutter Sprite, Sprite Dragon, Snapcaster Mage could definitly be worth exploring. Don't think you want more than 12 creatures in a Sprite Dragon deck because the card gets worse and worse otherwise.

Also on a general note, as far as i can tell, the change to the Companion mechanic is a success. Companions still are in a lot of decks, but the important factor is that they are actually cast a fraction of the amount they were before. the Burn and Prowess decks I have faced e.g. still have Lurrus, but it feels like a pretty minor advantage.

I'm on Grixis Delver currently, and Lurrus still fits in there wonderfully. Delver's game plan is a bit slower and grindier, and Lurrus adds a nice late game dimension to the deck it didn't have previously.

But in many other decks, running Lurrus just doesn't seem worth it anymore. Ditto with Yorion.

The most important change IMO: Mishra's Bauble has been dropped from practically all Lurrus decks. People are remembering that Bauble is a dogshit magic card that is only good when it being a 0cmc artifact is relevant.

The only deck that seems possibly problematic in connection with Companions is UGx Yorion Scapeshift. On the other hand, I'm not necessarily against letting a dedicated Scapeshift deck have its day. Why not. It's like a slower but harder-to-interact-with Twin. I'm kind of ok with that.

I definitly think Yorion is still playable, and the Companions could still see play as more...measured additions to the game. When I cast Yorion right now, I'm still pulling way ahead, you just do it later in the game.

Agree with your stance on bauble big time. :D

I hope this is true and that Companions are no longer busted. I don't mind WotC selling Ikoria - I just don't want it to happen at the cost of every format being dog :poop:
Standard - Will pick up what's good when paper starts
Pre Modern - Do not own anymore
Pioneer - DEAD
Modern - Amulet Titan, Elementals, Trollementals, BR Asmo/Goryo's, Yawmoth Chord
Legacy - No more cards, will rebuy Sneak Show when I can
Limited - Will start when paper starts
Commander - Nope

I agree too. Definitely been feeling that for years, and one of the big reasons why I hated the move towards them in Shadow (also why I never bought foil copies). It's not a good card unless you specifically want a free artifact that happens to draw a card. Otherwise it's total trash and worse than nearly every spell cantrip.

Did someone predict gitaxian probe? I am sure the answer is no, but I would be happy to see a source on that.
Most people were predicting a ban on become eminence at that time, not probe. But they were being used together alot, so the the correct problems decks were identified by the players but WOTC picked a different card to ban from the decks.

Yep. I've got some ideas to play with it still. I'm not sure, so I need a judge to let me know, but does a Brazen Borrower count as a spell while cast as an adventure?

That's why I was also thinking the rhinos, but that might be too much effort. Maybe some sort of spell that makes token creatures is realistic though. Or creatures that give you spells, like Snapcaster Mage where you can always vial him in, then just pay for the flashback. You're right that there's an upper limit on creatures you can play though. SSS probably needs some of the 1 drop faeries to make it work.

Anyways, just ideas I'm throwing around, Sprite Dragon powering up from later vials is a definite plus in that strategy as far as I'm concerned.

It counts as a spell no matter how you cast it :P But, yes, it counts as a noncreature spell for the Dragon if you cast Petty Theft.

That's what I meant. Which lets you cheat on the creature count a little bit (and also buff the faerie count).

I think with the short comment "ban borrower." People don't know if you're kidding, serious, or just wishing it was gone.

Yorion is still the danger one for Legacy, and long term, Modern. They could both end up being snow 4c piles of astrolabe plus the latest busted green or simic stuff that does not eat a ban if current trends continue.....

I mean originally the companions came from outside the game. How busted would that be with the 2 mana draw 3 blue m21 card spoiled?

I just think there will be broken green and similar cards for a while, whilst white will be way short of what it needs to be, which is the color of control and hatebears, not underpowered go wide strategies.

That 2 Mana Draw 3, is really only 'draw 3' if you (in Modern) spend the extra 2 for the Snaps, or Past in Flames, or whatever.

Its enough to entice me, but thats because I'm a sucker for Snaps. :p

Either way, a 4c Astrolabe pile + Yorion is for sure going to be viable.

This should really have been an instant though. It's a decent card, the hoops aren't really difficult to jump through.

I'm sure everyone saw the new b&r for historic today. That is 3 b&r announcements since may 18. I expect another relitivly soon for modern, there is just so much movement going on. After both eldrazi and hogaak things were unbanned, I feel companions probably do compare to those so here's to hoping.

The problem, at least my problem, with Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is that he does 90% of his damage as soon as he enters the battlefield. He comes down and is like "Nice board you got there. Seems like you invested a lot of cards and mana into... and their gone." He is the type of planeswalker you need to answer before he even touches the battlefield.

I mean, I don't own Uro (but planning to do so very soon). It is definitely a pushed and extremely good card. But it is nowhere near banning levels. I think banning Uro would be an absolute mistake and (at least currently) completely unjustified.

There is a discussion about power creep to be had of course, but that doesn't mean that we should also stop new powerful cards to enter the format. I think Uro is one of these powerful cards that are fine being there.
Counter, draw a card.
