Drannith Magistrate seems particularly interesting, given that it shuts off casting things from the command zone. That seems.... pretty significant.
As much as I want white to receive more buffs in EDH, this one affects the format's foundation like Karaka. It would've been more ok if it costs WWW, or have it affect yourself as well. It is a creature though, not an enchantment or artifact, and every color has a way to remove creatures.

Obosh, the RB companion, looks solid. Doubling damage is quite the payoff, & being limited to odd cards strikes me as better than being limited to even ones.

My weird hope is that they adjust the commander rules to treat commander casts as coming from your hand, with the bonus side effect of making the myojins and wild pair and possibility storm work right :)

Yeah, he's probably the best of the bunch (excluding lutri obv).

No evens is really rough too, though. NO 2-mana mana rocks. In BR. Let that sink in. No demonic. No mana crypt. No boots. no animate dead. no terminate. no blood artist. It's definitely not nothing.

almost makes me want to try making a kaervek that uses him. It'd royally screw up my curve though. Delay Kaervek by at least a turn. Might go into the 99 though.

There are a few cards I'm interested in from the previews so far, even though I'm not big on Companion, Mutate or keyword counters.

Luminous Broodmoth - Partial wrath protection is a pretty solid ability, especially in decks with hatebears or mana dorks. While it's likely to attract single target removal prior to a wrath, rather than allowing you to make a wrath one-sided (e.g. Faith's Reward), that it acts as a wrath deterrent and delivers beats while doing so is pretty nice. Regarding keyword counters, I think having this as an isolated source will be easy to manage, given it produces a large number of the same counter in a memorable scenario.

Fiend Artisan - If only this card was mono-Green! I'd love a Zenith Pod for upgrading mana dorks after they've done their job. All of a sudden my stance on hybrid mana might be shifting :P (Not really, but if the rules ever do change here's a card that's going to be a snap include for me).

Drannith Magistrate - Hoo boy. The maybe-dad of Curse Guy (unless it's a pre/desparked Curse Guy?) and soon-to-be partner in fugitiveness (Fugitivity? Anemonemone?) of Lavinia, Azorius Renegade is surprisingly strong; he shuts down so much and does it asymmetrically. He'd be amazing even if his ability was symmetrical, notably for commanders like Derevi who can circumvent it. Will he be banned? I doubt it. While he is a significant step up from Song of the Dryads and the like, our new wizard friend is easy enough to answer and doesn't require you to warp your deck to do so.

E: Typo.

reille, the everwise: cool new outside-the-box commander or obnoxious combo machine? It's a neat ability, I hope it doesn't end up being totally busted (my thoughts whenever any new soon-to-be-busted commander gets spoiled).

Betcha firestorm finally gains some traction. Poor baby's only at 318 decks on EDHrec, what a travesty.

Rielle, the Everwise looks very powerful. Turns Faithless Looting into a draw 4, and One with Nothing into a 1-mana, instant-speed personal Windfall. Also comes with a free Runechanter's Pike effect, which makes it interesting for voltron, and somewhat comparable to Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest.

Mythos of Brokkos looks pretty solid, assuming you cast it for full value - essentially Demonic Tutor + Regrowth stapled together, although limiting to permanents is a significant restriction.

Shark Typooon is amazing flavor. Another mana over Metallurgic Summonings, but the tokens have flying. Hmmm...

Migration Path is mildly interesting as an upgrade over Explosive Vegetation in the decks that run it.

Re: Drannith Magistrate - while it does look powerful, I don't think it to be bannable - every color combination has plenty of answers to a 2 mana 1/3 with no protection. My one concern is at that price, it will often come down before people can cast their commanders.... but on the other hand, that's sort of the point of hatebears.

Well, here's to hoping this is part of a cycle of enchantments that cycle for an effect, similar to the decree cycle.

Negative. My Gishath deck already runs Gratuitous Violence.

1) Shark Typhoon is amazing flavor. 2) It's going straight in my high CMC-matters decks.

Man, this set has the most commander hits that I can recall in a while.
is flat out amazing. Its a good card, though a bit pricy, and the cool factor is through the roof. I don't have a deck for this atm but its awesome enough that one will definitely be put together!
should have been a white legendary. Would make sense for Mothra and give white a card advantage option. As is I love it for flickery type deck that tries to utilize ETB.
is going straight into my mono-green control deck

I'm super hype for - pretty much every blue deck I play is some sort of Coastal Piracy deck so more copies is fantastic
has potential to be pretty strong. A reusable tutor in colours that often want things to die...

I'm a massive fan of Quartz Forest Crusher (translated - the trample token guy), thats really cool design and will fit easily into any RG stompy deck

But man pride of place atm goes to mr Obosh, the Burrower. Its not often the RB element of a cycle can compete with the UG one but this guy has that potential. I'm a huge fan of anything that can circumvent the incredible 40 life of commander and having access to a one sided damage doubler can certainly do that.

(Edit - Sorry I'm not sure why my post looks weird and can't seem to fix it)
Currently building: ww Bruna, the Fading Light (card advantage tribal / reanimator)

My thoughts on the commanders so far:

Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt: kind of a middling mutate effect for commander - middling enough that I doubt I'd run other mutate creatures instead of just more removal - though a 3-power double-striker for 4 isn't exactly bad. This might make more sense mutating onto anything with big power, as a way to provide double strike and commander-ness with a bonus removal spell tacked on. mana rock on 2, abyssal persecutor on 3, snapdax on 4, kill someone on 5 is not a bad curve out. Not the most exciting but it could be decent.

Brokkos, apex of forever: looks like a control wincon to me. This guy is similar to snapdax in that it's all about finding a good target to make him into a combat monster, except that he provides that stats instead of the keywords. So you're looking for targets that will be able to leverage his 6 power effectively, like cephalid constable.

Nethroi, Apex of Death: Not excited about this one, though I'm sure many are. The cost is high, the condition seems tough to set up seems difficult and telegraphed. Seems best as a way to recover in the late-game, after playing a bunch of graft creatures and whatnot. Or maybe some buried alive combo, idk. A 7-drop that needs a target and is vulnerable to grave hate seems pretty disruptable though. Probably a good candidate for running other mutate creatures and mutating onto it, instead. At any rate, not my cuppa.

Vadrok, Apex of Thunder: I keep thinking of him as being like sun titan, but he's obviously a lot more complicated than that. @darrenhabib had the brilliant idea to use him with self-bouncing creatures like glimmerfang, which seems sweet, but also I'm not sure if I can think of a great way to abuse a 2-card combo that effectively costs a 3-mana from your graveyard for 5 mana once per turn. You could recur equipment...wheel a bunch...play some removal...idk. With flash it gets more exciting, but it still seems like a lot of work. I want to figure him out, but I don't really see a plan for him yet beyond bouncing him.

Illuna, Apex of Wishes: Ugh, just the kind of thing I don't really like. You're really only here for the trigger, probably, but if you're including little weenie tokens or hexproof dudes or additional mutators to trigger her again, you're going to hit that garbage when you're trying to hit something big. You could just play a draw-heavy control deck with some tokens and then one omniscience, but that's obviously really boring and linear. I don't like the exile part either, if you go light on targets you might end up exiling most of your deck, and nexus of fate is no guarantor of safety. Maybe there's a fun way to build her, but I don't see anything I like yet.

Yidaro, Wandering Monster: Obviously not great for commander. Is there a way to use that trigger....um....technically yes. Practically? absolutely not.

Kogla, the Titan Ape: not a bad mono-green option. human etb synergy, removal on cast as well as attack, and just generally pretty strong. Probably nothing broken but just solid. Who knows, I might build it if I get bored.

General Kudro of Drannith: Idk why but I just love this card. I just really think it does a great job of matching the flavor and mechanics. I'm not much of a tribal guy, but I could see playing him as a token control commander. Pretty sweet to have grave hate and removal all from the CZ.

Chevill, Bane of Monsters: Toss a coin to your witcher...anyway, this guy mostly reads as glissa-lite. He's cheaper and doesn't need artifacts for value, but the ceiling is so much lower and seems less fun to build around him. I'm sure he'll find his way into the 99 but probably not the CZ.

Zilortha, strength incarnate: kinda confused this is mythic. Anyway it's not very interesting imo. Doran tends to have way better scaling options. You can find tons of creatures with 5+ toughness at 2 mana. Not so much 5+ power. No thanks, too boring.

Obosh, the Burrower: definitely the coolest of the companions, imo. I might try adding him as a companion to my Kaervek deck, though it'll shoot the mana ramp in the foot, leg, and head and is almost certainly not worth it. As a commander he seems alright, there might be cool combos a la gisela. Still pretty restrictive though. In the 99 he seems decent, if I can't companion him with Kaervek he'll likely end up in the 99.

keruga, the macrosage: oh ok, so I don't get to play ANY good cards. That's a bit rough. And in return I get a decent draw spell. Ahhhhh.......no. As a commander, he's pretty awful to. In the 99 he might be alright.

Umori, the Collector: If you wanted to make all-creatures for some reason I guess it's alright. Potentially some artifact combos, though that really restricts your commander. In the 99 he's honestly pretty solid, though, cloud key stapled onto a pretty efficient body. Not amazing but no slouch.

Gyruda, doom of the depths: not the kind of payoff I want for that tight restriction. The mortuary combo is pretty adorable, but I doubt it's got any serious legs, seems pretty easy to see coming and solve. Otherwise I'd really need to be blinking a lot to want him. In the CZ, similar thing tbh, though you could set him up with a vamp tutor for gin gitaxias or whatever dumb crap. In the 99 I guess he's alright, but I'm just not looking for a 6/6 to be stapled onto my more-restrictive extract from darkness unless I can blink it or something, and I doubt I'd end up with a lot of even creatures just by accident.

Lutri, the Spellchaser: literally who?

Kalamax, the Stormsire has potential to be obnoxious I think.

Consider the following: accelerate into Kalamax on t3, then attack on turn 4, and before damage cast (and copy) Rush of Adrenaline, Giant Growth, and Brute Force to beat face with a 23/21 with trample.

Add in shenanigans with Bonus Round, Hardened Scales, Pir, Imaginative Rascal, Steady Progress, and Volt Charge to really ratchet things up.

I just don't like seeing yet another 4 cmc commander that seems like so much of a "must kill on sight" target.

EDIT: Oh my goodness, read the card again and saw that it says "first" instant each turn. Thank goodness. Still good though.

A clever person would have realized that's why I put a joke there, instead of an actual analysis of the card like I did for every other potential commander.

Luckily you're a clever person, so of course you already realized that and you were just playing along with the joke. Right? ;)

I think Footfall Crater is quietly very good. Cycling when you don't need it, evasion and haste when you do, very affordable either way. This feels like one of those things where the only true opportunity cost is the volume of the slot it takes up. Most rxvoltron decks could use this.

I know, right? The fact it cycles for all of one mana makes this feel like the opportunity cost is negligible. I'm seriously considering it for one of my decks.

Tayam, Luminous Enigma looks like fun. Two abilities with some synergy that are quietly good. Not obviously explosive, but very value-over-time that fuels a pretty great pile of permanents. Not-directly-obvious, with multiple directions to go. Isn't painting a huge target on itself since it'll likely be a cog in a machine, as it were. Granting stuff vigilance is one of those nice things to have on a multiplayer game, too.

Might give 'em a spin at the helm of what is currently my Karador, as it is already somewhat a token/counter deck, and on a quick count Tayam could recur almost half of the nonland cards without modifying anything...

Also, Tayam just looks pretty freakin's spiffy. Celestial nightmare horned anteater thing.
36 decks or so...
