I really hate the notion that keeps popping up in fandom that if someone goes 'hey maybe tone down the vitrol' in a space dedicated to the fandom, they're demanding hysterical loyalty or cynic stoicism. Perhaps they're just requesting that you treat other players like human beings, and not come into a space dedicated to something and proceed to loudly defecate all over it. Or at the very least, when you do and someone goes "hey, that's a bit much, people still like this even if they're not you", consider leaving it at that, rather than insisting that people are silencing you.
Where was the vitriol? I said I didn't like a card. If you like it, that's fine. You didn't make it, or do the art for it, and even if the people who did were in this forum for some reason, I'm not angry enough to badger them. Equating any expression of distaste or disinterest to "vitriol" becomes a demand for absolute loyalty. This is not a space dedicated to Chatterfang. If I had gone into someone's Chattefang deck thread saying I didn't like it, then you would have some grounds. This is a space dedicated to discussion, both positive and negative, of all new cards with regards to EDH. That wasn't even what American Spirit was asking of me, rather, he was asking that I not have expectations of new legends, at least regarding tone and flavor. Nor did I claim I was being silenced, rather, I disagreed with the implication that one shouldn't have expectations about one's hobby. If I was being vitriolic, that would probably be something to raise with the moderators, rather in a post.

The GW Sword immediately enters the top three EDH Swords of all time. While SoFaF is pretty indisputably in the lead, I think this one might edge out Fire and Ice for the runner-up spot. A lot of builds should have some ETB utility to make repeated use of with this, and nearly all decks appreciate ramp.

At least Maro doesn't have stain glass religious art of squirrels as a profile pic.
Lol, touché.

Though for the record, I use the phelddagrif art as my profile pic because of my love of the card's mechanics, not its type line (and also my love of how much effort went into that alter - I double sleeve my phelddagrif but not my time twister, lol). And personally I find hippo Pope to be a better joke than the third (or is it fourth?) time around for killer squirrels in magic but YMMV. I didn't mind squirrels the first time, but then I had just started playing. Most jokes don't get better with repetition.
A few people at wotc have said its one of the most popular kinds of decks which is why every has set has some tribal. If you want it to stop your gonna need to convince people to stop wanting to play tribal.
I don't actually expect it to stop, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to roll my eyes from the sidelines. Also everyone who likes building tribal decks is a hack don't you dare @ me.

Point is everyone has thier pet creature type/card/deck type/ect and it seems and for the longest time the powers that be didn't let squirrels in black boarder magic, so I can see why Maro is really excited and to poo-poo on that just seems like being a dick for no real reason. Like maybe if squirrels end up a op deck type but as far as I'm aware only elves and humans are really competitive.

I'll be a little mad at the hypocrisy if this is allowed to run free while Iona stays banned.

Probably to control Eldrazi and kick the last remains of Affinity in modern? Good hate piece is good, obviously miserable enough at casual tables that I don't think people will play it much there. Even for a hatebears deck, this seems needlessly oppressive. Might have a place in cEDH, but I don't play that.

Neither were played much in casual tables, but Iona, being a general, cast a shadow over mono-color decks, which the RC clearly wanted to give more of a chance. People considering putting together monocolor decks would change their minds at the idea that they might see an Iona at the table, but I don't think anyone is going to reconsider their general in light of this. If this does see play in casual tables beyond a handful of griefers, then it should catch a ban, and very likely will.

I'll note that for Void Mirror, you can still resolve colorless cards if you have colored mana to spend. But if you're running a colorless deck and don't have incidental colored mana generation...... yeah, this looks incredibly miserable. Not sure if I'd throw it into random decks though, since colorless decks aren't that common. It does also hate on free spells and cascade / similar mechanics, but... still a bit niche.

Jeez, I didn't realize MaRo was here. How awkward. I guess we should never make light jabs at public figures in case it hurts their feelings.

I don't recall them banning all the odyssey squirrels. I must have missed that.

If Maro made custom squirrel cards that he only used when playing with friends then criticizing that would be "being a dick for no real reason". But if he's putting them in the actual set that I'm going to be spending my actual cash on - or at a minimum, the cards other people will be playing against me when I'm playing the decks I spent actual cash on - then I think that gives me a right to an opinion on what I do, and don't, want to see in that set. Now, granted, I'd rather see a hundred squirrels than another Expropriate, Bolas's Citadel, or Paradox Engine, but I still think the joke is very played out and tired. I'm rolling my eyes, not grabbing my pitchfork.

I really don't care too much what ends up competitive or not. Especially not in other constructed formats.

And not to go too deep - and not that I have any real evidence to support this - but I always found his squirrel obsession to read as a bit performative tbh. Or maybe I just have a hard time believing someone could be THAT committed to the joke, that he's still pushing for it after 3-4 times and almost as many decades.

1) nobody is going to play it.
2) colorless decks are a way narrower subset than monocolor decks.
3) imo it's way easier to break out of, running some random colored lands is pretty trivial compared to needing colorless creature removal.

Goes in Muldrotha, obviously, and probably the discard decks (Rielle, etc). Probably a combo piece somewhere. It's a niche thing for discard and graveyard decks, like its predecessor. It's a colorless bear, I guess, if anyone wants that.

Lol, that card is $15? I guess that'll look ridiculous in one direction or another in a few months.

I'm not a combo expert but I can't think of anything important LED does that you still get from DL. No bomberman combo, no yawgwill for 6 mana in a turn, no 4 mana commander on turn 1. I mean Grim Monolith costs 2, gives 3, and doesn't make you discard your hand or even sacrifice itself so.....?

I guess you might be able to go infinite with some sort of creature reanimation engine + haste but I can't think of a way to do that offhand that isn't janky af. But again, not a combo guy.

The protection is going to be a bit double-edged, as it were, in Feather, given that it stops my own blink effects. If it's cheap enough, I'll test it.

I dislike Diamond Lion in EDH. It just goes in too many decks. Reanimator strategies, Kess decks, Flashback strategies, Muldrotha and so on. I'm more of not a big fan of cards that go in a bunch of decks tbh. But it is a modern set, I guess its okay. I dont see it being oppresive but I know nothing

Void nothing theres this deck thats alwaya almost good in modern that runs arround As Foretold or Electrodominance effects. I think its good against those decks, taking a whole turn against Tron that often run forests/can crack a star to filter a colorless doesnt sound that good to me. Another one of the "tron killers" that dont actually kill tron.

I don't think it's good in any of those contexts.

Reanimator? Hope you've got a reanimation effect that's not in your hand. There are infinitely better ways to discard a card if that's all you want to do. going all-in on one big reanimation seems like suicide to me.

Kess and Muldrotha - I mean how hard up are you for mana? If someone kills your commander and you just pitched your hand, you are utterly screwed. Seems like an insane risk.

And on top of that - even if you had a commander like Rielle, the Everwise that can completely negate the downside of discarding your hand - you still paid 2 mana to get 3 mana at the cost of a card, and had to wait a turn and risk it getting removed (likely by collateral damage since I doubt someone would use a single-target spell on it)...is that even good? Like if we just deleted the discard your hand bit, is that a card you'd want to play in most decks? It would have its purposes for sure, but it's only marginally better than Pentad Prism and that card sees very little play outside of counter manipulation decks.

It probably has some use cases but imo it's a very very VERY niche card. If there's some combo in cEDH then maybe it'll get played there, but I'd be shocked if it was good in regular commander.

It's the addition of haste that's going to make it significantly weaker than it's namesake. Not impossible to combo with, just more hoops to jump through. Not something I'm interested in either, so I probably won't explore it. Most likely the combo line is some sort of Underworld Breach variant.

Sword of Hearth and Home is....pretty great. The basic doesn't enter tapped which is neat.

Void Mirror - I think it's going to be one of those cards that looks worse to play against on face value than it is in practice. Sure, it turns brown decks off. But ultimately for anything else that uses even a small dose of the color pie, so long as you can generate colored mana to cast whatever, you're gonna be just fine. I doubt very much it's going to be heavily format warping, aside from perhaps forcing less reliance on rocks for acceleration, and even then it'll only be at the spikier end of the format you'll see it played commonly.

Yeah I have mostly moved off of sword type effects but I might have to try it out for the drake shenanigans. Unless they print a great anti-artifact hatebear in white, which I am still yearning for :)

I have 68 active EDH decks, with more in progress. I don't consider this a problem. Do you?

Chalk me up for not liking squirrel cards, either. They're just... not funny. Cringeworthily unfunny.

Tourach's Canticle means Tourach is absolutely going to be a legend in the set. Probably garbage for EDH, but still, HYPE.

anyone who builds a standard archetype that's heavily played is a hack..give me a %$#% horsemanship edh deck or some other insane outside the box deck..

EDIT: I'm sarcastic since I've run a token solider deck, a relentless rat deck among other standard archetypes.
