Bonders' Enclave is a good comparison. I run that in a couple of decks, and am never excited about using it, but at least it's better than Arch of Orazca, which I tried out and gave up on (in most cases replacing it with Enclave).

The only place this might be actually *good* is something like Zirda, but in mono-white, mono-red or Boros decks, it might be acceptable.

Good call with Bonders' Enclave, I forgot that that was a card as I haven't seen one in person yet lol. I feel like we really need to see one more mana shaved off of the activated ability when it comes to commander before people would really start running to get them. Being that War Cabinet is new, I am sure we will see some of it but I agree that it probably won't make much for waves in the long run.

It feels way too much like they stapled a Jayemdae Tome onto a Wastes. Sure, its still a colorless land that enters untapped but that doesn't make me excited about paying that activated ability.

Man, I totally missed War Cabinet is a land, and just assumed it was a three mana rock. That bumps it up a few notches in my evaluation. I'm already running Arch of Orazca in a few of my slower one and two-color decks, and shaving two mana off the activation cost seems relevant. Slots for colorless utility lands are pretty competitive, but this seems like it will make the cut for a lot of decks - especially mono-white / mono-red.

Yes, because how dare us plebians who can't perform buyouts on a whim get interesting commanders?

I think its valid to have cheap cards be interesting too. I don't know that I would say it excuses wizards for making some cards a touch worse than necessary. Sengir, the Dark Baron for example could cost 2BB and it still probably wouldn't be considered to be a powerful partner.

I think its valid to have good cards at lower rarity but it feels bad to buy a pack and see under performing rares be what you get. I did not leak spoil this post as it pertains to officially spoiled cards.

Oh yeah, Sengir is a bit of a letdown. I thought you were complaining about Tormod. Though mediocre largish fliers are *surprisingly* strong in limited, if you've ever played limited. This would be where I used to say that not all booster sets should be designed for limited, but lately all the non-precons that weren't designed for limited have been nightmares.

It is kind of sad when legendary rares are tangibly worse than uncommons, but that says more about the frequency of dud rares than anything else. I like when knockout cards like Tatyova and Syr Konrad are printed at uncommon. I wish the new Baron was at least as good as Syr Konrad.

Partners don't have to suck on their own (Vial Smasher the Fierce and Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder say hi!), and when the partner in question is a long-awaited, new version of a major character, it should at least be able to hold its own as a card. Lore-wise, Baron Sengir is a character that old-school walkers like Urza have a hard time dealing with. I am glad the designers were somewhat careful with the partner mechanic for this product, and nobody who cares about the format wants a partner commander (or any commander, probably) that is anywhere close to Urza in power, but it would have been nice to have this version of the Baron be just a *little* more special than what he got. As is, he's an overcosted flying beater with a win-more added ability that doesn't seem that great a partner outside a limited/draft environment and that I'm not sure will make the cut in any but the most casual vampire tribal decks, given the competition at CMC 6. He would be so, so much better at CMC 4, or even 5, but 6?

The dumb idea was giving partner to Baron Sengir in the first place. Is like giving partner to Bolas or Yawgmoth. He doesn't want to team-up, he wants to lead you commander deck alone by tiranny and cruelty.

Yes. The Baron has minions, flunkies and thralls, not partners.

War Cabinet seems awesome with Zirda...

Could find a place in Phelddagrif, though I gotta admit 3 life does add up, especially for a deck looking to play the uber-long-game.

fair enough! I'm not sure the Baron needs some massive ability but it'd be nice to be able to regenerate him by taking counters off, or something.
Looking through the Commander 2016 spoiler is one of the premier unbalanced card experiences in M:TG, and Partner is totally blank in other casual formats so it makes me really dislike cards with the ability.

Oh, I totally agree that it is good to be careful with partners. I think they just were too careful with the Baron, who really isn't a great choice as a partner commander in the first place, as explained above.

As to what it would be good for the Baron to have, some sort of regeneration ability would be fine. More in flavor would be the ability to reanimate opponent's creatures or planeswalkers that die while he is in play, but that would almost certainly be too broken to include on a partner commander.

Is it just me or did the unofficial spoilers forum just up and vanish?

Edit: Never mind I just read the post on the previews page. Carry on good people.

This delves too much into speculation, but I think it will be a rabbit pulling a human out of a hat. Putting the magic in magician, something like that.

I'm also confused by the flavor of giving partner to the Baron. I thought he was a Big Bad.

So how are we all feeling about those Commander Legends precon options? Nice to see Tatyova got her much needed facelift right?

EDIT: Just realised they aren't on here yet, so here you go:
Boros

Wyleth, Soul of Steel (1RW)

Legendary Creature- Human Warrior

Trample

Whenever ~ attacks, draw a card for each aura and equipment attached to him.

2/2

"A warrior needs two things: a good sword and an iron will."

Providential Guard Rune (2W)

Enchantment- Aura

You may cast this spell as though it had flash if it targets a commander.

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature has indestructible.

"Behind each general leading his men to the front is a nervous mage with a spell already ready."

Glowing Solsteel(?) (1R)

Artifact- Equipment

Equipped creature gets +1/+0 for each opponent you have.

Whenever equipped creature is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to any target.

Equip (4)

"Wyleth emerged from the crater unscathed, the fury of the sun trapped in his hands."

https://preview.redd.it/cd3d5caoxju51.j ... 13ddd33388

Simic

Aesi 4GU

You can play an additional land during each of your turns

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card

5/5

Behemoth of the abyss 5UU

Return a land you control to its owner's hand: untap CARDNAME. he gains hexproof until end of turn.

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, target creature an opponent controls attacks during its controller's next combat phase if able.

Self-mutilating Hydra XGGG

When Self-mutilating Hydra enters the battlefield, distribute X + 1 / + 1 counters between it and any number of Commanders.

1/1

Wyleth is fine, but kinda boring. I get that card draw in boros is wanted, but the card isn't that interesting..
Providential guard rune is a card i like, the flash makes it a cool trick, it works well with wyleth so that's a plus for the precon.
Glowing Solsteel is a fun equipment, works nicely with cards that give deathtouch or even lifelink.

Aesi is just a better tatyova right? just give it the ability to drop an extra land for 1 more mana? I think Tatyova is to much value which in term allows for bad deckbuilding, so I think the same for Aesi, except that i'll target it even more.
Behemoth of the abbys is interesting, it's a hard to remove beater, also got nice land synergies. I like this card.
Self mutilating hydra is a 1/1 that pumps your commander? Am I missing something? This just seems like a bad card, a not instant speed Strength of the Tajuru which also gives you a 1/1?

The behemoth, the enchantment and the sword are cards i like, the rest would probably just gather dust in my collection.
EDH Decks:
Queen Marchesa
Chainer, Dementia Master
Will Kenrith
Bruna, the fading light

Almost no partners have good flavor. They put the mechanic were they need. it's 100% melvin and 0% vorthos. They kinda did the same originally by giving it to Ludevic.
I'm just hoping we'll not see Gix with partner.
