So I found out about a site called Urzas.ai that makes random cards. The results have been... humorous.

Finally had my flight test yesterday after a month of waiting for the weather to cooperate.

Spent most of the day before trying not to freak out, while assembling all the paperwork - I had to get background checks and driving history reports from NZ, UK, and US, make sure I had all the required hours, drive for hours to take an asinine test to prove I spoke English fluently when I have a degree in English, explain every wrong answer I got on all of the written tests, pass a medical, and a bunch of other stuff.

Felt confident on the academic stuff, after weeks of studying, and aside from 1 or 2 questions I was on my A game.

Got in the plane and my nerves made me miss some stupid stuff, but once we got going I stopped stressing and just flew the plane. I was nervous about the crosswind, but it ended up being pretty chill. Tons of people on the radio so it was constant effort to keep track of what was going on and to call my own position. Plus it was getting late in the day so the sun was blinding. At one point I got lost and the flight examiner had me circle in place while trying to figure out where I was on the map, while I panicked that I'd blown it.

When we got back to the circuit, the wind was calm, but I still managed to come in a bit too fast a couple of times. My final landing was strong, though, with a nice short roll. Once we hit the ground reality came back to me and my stress shot up as I tried to figure out if I'd passed or not. My examiner had the expression of someone just getting back from a long day at the coal mine.

Once inside, he went through the long list of everything I'd gotten wrong. At one or two points he said something that made me think he might pass me, but it was hard to feel confident about it. He still didn't show any emotion. Finally at the end he said "so that was basically a bog-standard flight test performance," then paused. "Congratulations, it's a pass."

@DirkGently that's awesome! So what to you do now? Do you like, rent a plane when you want? Can you fly to Australia?

We didn't cover that as part of the training, but from what I can tell I legally can but it might be a little bit of a headache. If I wanted to fly there regularly I can have my license recognized by OZ, there's some treaty in place to make that relatively easy, I don't think I need to pass any tests or anything. I think for US I would need to pass another flight test and probably do some studying on the differences in air law.

But yes, I can rent a plane (of the type I'm rated for, which is a tiny 2-seater with barely any room for luggage lol - I'll probably get at least one additional type rating to expand my options at some point) and take it for a fly. Gonna be doing a bunch of trips with Lily to boost up my solo hours. She's gonna freak out, I can't wait. As long as she doesn't stomp on the rudder pedals. That would be bad.

Lol, well I'm in NZ and not usually flying into controlled airspace (where virtually all your passenger jets will be spending all their time) so I think you're probably safe.

Thanks!

Damn, Goose. Sorry about your dog, losing animals always sucks.

Did you give him a viking funeral?

In a sense. Luckily, we have a 24 hour pet cremation service in our city, so we called them up and they had a van at our apartment in less than an hour. We pick him up in about a week in a nice urn with a paw print in clay and ink.

Nice. I live outside city limits, so whenever one of my animals dies, I build a big ass bonfire and send their ashes skyward. A proper funeral is the least anyone can give in exchange for a lifetime of loyal service.

I've made it abundantly clear to my friends in red states that we've got a room, a ride, and a shoulder. No questions. No judgment.

And this ruling isn't the end; it's a terrifying beginning.

This is a Magic forum, off-topic though it may be. I'm not going to say more. But I could.

Imagine not understanding middle school biology.
I'm not really sure what middle school biology has to do with anything. And frankly there's a lot of people citing a nebulous "basic biology" class on both sides of several arguments, none of which seem to relate to anything I remember learning in any biology class.

Ultimately the issue revolves around a philosophical question, not a biological one: at what point in a fetus's growth should it be considered a person, morally? If someone believes the answer is "at conception" - as much as I disagree with that perspective - then their political proscriptions do make sense from their point of view. And there's probably nothing that can be done to move them off that position because there's no objective truth to be cited. Most of the time their perspective is coming from a religious principle that can't be reasoned with anyway.

Granted, it's hard to avoid getting the impression that, for a lot of people, their underlying principle is less aligned with a genuine concern for the debatably-personed and more from a desire to punish anyone who does something they personally don't approve of. The fact that so many who oppose abortion also oppose birth control and support the death penalty is rather revealing.

Man I really hope this is neutrally-voiced enough to avoid a warn lmao.

The rest of my family lives in the US. I don't think it's very charitable to imply that I'm not invested in this. (There's also more nut jobs in NZ than you might imagine, fwiw, in no small part from political runoff from the US - there were multiple pro-Trump "stop the steal" marches past my old apartment in downtown Auckland)

I'm not at all equivocating both sides. I am strongly pro-choice. My point is that arguments attempting to leverage science aren't going to have much impact, because it's not a question that relates to science. I'd argue that the only way to win is to vote, but given how courts are appointed that's a long-haul strategy at best.

I share your frustration but I don't think lashing out is likely to be productive. I wish I knew what would be.

You have this backwards from a historical perspective. The framework of Roe was basically a rationalized recreation of traditional common law on the issue. The common law positions were themselves built on the theological idea of a moment of ensoulment, the point where the soul enters a fetus and changes it into a person. That is where the idea that abortion can be banned only after a certain amount of gestation comes from, the tradition was to be legal prior to "quickening". That idea of a moment of ensoulment was held by many Christian scholars, but the idea itself predates Christianity, going back at least to Aristotle. Debates today about about personhood are frequently the same as they were with Aristotle, just substituting less supernatural terms for ensoulment.

The idea that life begins immediately upon conception only really gained any popularity with the birth of modern medicine, and the movement to strictly regulate abortion in the first half of the 20th century was not lead by religion, but by medical doctors who were gaining increasing understanding that there isn't actually a period where a fetus is just an inanimate object waiting for a soul to wake it up. Science brought us to this point.

Any site that doesn't ban Legend for deliberately rubbing salt in wounds so consistently is happy with us all getting trolled, I'm out of here
Excuse me? From my perspective, Goose was the troll. Though to be perfectly honest, I thought Goose's post was funny even though I didn't agree with it. And try existing in a veritable echo chamber of political opinions largely contrary to your own, not to mention 50 YEARS of salt. So spare me. That being said, I apologize for posting a sarcastic meme about such a sensitive topic and at such a touchy time.

Goose's post reminded me of the distinction between being opposed to abortion and being opposed to a federal law that legalizes abortion. It's possible to support choice and the Constitution at the same time. It just has to be done at the state level. Overturning Roe was merely an act of constitutionality. I don't see a reason to get upset about that. The potential for it to save lives is just a happy coincidence from my point of view. I'm also extremely happy that federal politicians no longer have abortion as leverage.
