I mean that alter is done by the best alterist in the business Eric Klug so there is that.

The Secret of Commander (EDH)
Sheldon-"The secret of this format is in not breaking it. "
Well this set has been a sneaky snek and is slowly gaining my interest. I'm definitely going to build something, I just don't know what. Azban and Sultai are out because I've gone that route enough, so I'm torn between Surgeon General Commander gimmick mutate tribal and Jeskai - either Brallin, Skyshark Rider / Shabraz, the Skyshark wheels (which is probably what everyone else will do) or Vadrok, Apex of Thunder. Whatever I decide, I think I want to use as many cards from Ikoria and C20 as possible.

I didn't actually know that, but I mean my point still stands--I wish I could make alters look like this. I just need practice (obviously a crap ton of practice), but I'm currently working my way into an emotional state where I can be creative again.
You can also do that here! Just go to the explore header and click my collection!

I've nearly dug my way out of the Ikoria/C20 deckbuilding hole.
I wish more things in Ikoria appealed to me. Haldan, Avid Arcanist and Pako, Arcane Retriever turned out to be a lot of fun. Someone in my group build a Jirina Kudro list that is surprisingly solid. None of the other legends really jump out at me, though.
I've built four decks so far purely out of cute factor. And I'm trying to find a way to make Kaheera, the Orphanguard work as a general, rather than in the 99 of Arahbo, Roar of the World . I'd be a liar if I didn't say that their abilities came second, although Tayam, Luminous Enigma could potentially be a contender for my next favorite deck. It's got a very Marath, Will of the Wild synergistic feel to it.ZenN wrote: ↑4 years agoI wish more things in Ikoria appealed to me. There's so much crazy in this set, I love it! There are actually a lot of cards that I want, and that makes me super happy. There's even a few terrible deck ideas that I want to build, and I love it.
Chief among them now, is that I am actually wanting to build Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer, in order to take advantage of Mutate shananigans. It's a reason to run mutate cards, and not even care what their abilities are.
The idea is simple: mutate a non-legendary creature on top of Brudiclad. Cast something like Cackling Counterpart onto Brudiclad to get a non-legendary token with Brudiclad's ability. Make all of your tokens into non-legendary Brudiclads. Cast Seize the Day to get extra combats, and exponentially more Brudiclads.
Would this be easier with Helm of the Host? Yes. Do I care? No. No I do not. Not one bit. I wish to use Mutate to make me be able to get multiple copies of my Commander out because I made it non-legendary and cloneable.
I'm seeking other commanders that this would be fun with. Blue is easiest to make cloned copies, but artifact commanders can use Sculpting Steel, and there are a few tricks in red to get there as well. Animar, Soul of Elements could be fun to run a pile of jank mutate with and clones. Just have piles of ever growing Animars. Then populate them with Selesnya Eulogist. Because why not?

Alright, time to find the jank combo. If we mutate onto a creature, then clone it, then bounce the original, we can mutate onto the clone for double mutate triggers. Then we clone the new stack with another clone, bounce the first clone, and re-mutate onto the increasingly mutant creature. I just need an appropriately repeatable bounce and a lot of mana... unfortunately, none of the mutates seem to natively help with either of those goals, so this is gonna be a tough nut to crack, but I'm not dissuaded.
Zedruu: "This deck is not only able to go crazy - it also needs to do so."
Cubwarden makes tokens on mutate, as does Trumpeting Gnarr (depends on if you need one or two). Lore Drakkis returns and instant or sorcery card, or Vadrok, Apex of Thunder casts a noncreature card from the yard with cmc 3 or less without exiling it.tstorm823 wrote: ↑4 years agoAlright, time to find the jank combo. So you could use Cackling Counterpart, Quasiduplicate, Heat Shimmer, or Twinflame to make the token copy (as some options that are 3 cmc or less) and use Cloudstone Curio to do the bouncing.
Chainer
(rebuild after Geth)
Yeah, I was going to say Cloudstone Curio and Lore Drakkis works out. Use Cackling Counterpart to copy the mutated creature, Curio bounces the original mutated creature, then mutate Drakkis back onto the original (if you don't have anything else with mutate).lyonhaert wrote: ↑4 years agoCubwarden makes tokens on mutate, as does Trumpeting Gnarr (depends on if you need one or two). And then you just need a way to repay for the mutate each time. With the Drakkis, it could just be Turnabout. Or the creature originally mutated onto could somehow make the mana by entering.lyonhaert wrote: ↑4 years agoSo you could use Cackling Counterpart, Quasiduplicate, Heat Shimmer, or Twinflame to make the token copy (as some options that are 3 cmc or less) and use Cloudstone Curio to do the bouncing.
The issue with this I think is that Lore Drakkis doesn't scale up infinitely. You can't target the same instant or sorcery more than once, so having a billion triggers isn't much cooler than like 3 triggers.

Hiya, I'm cjsaul0309 or Callum. I've been plying MTG for about a year and half there or abouts and have been playing commander for most of it I tend to build new decks out of habit on cockatrice and then get them IRL I do like putting good cards into my decks but I try not to build competitively but I have been known to realise that my decks can sometimes do broken things. I'm quite new to forums as a whole so It's a bit of a learning curve but being able to discuss commander and interactions is something I enjoy doing so I thought I'd try it out
Omnath, Locus of Mana
Karametra, God of Harvests, Thromok the Insatiable
Sen Triplets, Samut, Voice of Dissent, Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale, Zaxara, the Exemplary

No, it wouldn't be very useful to keep mutating only Lore Drakkis. I was just meaning that if you had nothing else to mutate you only technically need Lore Drakkis to make a creature with some ridiculous number of mutate abilities.tstorm823 wrote: ↑4 years agoThe issue with this I think is that Lore Drakkis doesn't scale up infinitely. Also, certainly somebody else has noticed this so I'm probably stupid for only just realizing it...but Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker with a creature mutated on top of it makes itself non-legendary. So you now suddenly have infinite creatures, right? I mean, you'd need to untap everything or have some other ETB effect triggering...

Yeah, any non-legendary mutate creature + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker plus anything like Purphoros, God of the Forge; Impact Tremors; Altar of the Brood; or Corpse Knight gives a win. I'm not entirely sure how useful that is, though.Segrus wrote: ↑4 years agoAlso, certainly somebody else has noticed this so I'm probably stupid for only just realizing it...but Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker with a creature mutated on top of it makes itself non-legendary. Yeah, maybe not super useful generally speaking, but there might be some applications depending on the creature you use to mutate. Majestic Auricorn gives you infinite life; Mindleecher exiles all your opponents' decks; Auspicious Starrix puts your whole library into play (essentially); Insatiable Hemophage does what I was originally talking about except without a third card.ZenN wrote: ↑4 years agoYeah, any non-legendary mutate creature + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker plus anything like Purphoros, God of the Forge; Impact Tremors; Altar of the Brood; or Corpse Knight gives a win. Those things only trigger on mutate, though. The copies Kiki makes will be entering the battlefield, not mutating.Segrus wrote: ↑4 years agoYeah, maybe not super useful generally speaking, but there might be some applications depending on the creature you use to mutate. You're right. I want to go back in time when I didn't say something stupid. lolZenN wrote: ↑4 years agoThose things only trigger on mutate, though.
