I really like Lynde. Flavor, build around, interesting gameplay. She has everything a commander should have.
Another day, another bunch of spoilers... We're up to 17 legendary creatures, which feels... extremely high. Less than Kaldheim and Strixhaven, I guess, but that's around triple the density of original Innistrad (and double the density for Shadows Over Innistrad / Eldritch Moon).
- Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor looks like a solid enabler, and somewhat annoying to play against - most decks don't have that much enchantment removal, so recurring curses is pretty tricky to deal with. Still, if you want to build a curse deck, she seems like a good choice.
- Jerren, Corrupted Bishop is fine. Combos with Moonmist, but otherwise I suspect the flip side will usually be flavor text outside dedicated decks (although getting to exactly 13 off Necropotence isn't difficult). Ormendahl is obviously absurd if you can get him though - 6/6 for 3 mana with a ton of relevant text. Front side is a bit weaker than Xathrid Necromancer, but you do get a token up front. Hmmmm....
- Fateful Absence looks like a reasonable addition to white's removal suite.
- Tovolar's Huntsmaster does a very solid Grave Titan impression. The fight ability can be pretty strong if supported properly.
- Hallowed Respite is an interesting upgrade to Momentary Blink. Doesn't hit legendary creatures, so you can't use it to save your commander (or reclaim it if it is stolen), but hitting opponents' creatures and tapping them down is some nice flexibility.
- The Meathook Massacre looks like a fun mix of board wipe and Blood Artist. I appreciate the symmetry with Suture Priest. is a pretty steep cost to kill things though.
- Florian, Voldaren Scion is fine but bland. 'Do thing, draw a card', with a bunch of card selection replacing the ability to draw multiple cards.
- Dennick, Pious Apprentice // Dennick, Pious Apparition is interesting. The grave hate / protection on the front side doesn't excite me, but investigating when creatures die / are milled / etc is nice.
- Firmament Sage is mildly interesting as a draw engine, assuming you can flip day and night frequently enough.
Bereaved Survivor actually seems like a decent mini Alesha, Who Smiles at Death . Mostly I like the flavor, has that DC super hero backstory feel to it!

I figured out how to break Solgurk, the Overslime - same way you break everything else, Mind Over Matter. Infinite mana with any land that taps for multiple mana (karoo, or any mana-producing enchantment), then any cycling land gives you infinite draw.
Probably fun as a more value-oriented engine though.
Ormendahl isn't 3 mana, he's 9. What a piece of trash tbh (front side is fine but kinda boring imo).

Lynde gets absolutely bodied by Hour of Revelation or other wipes that kill enchantments and creatures simultaneously. The recursion is not optional…Mookie wrote: ↑2 years agoLynde, Cheerful Tormentor looks like a solid enabler, and somewhat annoying to play against - most decks don't have that much enchantment removal, so recurring curses is pretty tricky to deal with. I like Otherworldly Gaze. You do not get a card like Ransack the Lab or Strategic Planning, but the instant speed makes it a nice EOT trick.
EDIT: Also, Lynde is a trap. The best curses are in white!

Yeah, the more I look at Lynde, the more I am unsure what to do with her...
- Lynde has to be alive for any of her abilities to trigger, so you'll need to invest significantly in keeping her on the board and cram your deck with every counterspell and hexproof/indestructible-granting equip you can find.
- The Curse plan generally, and a few curses like Curse of Thirst explicitly, want you to stack them all on one target, which is fun with Lynde...until that opponent dies, and then all the curses land on you and she only gets to ship one/turn away.
- You can dodge that by spreading out your curses and just not running the ones that count them up. But then as Dirk pointed out, Lynde also gets absolutely wrecked by multi-permanent wipes like Hour of Revelation or Akroma's Vengeance or Austere Command. Her ability will trigger and you will be forced to put all those curses on yourself...but then she's going to go to your Command Zone/Graveyard, unable to shuffle the worst of them off of you.
- And lets not forget that for every very reasonable/strong curse in these colors (Cruel Reality, Curse of Opulence, Curse of Echoes) we have two more that are hard garbage (Curse of the Nightly Hunt, Curse of Oblivion, Torment of Scarabs.
- Many more curses also rely on rumbling in combat (Curse of Stalked Prey, etc) , something Lynde isn't super interested in doing and that will be hard to support in the deck.
So if we just jam all the curses - I think that deck feels like a cludgy mess and a trap that won't play very well .
A few alternatives:
- You could play cheap curses on yourself, shuffle them around to draw cards, then sacrifice them with something like Claws of Gix to draw more cards and keep spreading the love. This could play nice with Constellation cards.
- Perhaps related to the above, you could make yourself a tempting target with Curse of Opulence or such, then try to "get 'em" with stuff like Hellish Rebuke? Seems too cute/dumb to be good.

Cathar Commando is the exact kind of card white's been needing to help compete with green's disenchant suite for so long, all the way back to the printing of Reclamation Sage. It can be played proactively like my pet card Wickerbough Elder, it can also be flashed in for potential blowouts/leaving up other interaction, and while it can't be flickered, it does work with some of white creature recursion stuff and pairs well with Lurrus, of the Dream-Den, and even in flicker decks, it's a great hedge against Torpor Orb. This is a staple in creature-centric white decks going forward, and it's a common to boot. I hope we see more cards like this for white.

Another spicy card, red got an Archaeomancer in Ardent Elementalist.
Am I crazy or does the floor seem really high in this set? Very few cards I'm comfortable calling a D or worse in limited.

I feel the same way Dirk - limited looks pretty spicy for this format. Looks like after several sets of "the bombs are too swingy", we're getting a set with more seriously competitive, useful stuff at Common and Uncommon. For instance, the uncommon flashback signposts are all almost universally stronger than the rares imo.

Yeah, lots of nice stuff in the set, even at common and uncommon. A lot of my decks have heavy graveyard themes, so I'm very satisfied with the set.
- Cathar Commando isn't quite as good as Reclamation Sage - you can't flicker it, and it doesn't leave a body around for later value - but flash is a very strong addition, making it a meaningful sidegrade.
- Lunarch Veteran is mildly interesting as a Soul Warden variant that you can bring back after it dies.
- Search Party Captain is potentially a 1 mana 2/2 that draws a card on ETB.
- No Way Out is a better Mind Rot.... which is pretty necessary, given that it is rotating out for the first time in 20 years.
- Rotten Reunion is a nice piece of grave hate // token production.
- Ardent Elementalist is Archaeomancer in red. I guess Anarchist exists, but the extra mana reduction is always nice.
- Electric Revelation gives me Faithless Looting vibes with its flashback.

I wrote a big long thing about upgrades to Sevinne in this set and then they had to save Electric Revelation for the dump day. While it's no Faithless Looting or Faithful Mending the deck probably still does want it. Honestly I'm also game to consider paying one more over Thrill of Possibility in a lot of decks for the chance to flash it back later. "Bad instant speed looting" is probably still quite good in most non-blue decks.

I would think it would be really strong in sevinne since you only discard once, ends up at +3 cards when you flash it back, whereas faithless looting/mending are both CA-neutral. Or is it better to discard more to get stuff in the grave for Sevinne? Being an instant is a big up compared to looting, though, especially with Sevinne triggering once per turn.Hawk wrote: ↑2 years agoI wrote a big long thing about upgrades to Sevinne in this set and then they had to save Electric Revelation for the dump day. Sevinne's probably a pretty interesting build post-innistrad. I might finally have to get around to that.

thinking about the new legends:
Adeline, Resplendent Cathar - "human knight" would never play a card of this description no matter what it did, easily my least fave archetype
Lier, Disciple of the Drowned - seems to be too time-walky to have fun playing against? double every pseudo Upheaval/Evacuation etc seems very taxing on yr opponent's attempts to have fun, if yr group goes for power then Lier'll be intolerable. seems like you could insert her into the Bruvac deck and make Fractured Sanity win the game immediately too
Gisa, Glorious Resurrector - so nice. so many decks are mana elf tribal that you can just play Drown in Sorrow and gain control of their entire board position without caring about their newfound fragility. seems less annoying than Tergrid too, more the sort of thing I'd want to be in a meta to make it more about non-utility creatures
Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia - dunno. I would wanna make Aphemia before Jadar i think
Jerren, Corrupted Bishop // Ormendahl, the Corrupter - really interesting and pointed at being a particular deck type but maybe it's gonna be that stupid Shadowborn Apostle deck again lol
Saryth, the Viper's Fang - I love her. needed a snake tribal trinket line I think, her art involves 'em so heavily. can't be bothered buying cards anymore but she'd be my choice to lead a deck if I did; so open-ended, at least at lower power levels she makes you a really fearsome presence at teh table, plus deathtouch on creature tokens tends to round up to unblockability. imo it'd be nice to go through the collection and find creatures with abilities that don't involve tapping then hide them behind Saryth.
Dennick, Pious Apprentice // Dennick, Pious Apparition - something about the transformed side of this card begs me not to read it lol, cannot think about him whatsoever. generally I think the cutesy near-identical names on these disturb cards makes them worse
Florian, Voldaren Scion - really pushed for Standard, that first strike is so efficient. makes me think of GRN block Spectacle in general. cries out to be a low cmc deck, maybe you could make a horrible minizombie deck with Loyal Subordinate and Plague Belcher and Shepherd of Rot, or a Haunting Misery deck? I like him and those low CMC decks tend to die to Deed or to big hexproofed lifelinkers which is exactly how my interests look anyway lol
Katilda, Dawnhart Prime - "what if Rishkar was too good?" no thanks
Liesa, Forgotten Archangel - she rules, i'm sure there's reason to play a bunch of zero-drops and Blood Pets/Overeager Apprentices and make something happen. also from some angles she looks like a fixed Enduring Renewal and isn't illustrated by that sketchy dude, instant positive
Ludevic, Necrogenius // Olag, Ludevic's Hubris - just seems really good if yr playing a control-oriented blue black stall that can resurrect Cephalid Constable? so mana hungry, I probably wouldn't wanna play that strategy with an essentially useless commander that you'll probably only activate once all game
Old Stickfingers - stared at this for a while thinking it'd work for Colfenor, the Last Yew, and making that deck function properly is a noble cause. my approach was to quickly self-mill and locate Llanowar Druid and then become a bad person. Stickfingers could help?????? has the old-school Lhurgoyf pow/tough text which means it's really hard to fetch back with Colfenor, though, you want stuff with the Fiend Artisan version!
Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer - "Human Knight" didn't read
Sigarda, Champion of Light - pushed for standard, less interesting than Sigarda #2 and less powerful than Sigarda #1, don't like
Slogurk, the Overslime - this is not a creature, but an engine. You can't trick me by giving it a power and toughness lol. lands are too powerful so this is too powerful.
Tovolar, Dire Overlord // Tovolar, the Midnight Scourge - hope he becomes a good aggro deck, I like the attempt and he's stuffed with abilities
Vadrik, Astral Archmage - i can't deal with the ungainliness of the "whenever day becomes night or night becomes day" text, this is worse than my own custom cards by miles
Saryth and Florian fire my imagination

Stolen Vitality's art is among the creepier I've seen recently. Not that it's too extreme, but definitely not a fan.
The best curse are n Red and Black, Followed by white with Green and Blue pulling up the rear. Qquestio is, do yo wn better curse, or emore control to cast the red and black curses?Serenade wrote: ↑2 years agoI like Otherworldly Gaze. You do not get a card like Ransack the Lab or Strategic Planning, but the instant speed makes it a nice EOT trick.
EDIT: Also, Lynde is a trap. The best curses are in white!

Electric Revelation will likely get a spot in Kalamax, the Stormsire along side Thrill of Possibility. I expect to net 3 cards off both castings, which should make it very good in the draw spot.
I'm also looking at Memory Deluge as a Foresee at instant speed with flashback. Upon reading it further, I don't think the copies will net any cards since mana wasn't spent to cast the copy. I won't look at any cards and cannot put any to hand. Looks like Electric Revelation gets that spot since I have been really impressed with Thrill of possibility in Kalamax, the Stormsire [/card]. The flashback cost is also extremely reasonable. It does a good Chemister's Insight impression, which has been on my watch list for some time.
