As for the "once a turn" valve, I appreciate the use of it for limiting power of designs. I find it a bit clunky, as it reminds me of the guy in my group who busts out
Marchesa, sets up a sac loop, and only does it in his turn because yes, but I can nevertheless respect the design goal. However, its earliest emergence has been on white catch-up cards, a place I feel it has no reason being. Part of
Smothering Tithe's appeal is that when a foe goes nuclear and draws 50 cards, you get reimbursed for it and rubber-banded into some level of relevance. Meanwhile as I tested
Mangara, the Diplomat, an opponent chained together some draw spells, a tutor and a wipe, and all I got for it was a solitary card draw (a basic Plains, to add insult to injury
). Recent cards like
Esper Sentinel and
Monologue Tax continue leaning into this angle, and this is deliberate
as per MaRo.
