Yall, I'm not gonna scroll back to see for sure, but in case no one has brought it up before now, we need to talk about that Faithless Looting art, because good grief. I honestly thought it was a %$#% meme at first.
Well at first I was like wtf is going on here? But I looked up the artist Carly Mazur and she is really good and has a style of combining quite realistic with abstract.
I think the Faithless Looting art didn't succeed, but I've actually warmed to it as I can see the sort of style she aimed for.

Also I'm a little pissed that Divine Gambit is a special printing. Its a pretty terrible card abd I think I'd be a little bummed to have that crop up in a pack.
There is an easy solution to that.... Don't buy packs ;)

But seriously...... packs are a trap. Buy the singles you want.
Completely my intent. I just think its a bad card and sticking it in alternate art as a deluxe piece does nothing to change that. 100% would prefer to see Path to Exile or...anything else tbh.
Given the way these are set up, it's not competing for a slot with path. Path would be a Rare, just like the other uncommons outside standard. Gambit is an uncommon, which is all standard legal commons and uncommons. Is there another white uncommon spell in standard you'd rate over it?

After seeing 2 RW legends spoiled so far, I gotta say that I can see WotC trying real hard to make RW cool, and I appreciate the effort. Both (all three?) designs look really sweet to me. Plargg, Dean of Chaos is legit - Chaos Wand-esque effect in the cz is super fun, and PS thank god for whoever said "hey, maybe we should have a cmc restriction on that ability"

Those don't look like magic cards!

...they look way better than magic cards tbh.

Only bummer is that people are going to pimp out their decks with these and then go "wait, what was the fourth mode on Primal Command?"

Those look really cool. I hope they won't cost a fortune ... I would avoid any card that I'm not used to or that contains too much text though, it's really bothersome to not understand what is written on your own card (maybe AlterSleeves will do English versions compatible with those?). :P

Yeah. Japanese variant Mind's Desire is a pretty piece of cardboard that I can never play with because almost everyone knows what Mind's Desire does in the most general sense of casting storm random cards, but few remember precisely how it does that.

I'm with you on this one and I will definitely being picking one or two up. I added Looting to Kykar so this will be the version I use. Though, to be fair, I am a sucker for "special" printings :)

It is actually kind of nice to see them allow for some different art directions. I admit this may not have landed quite as well as Wizards or the perhaps the artist maybe would have liked but for all the complaints about the art being fairly homogenous lately, with artists like Seb McKinnon standing out for being different or having a different tone, I think the idea is a good one even if perhaps the execution (in this case) might be slightly off the mark. I wouldn't mind seeing more of this style though and will likely pick up the artist's Harmonize in this set too, though I don't really run it in anything right now.

Elite Spellbinder is an interesting card to show up in white. More relevant for other formats, but white hasn't had many hand-attack spells in the past, and making an opponent pay two extra mana to cast a wrath (or whatever) is a solid tempo play. That said, it definitely feels like it's in white's color pie - a mix of Thoughtseize and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

....but much more importantly, it make Bragos Processors better! Most Oblivion Ring effects only hit permanents, with Spell Queller being a rare exception. Being able to process your opponents' hands seems quite strong. Also unlike most Oblivion Ring effects, the card is exiled even after Elite Spellbinder dies, which is quite nice (and flicker-friendly). I could also see it being combo'd with Drannith Magistrate, which is amusing.

edit:

Rip Apart and Venerable Warsinger also look quite solid. The former is a flexible removal spell - probably outclassed by Wear // Tear, but Lightning Bolt // Disenchant is still a bunch of flexibility if you anticipate not having an artifact / enchantment to kill (which is certainly the case in other formats).

Meanwhile, Venerable Warsinger does a passable Sun Titan impression - by default, it reanimates a 3-drop on combat damage, but if you have a way to pump it then you get some very solid reanimation. Also gets better if you have access to haste. I could definitely see it showing up in decks.

....I want all of these for my cube.

Elite Spellbinder
Limited player "A 3/1 flyer for 3 mana, great first pick."
Standard player "Provides enough tempo to win tight games."
Modern "I'll try one in the sideboard for my Humans deck."
Commander player "It does what now? That's pretty crap."

Rip Apart would be incredible if it was an instant. As a sorcery....meh. Might see play elsewhere though.

I think Rip Apart still has a place in Boros though, even at sorcery speed. Hitting four permanent types at cmc 2 makes it relevant at all points of the game, and Boros does not have as much flexible removal as some other color combinations (although it has a lot of efficient targeted effects). I think you can consider playing this alongside or over Disenchant or Unexpectedly Absent for example, dependent on the rest of your removal suite. And in decks without enchantment synergy I think this can be a useful upgrade over something like Banishing Light.

I'd probably still run Generous Gift, Chaos Warp and even Oblation before Rip Apart. Looking at Abrade, I think they could have make it cost 1WR and be instant.

I would never consider playing banishing light outside of enchantment synergy though.

I think unexpectedly absent is much better personally, especially in this modern combo hellscape we live in. Instant speed is such a huge advantage imo.

It's not a terrible card but I can pretty much guarantee it'll be one that sits in my box forever because I just rarely want the 11th best targeted removal spell in Boros.

Lorehold Excavation and Reconstruct History. I can see Boros going full self-mill in order to benefit more from their new "drawing" engine in the future.

Also, Velomachus Lorehold is really great! 2/2 for the dragons so far, I am hyped for the remaining three!

So an interesting design quirk of abilities like Magecraft is that they make the design team have to be more careful about making things instants. It's one thing when your Spirit Summoning pumps your Lorehold Pledgemage pre-combat, it's a very different thing when it also doubles as a combat trick. We'll definitely still see instants, especially at higher rarities, but they have to be extra careful about what instants they put out, as each one theoretically doubles as a combat trick in a set loaded with Magecraft.

A bunch of sweet Lorehold cards. I'm a fan of recursion and graveyard synergies, and this set looks to be adding a lot of depth to the color pair.
  • Strict Proctor is Torpor Orb on a body, but also hits other permanent types. Have we had a way to stop landfall triggers in the past?
  • Efreet Flamepainter is the most efficient way to cheat out an instant / sorcery that I can think of.
  • Reconstruct History is... a lot of value. It's difficult to get the full 5-for-1, but this looks excellent even if you only get back three cards. There are a few ways in red/white to recur instants/sorceries, but not a ton.
  • Velomachus Lorehold is... interesting. Still, seems sweet - a voltron / spellslinger red/white commander. Seven mana is a lot, but looks like it will generate a ton of value.
  • Quintorious, Field Historian is also interesting. Not sure what the best direction for him would be - could just run a bunch of recursion, but four horsemen would also be hilarious. Seems pretty niche otherwise though.
  • Radiant Scrollwielder is more recursion, and does a passable Firesong and Sunspeaker impression.
  • Reduce to Memory is an excellent removal spell. Sorcery speed and doesn't hit lands, but exile is good. Being a lesson makes it extremely relevant for other formats.

Great day for Boros, eh?

Reconstruct History is a potential "Draw 5" for four, which is CRAZY value in the colors who normally don't get value. I've unironically maybeboarded Restock in a few decks. It usually misses the cut because Green can do better (Wildest Dreams is near-strictly better, for instance), but in Boros decks this is pretty unprecedented. This is good with only two hits which is good because it'll be hard to reliably engineer more, and if you can hit 3+ this card is gold. I'll also be curious to see if there's enough Boros self-mill beyond just Lorehold Excavation to make this a real archetype. All the rummaging from Plargg, Dean of Chaos, Thrilling Discovery, and Illuminate History will certainly help.

Radiant Scrollwielder and Venerable Warsinger are also really cool recursion cards, and adding in Quintorious, Field Historian and Stonebound Mentor as extra rewards for moving stuff out of your 'yard is just really fun and gets my brewing engine running.

The hard part for now is who commands this deck. Quintorius feels a bit ponderous. Hofri Ghostforge is very powerful, but doesn't directly do all we're looking for. Velomachus Lorehold is neat but actually a bombo with the primary graveyard manipulation strategy. I'm currently leaning Osgir, the Reconstructor even though he's heavy on the artifact plan (Auriok Salvagers.dec is a go!) but I'm sorta hoping we see one more legendary creature who plays well in this space and is a bit lighter on the CMC.

I'm less high on Reduce to Memory and Rip Apart after a night to sleep on them; not being instants is a bummer both for flexibility and Sunforger reasons. I appreciate them and can see budget or pure Boros decks running them, but I don't think they break into the system when Chaos Warp, Generous Gift, Oblation, Unexpectedly Absent and Abrade exist (alongside the staple white creature-only removal and numerous disenchant-style effects) as the core of a removal engine in the colors. Rip Apart is the closest, for being a mini-vindicate; a Reconstruct History-type deck may want it just to have a sorcery removal spell?

I always liked Heartwarming Redemption and Leave // Chance and appreciate that they play with these mechanics.

After we get all of the Lorehold cards, I need to dig back into a cycling Zirda, the Dawnwaker deck...that now can return the cycled cards back to hand for value. (Cycle Cast Out now, use later!)

Good to see WotC finally recognizing white being the protective color against popular EDH cards.
