February MCC Round 2: This One Time...

Welcome to the February MCC! We've now gotten started exploring the flavor and mechanics of the set with Kaldheim Month here at the MCC, and you've made it to Round 2, so give yourself a pat on the back and get ready to boast about it!

Main Challenge: Design a legendary creature card with a boast ability.
Subchallenge 1: Your card is the main creature type for the realm used on your Round 1 card.
Subchallenge 2: Your card has the word "permanent" (or "permanents") in its rules text.

DEADLINES

Design deadline: Sunday, February 21st 23:59 EDT

Judging deadline: Wednesday, February 24th 23:59 EDT

Clarifications

Main Challenge: Your card must have at least one boast ability, and that ability must work within the existing rules for boast (although you can have other abilities like Birgi's that mess with those rules).

Subchallenge 1:

The Ten Realms can be found listed in various places (here and here, for example) but here are the main creature types for each one:

Istfell - WU spirits
Karfell - UB zombies
Immersturm - BR demons
Gnottvold - RG trolls
Bretagard - all five colors, but centered in GW, humans
Starnheim - WB angels
Skemfar - BG elves
Littjara - GU shapeshifters
Surtland - UR giants
Axgard - RW dwarves

(The colors are provided for reference, but there is no requirement in the subchallenge to adhere to those colors.)

(X/3) Elegance - Is the card easily understandable at a glance? Do all the flavor and mechanics combined as a whole make sense?

Development
(X/3) Viability - How well does the card fit into the color wheel? Does it break or bend the rules of the game? Is it the appropriate rarity?
(X/3) Balance - Does the card have a power level appropriate for contemporary constructed/limited environments without breaking them? Does it play well in casual and multiplayer formats? Does it create or fit into a deck/archetype? Does it create an oppressive environment?

Creativity
(X/3) Uniqueness - Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel "fresh"?
(X/3) Flavor - Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?

Polish
(X/3) Quality - Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating.
(X/2) Main Challenge (*) - Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge?

Most important consideration of all this round: Was the flavor text a boast?
Venedrex
Show
Hide
Design
(3/3) Appeal - Txmmy obviously likes a Giant that throws Fireballs. Jxnny is interested in the Dragonkin Berserker interaction. Spike likes the sheer utility of an X-burn spell every turn particularly for Limited.
(2.5/3) Elegance - The exile clause is a bit wordy.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Color and rarity exactly what they need to be.
(3/3) Balance - No complaints - the boast ability here is certainly strong and the body is more than alright, but having only 3 toughness is helpful.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - As hoary as the Fireball effect is, the fact of the matter is there's no X cost among the existing boasters.
(2.5/3) Flavor - Name is a bit generic - hard to be impressed by "the" Lavamancer when some already exist - but flavor text is exactly what it needed to be.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality - Reminder text needs italics.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - Primarily a Jxnny card. Txmmy likes pure destruction but would rather play Krond, the Dawn-Clad. Spike likes the flexibility against problem permanents but would probably think the destruction boast is too expensive compared to simpler options like Trygon Predator.
(2.5/3) Elegance - Losing all abilities is always a bit tetchy.

Development
(1/3) Viability - So here's where the hammer of what I like to call the Twisted Reflection principle comes down hard. Can blue turn things into enchantments temporarily? Yeah, most likely, given One with the Stars. Can green destroy noncreature nonland permanents? Yes, 100%, and there's a ton of precedent. But can GU destroy any permanent, including creatures and lands? Absolutely not.
(3/3) Balance - Yes this is a Desert Twister engine but at least the boast abilities are relatively expensive.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness - Doesn't break particularly new ground but two boasts, and the enchantmentizing ability, are both interesting.
(3/3) Flavor - This actually works very well. The boast in the flavor text is great for the character.

Polish
(2/3) Quality - Various Guildmage cycles have proven that if multiple activated abilities have different monocolored activation costs, they go in mana cost order, so the 3G should be on top. Also, two periods at the end of the flavor text.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

Design
(2/3) Appeal - Full points from Jxnny and half each from Txmmy and Spike - Txmmy doesn't like the smallness and vulnerability of the body but does like the extra combats and Spike doesn't like the sheer expensiveness manawise but is attracted to the versatility and finisher potential.
(1/3) Elegance - Four abilities here. Both the boast abilities here are pretty wordy and the card as a whole works in a fairly complex way.

Development
(2/3) Viability - Mostly red but the temp-reanimation is questionable. This feels like it COULD be mythic but it's borderline and I might put it at rare.
(2/3) Balance - I feel like some things could have been pushed and tweaked on this card given its rarity because it feels sort of swingy - either it takes over the game or it dies right away to a Shock.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness - Plenty of unique aspects here. Ultimately it's somewhat similar to Hellkite Charger and its ilk.
(3/3) Flavor - Name and flavor text work.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks good.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

Design
(2/3) Appeal - Primarily a Jxnny card with half points from the other psychographics, who don't want to risk giving their opponents any kind of advantage.
(2.5/3) Elegance - It's all a bit wordy and has a bit of tracking, but nothing incomprehensible.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Sure, this is definitely a black rare.
(3/3) Balance - A bit fiddly and risky if anything. Probably best used as a combo piece. Part of me wishes it created a Treasure for you AND for the opponent who attacked you.

Creativity
(3/3) Uniqueness - A bunch of interesting features here.
(1.5/3) Flavor - No boasting flavor text, and an actuary seems out of place on Kaldheim (although I guess there would be one in Narfi's court if anywhere on the plane). Actually, it seems off for an Advisor to boast.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality - Not wrong per se but token permanents is redundant. It would just say "tokens" on a real card.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(1.5/2) Subchallenges - Half points on the "permanent" reference subchallenge for the reason stated in Quality.

Total: 20/25

Design
(2.5/3) Appeal - Primarily a Txmmy/Spike card, particularly for EDH. Jxnny would at least CONSIDER an Enchanted Evening combo.
(3/3) Elegance - Not hard to understand.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Color and rarity correct.
(3/3) Balance - No objections I think. A pretty good red enchantment hoser that does not overstep its color pie bounds in the least (and is actually pretty conservative in that regard).

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - No particularly new ground broken here. The choice is kind of interesting but will (generally) only be whichever is the higher number. However, in a multiplayer context it's worthwhile to consider who you want to burn the most...
(3/3) Flavor - Adore the flavor text. Wish the name was a bit more distinctive but the flavor text makes up for it.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks good.

Grima, Masked Covewalker 1UU
Legendary Creature — Shapeshifter (R)
Changeling (This card is every creature type.)
Boast — 3UU: Grima, Masked Covewalker becomes a copy of another target nonland permanent you control until end of turn, except it's not legendary and it has this ability. (Activate this ability only if this creature attacked this turn and only once each turn.)
The truth can be rarely seen with your eyes.
1/4
Design
(2/3) Appeal — Johnny definitely likes cards that can become other cards – lots of fun tricks to be played there. Spike is interested in the wide variety of targets that this can have, but pretty offended by the high boast cost and very worried about the possibility of getting blown out by removal of either target. Timmy likes the idea of attacking with this and copying another beater, but is disappointed that the effect wears off at end of turn.
(2/3) Elegance — Several confusing things here: first, the fact that it bothers to keep the boast ability (but not changeling) even though the boast ability can't be activated again is weird – the transformation will wear off at end of turn so why keep the boast other than for extremely niche Birgi, God of Storytelling interactions? Second, the fact that it is allowed to copy planeswalkers will cause some feel-bad moments – Magic Mirror explicitly excludes that because it would cause immediate death when it becomes a walker with no loyalty counters. Third (though I'm not deducting for this one) it's a bit weird that it has to attack to make the transformation when it could then become a noncreature permanent, although I guess that does mean that it becomes tapped so it's not totally meaningless.

Development
(3/3) Viability — Yeah, this works on all counts. Funnily enough, neither of the two most similar cards, Mirage Mirror and Tilonalli's Skinshifter, are blue (though they are both rare), but it's pretty obvious that blue gets to do this.
(1.5/3) Balance — Pretty weak. Mirage Mirror gets to do this much cheaper, and is less vulnerable to removal on opponent's turns (and doesn't get blown out if your opponent removes the target). Tilonalli's Skinshifter gets to do it for free, even if it's much more restricted. The only advantage this has is its 1/4 body, but that is not worth much if you have to attack with it to be able to take advantage of its ability, since then it's not going to be back to block.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness — Pretty similar to Tilonalli's Skinshifter, if a bit more flexible.
(2/3) Flavor — Substantial deduction for having flavor text that is not a boast, but otherwise it all looks good.

Polish
(3/3) Quality — All good.
(2/2) Main Challenge — Yep.
(2/2) Subchallenges — Yep yep.

Ragnfrid, Lurker in the Mist 2U

When nothing stands in your way, the whole of the world tree becomes your domain.
2/3
Design
(2/3) Appeal — Timmy is interested in a good-size flier that brings a bunch of tempo along with him. Spike can see the potential but is worried about falling behind since this basically takes a whole turn to activate. Johnny wishes this wasn't limited to once a turn, but definitely has uses for a double untap.
(2/3) Elegance — I know it would sound a bit awkward, but this should probably follow Toils of Night and Day since I think people would be confused about the fact that you have to either tap or untap both things, so can't (for example) tap a blocker and give Ragnfrid pseudo-vigilance.

Development
(2/3) Viability — This doesn't really feel rare to me. For comparison, Ardenvale Tactician is a common, and obviously this is couldn't be common but I think it could be an uncommon without much of a problem. Blue is certainly correct.
(2.5/3) Balance — Very solid in limited – basically impossible to block, even if it is a big mana investment to get there. Hard to imagine a constructed format where this would be good though.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness — Fun but not very fresh. Toils of Night and Day has done the double tap/untap of any permanents, Goldmaw Champion has done the boast-tap, and this feels like a pretty straightforward combination of those two with flying thrown in.
(2/3) Flavor — This flavor text could so easily become a boast, but it just isn't…

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality — I think I forgot to deduct for this last round, but the name isn't bolded.
(2/2) Main Challenge — Done.

Even Istfell is too kind for cowards such as you.
3/3
Design
(2.5/3) Appeal — Timmy likes slugfests, and this encourages those, so they're all for it. Johnny wants to put this in a bounce deck and go crazy. Spike is the only one who's not fully on board since the card isn't heavy on choices, but they do like that the boast doesn't give their opponents a lot of good options.
(1.5/3) Elegance — Serious microtext problems even before the flavor text, which drives it totally over the top. Also the boast ability takes a couple reads to fully understand, but once you get it it makes sense.

Development
(3/3) Viability — Definitely correct on every count.
(2.5/3) Balance — Really good with bounce spells. Like, probably too good. But on a 4-mana rare that's not crazy. Otherwise it's just a hate card for graveyard shenanigans that also plays well in a weenie deck.

Creativity
(3/3) Uniqueness — Yeah, I mean, "attacked and died" is new, "didn't attack or block" is new – I'll give full points for two phrases that haven't been seen before.
(2.5/3) Flavor — This is the closest yet to being a boast, but it still doesn't *quite* get there since it's more like a putdown. Otherwise I like the idea of a reaper who hates cowardice so much that they fully annihilate your spirit.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality — Missing quotes in the flavor text.

Creatures you control can boast if they blocked this turn. (Only once each turn.)
"Strike boldly and stand firmly. With me by your side, you have nothing to fear."
2/3
Design
(2/3) Appeal — Timmy likes making things indestructible, and he double likes being able to do it twice as often. Spike is interested in being able to ambush people with a good boast on their turn, but not over the moon. Johnny finds the last ability weird and quirky, but the fact that it only does anything with 17 other cards is a bit disappointing.
(2.5/3) Elegance — Dangerously close to microtext, but a lot of that is reminder text so you're just on the right side of the line. The only deduction is for the fact that you left the reminder text on the boast ability unchanged, even though it's not actually true that you can only activate it if it attacked, given the second ability.

Development
(3/3) Viability — Yes, white is the color that would do all of these things, and yes, it's a rare.
(3/3) Balance — An absolute house in limited. That ability makes combat a nightmare for your opponent, even if it is weak to a large flyer since it can't protect itself. Would see play as a two-of or so if standard had a white weenie deck, especially because it would be amazing in the mirror match.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness — Definitely inspired by Birgi, God of Storytelling messing with boast, and is a reasonably predictable take on it, but still, it feels fresh enough.
(3/3) Flavor — I love the friendly boast. Perfect.

Polish
(3/3) Quality — I already deducted for the boast reminder text so I'm not going to double up.

(1/2) Subchallenges — No "permanent."

Titus, Sorrow of Ardenvale 1BB
Legendary Creature - Zombie Specter [R]
Flash
Boast — 1BB: Each opponent discards a card or sacrifices a token permanent. Put a +1/+1 counter and your choice of a flying, lifelink, deathtouch, or menace counter on Titus, Sorrow of Ardenvale.
The fallen champion regains his once prodigous skill with each battle won, and each soul he devours.
2/2
Design
(2/3) Appeal — Timmy can be a bit of a griefer and so loves the idea of punishing their opponent while growing their own creature. Spike likes having their choice of counters, and the punisher ability is barely a choice anyway (if the opponent has a token they're almost always going to sacrifice that anyway) so they don't really mind. Johnny doesn't see much to like.
(2.5/3) Elegance — If you can fully level this up it will have five different counter types on it, which is a lot to track. But otherwise it's fairly straightforward.

Development
(3/3) Viability — Yeah, black can get all those abilities, and definitely a rare.
(2.5/3) Balance — A real pain to play against in limited, since once you start getting this going it's basically impossible to block well. In standard, flash is pretty important since it prevents it from eating removal right away, but I still don't think it would be enough – the boast cost is so high that you won't be able to play your other cards so a removal spell will still be nasty.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness — Some strong Grimdancer vibes, with a bit of Eradicator Valkyrie and Axgard Braggart thrown in. But there are some new elements.
(1/3) Flavor — Flavor text is not a boast. Typeline is strange – we've had plenty of undead-looking things that are just specters, so I don't see the need for zombie. I don't like having the name of a court on a card that isn't in the right color for that court (same with guild, shard, clan, etc.) – you don't tend to see that on real cards because it would confuse people when they open packs. But I don't have a problem with a creature from Eldraine boasting; it seems very appropriate.

Polish
(2/3) Quality — Typo in "prodigious" and it should just be "token" – there's no such thing as a permanent that's not a token.
(2/2) Main Challenge — Yep.
(1.5/2) Subchallenges — Only giving half points for Subchallenge 2 since permanent doesn't really belong there.

Darhon of the Fair Mattock 1rw
Legendary Creature - Dwarf Warrior (r)
Haste
Darhon of the Fair Mattock cannot be blocked by creatures with flying.
Boast -- 2: Each player who controls more lands than you sacrifices a land.
There:s always a way out and a way in if you go underneath."

Design
(2/3) Appeal — Another card that appeals to griefer Timmies, who also don't mind a 3/3 haste. Spike definitely likes denying their opponents resources, and doesn't mind being able to slide this under a big, vigilant angel. Johnny is not interested.
(3/3) Elegance — Very easy to understand.

Development
(3/3) Viability — The anti-flying stuff feels a little out of place outside of green, but it's flavorful enough that I'm sure it's fine. Everything else is totally appropriate.
(3/3) Balance — Feels pretty balanced to me – it's not going to be much more than a Brazen Scourge against other aggro decks, but definitely good against control/ramp, whose main advantage is going to be going over the top of you. The "each" gives it some extra oomph in constructed.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness — Evasion ability is a mini-Bower Passage. Boast ability is kind of like a reverse Knight of the White Orchid, but the fact that it's reversed makes it reasonably fresh.
(2.5/3) Flavor — Yeah, the flavor text counts as a boast, I think. A bit confused by the name, though – what does "fair" mean in this context. Like, the opposite of "unfair"? Or blond? Or very attractive? I don't get it.

Polish
(2/3) Quality — "Can't be blocked." Minor punctuation trouble in the flavor text.
(2/2) Main Challenge — Done.
(1/2) Subchallenges — No "permanent."
