"Blade and Panoply"
Theme
It's Knight Month here in the CCL! We will focus on more realistic approach to these type of warriors and on some of the diffrences that put them apart from the other fighters.
Warriors live and die by their equipment, both offensive and protective. The knights were no diffrent, yet they could be easily distniguishable from the other soldiers of medieval period. There few reasons.
The first were honor and customs. For instance at some point in second half of middle ages ranged weapons - both shot and thrown - became frowned upon by knights as not suited for them, yet in some older poems like La Chanson de Roland we can see remnants of archery being associated with knights. Likewise, the iconic longsword and whole familiy of swords become wildly associated with nobility and military commandership in medieval period no less, a tradition still followed up to this day in some armies.
The other one was simply money. As a landowners in feudal structures, knights were able to reap profits from taxes and use them to buy a higher quality equipment then the more common folk. What the "higher quality" meant changed with time, as more productions methods were discovered and more steel and iron flooded the market, yet you would not see a drafted soldier in plate armour.
Finally, most of knights had some kind of insignia when going to battle. It allowed both quicker recognision of foe and friend, especially since the crest had varied shapes based on land of lineage origin (there were german, frankish and many diffrent variations). Moreover, the emblem signified the importance of warrior and a possibility - as they were land- and goodwners - for a ransom, which was a popular back then.
