A few years ago, I posted the first version of Thallidpocalypse onto mtgsalvation, whose premise was a plane on which thallids had caused the apocalypse. Since then, I found a number of problems with the mechanics and designs, and I ended up reimagining the entire set. Nearly every card in it is different from the original. In total, there are now 105 commons, 82 uncommons, 65 rares, and 17 mythics for a total of 269 cards.

Scatter (Create a green Spore artifact token with ": Spores you control become 1/1 Saproling creatures.")

Scatter is the main mechanic for the thallids and shows up in green/black. It assumes the use of two-sided Spore/Saproling tokens. My intention is that it stays true to the established thallid mechanic of creating saprolings periodically that are sacrificed for value.

Monitor (If you cast this spell from your hand, exile it as it resolves. Whenever you signal an event, you may cast it from exile without paying its mana cost.)

Another theme of the set is the automation of civilization, and monitor is the mechanic that represents that. It shows up in every color except green. Certain cards in the set will signal events, and other cards (including monitor cards) care about events being signaled. It's an A/B mechanic, so I made sure that there were lots of each kind so you can get enough in limited. I think this is a cool space to play in, because you can build up a lot of stuff and then go crazy when an event is signaled.

Scatter and monitor are both slower mechanics, so I wanted to add something that lends itself to being aggressive. This is a red/green mechanic that helps break board stalls and works with cards that care about power/toughness.

I remember the first time you attempted this set, and I'm glad you're making another attempt because the world concept is a lot of fun.

Won't say anything about individual cards yet but as for the mechanics I think you have one hit and a couple of misses. Scatter looks good; it works well with itself even if it's underwhelming initially, and it's a cool way for a token deck to keep a bunch of dudes in reserve for the late game. The technical issue here is obviously transform - trying to reference this particular keyword action on a token is impossible now and far more trouble than it's worth to try to kludge it with whatever rules changes you're imagining. Just say "becomes a 1/1 Saproling creature" - if this set were in real-life packs the tokens could just be double-sided, meaning representing this could be very easy.

The other two mechanics are almost do-nothing abilities, and that's something you dearly want to avoid when your marquee mechanic "does nothing" until the late game.

Stimulate is only effective with haste creatures on the attack and flash creatures on the block, and that's a pretty small subset of all the creatures in the game, to say nothing about the ones in Standard and heaven forfend, Limited. Yes there are other effects that check power and toughness, but the primary use for having a bigger creature by far is making it more effective in combat, and this ability is a tease: A pump ability that's almost never going to matter in combat.

Monitor is really two mechanics in an A/B pair and they're very parasitic: Monitor itself does nothing unless you trigger an event, and the event ability word (which has a confusing name by the way - even experienced players could easily think monitor works with all triggered abilities) does nothing at all. There's a lot of design space for rebound variants but I really don't think something that's arguably even more parasitic than splice onto arcane is the way to go.

Regarding stimulate and monitor, I am aware of the potential issues you pointed out, and they worry me too. However, I still feel like a parasitic A/B mechanic can be done well, such as with host/augment. I tried to put as much support as I possibly could for the archetypes into the set, so that players won't be left with all monitor cards with no way to trigger an event, or stimulate cards with no way to take advantage of them. Nearly every card that triggers an event also does something else, so you're never going to be doing nothing with the cards. That being said, only time will tell if everything plays out as I imagine it in my head.

I'm not especially attached to having the tokens say transform over becomes, although I do think it is more resonant. I'm no rules expert, so if the rules change needed would be difficult at all, I'm fine rewording it. To me, trigger an event was always very distinct from triggered ability, though that's probably because I made the mechanic. I'm glad to get your outside impression on that, and I can think about words that could replace trigger.

Update:

I ended up changing the stimulate mechanic from "Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn" to ": Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Stimulate only any time you could cast a sorcery and only once each turn". While I think the original could still work, I decided that having both the original stimulate and monitor in the same set probably wasn't a good idea.

I also took the wording change suggestions, the spores now become saprolings instead of transform into them and events are signaled rather than triggered. A few minor card tweaks were made as well.

Stimulate looks good in the revision! It's a cool way to switch between go-wide and go-tall on the fly, and that's something certain archetypes can make use of.

Scatter is still my favorite, but I think it could use something to make it more splashy. I'll give that some thought.
