The battle rages on.

Kaldheim is a Norse and Celtic inspired set of warring clans, vying for the favor of the gods.
It's a top-down set, with a focus on combat. Expect low curves, efficient creatures, and a fast limited.

A simple DFC mechanic, Glory represents brave warriors and mighty gods dying in battle and coming back in a different form. Featured in WUBRG colors, Currently planning on a cycle at common, one or two signpost uncommons, potentially a few across colors there, and then another cycle at rare and mythic.

There will still be some BG cards that make Runes, though they'll have a much lower asfan, a little like non-BG food in Eldraine. Expect a treatment closer to Food than what investigate got in SOI.

Raid is simple, functional and in my opinion quite evocative of the set's top-down inspirations — Viking does mean raider after all. It promotes aggressive strategies in both limited and constructed, something I'm definitely looking for out of the set. It appears in BRG, the last BRx combination for it that hasn't appeared in a canon Wizards of the Coast set.

Goals


— Further exploratory design, more playtesting of current mechanic suite.
— Look for a better name, avoid canon sniping / better show top-down inspirations.
— Develop flavor/world, lean harder on Celtic influences.
— Get the set to the point of a full 101 commons for playtesting.
— Amass a longer list of top-down concepts to execute both in lore and on cards.

Welcome, planeswalker, to the frigid wastes of Kaldheim! A land of winter, gods, and warriors, this is the set hub for my current project, KHM, being developed here and on the Custom Magic discord server (see last link in the first post of the thread). Right now, I'm working on filling out the commons skeleton; three colors fully complete so far, for the first draft at least, all visible on the set%27s Planesculptors page, the same site that will be used for drafting as soon as all 101 common cards are completed.

I'd love to hear any and all feedback on cards (in particular the black commons), mechanics, flavor or archetypes. The PS page is currently fully up-to-date, barring one or two small changes, and I plan on soon transcribing some of the cards over into forum code (both for here and for the main CC forum) if that's the format you guys would prefer to give feedback on.

Good stuff.

I think the glory cards are very cool, though the all of the commons seem a little too pushed.

I also might change glory to only trigger if the creature died having attacked that turn. Mechanics that reward blocking are pretty rare because they can cause games to stall out. The presence of Raid probably helps a little, but it is still something to keep an eye on.

Needs more squirrels.

@Deaucalion I appreciate you taking a look!
A lot of these have gotten tweaked since I posted them here / updated the Planesculptors page, though I appreciate the commentary.
I can promise you I've been planning on including a legendary squirrel at rare; which will hopefully deliver.

Speaking of updating the Planesculptors page – this is directed at anyone reading the page, not just Deau – I'll likely be doing that soon. Glory's been tweaked a bit, and like I mentioned, many of the commons have been changed! Updating the Cards post has been time consuming, so if you want to see the latest versions of them, you'll want to use Planesculptors.

My current plan is for commons-only drafting and playtesting to begin within the next week or so, once I tinker with last few slots.

I'm planning to run at least one draft, sealed, or playtest event every 1 or 2 days, editing the cards as necessary. Limited events will be hosted by me on Planesculptors, and I'll be posting Cockatrice files for download here if anyone wants to grab them.

If anyone would like to participate in the events, I would strongly encourage you to join the Custom Magic Discord server and visit the project channel (#kaldheim). That's where I'm going to be scheduling and posting links to draft lobbies, and I'll post updates on the project there much more frequently. If people are at all interested, again, I would really appreciate if they were to join and check out the channel.
