October MCC Round 3

Do not disturb

Leo's set-themed MCCs are back! And it's been a long time, my last set-themed MCC month was for Ikoria, which now is not even in Standard anymore. It was more than a year ago. It was time. And it feels good to be back! This month we will celebrate the latest set, in this case Midnight Hunt, by exploring its mechanics and themes, as usual in this kind of MCC months.

Main Challenge - Design a DFC with disturb on the front face. The card must be a Human but not a Spirit on the front face, and a Spirit but not a Human on the back face.

Subchallenge 1 - Your card has exactly two creature types on the front face and two creature types (that may or may not be the same for the purposes of this subchallenge) on the back face.

Subchallenge 2 - Your card is uncommon.

Creativity
(X/3) Uniqueness - Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel "fresh"?
(X/3) Flavor - Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?

@Lorn Asbord Schutta
@slimytrout
@Subject16
@vishamon

A reminder to everyone:
In the MCC, putting rarity on cards is mandatory! If you don't put a rarity on your card, expect huge deductions in both Viability AND Quality.
Please check out the MCC Guidelines and FAQ if you have the will and time. Link in my signature. Among the many things you can find there are a detailed explanation of the rubric (section 6.2) and the recommended card formatting (section 4) that you should use to format your text cards. Expect deductions in Quality otherwise.

Design
Appeal 2/3 - Timmy likes this creature, but he doesn't like discarding cards. Johnny could definitely do something with the discard. Spike likes this, she only wishes the disturb cost was a bit smaller.
Elegance 2.5/3 - The text is a bit long but very easy to understand. I can see the damage being equal to this creature's power on the front side and equal to target creature's power on the back face as a potential source of confusion for less experienced players, especially because it uses the same words ("equal to its power") to mean two different things.
Development
Viability 3/3 - Everything is in color and works in the rules. Rarity is acceptable, even if I think this could be rare too.
Balance 2.5/3 - I think costs are right. I like the "discard a card" costs, and I can easily see this as an enabler in madness decks. Playable in limited without any problems. I'm not sure about competitive construced, the only immediate impact this has on the board is having first strike. Probably not enough. No problems in casual or multiplayer.
Creativity
Uniqueness 2.5/3 - Disturb in red is new, the rest not as much.
Flavor 3/3 - Names, creature types, and flavor text all combine to tell a whole story on a single card. Excellent job.
Polish
Quality 2.5/3 - In "where X is..." there is an extra "the". (-0.5)
Main Challenge 2/2 - Good.
Subchallenges 2/2 - Both met.

2/3
Design
Appeal 2.5/3 - Timmy likes the impact this has on the board, even if me might not like having to sacrifice a creature himself. Johnny could probably do something with the sacrifice and the regrowth effect. Spike likes this being removal and potential card advantage.
Elegance 3/3 - The text is as short as it can be and very easy to understand.
Development
Viability 2/3 - I honestly can't see why this is white. The effects are all monoblack. This card should be monoblack in my opinion. The only white thing might be the Soldier creature type, but that could work in black too, and there are real examples. Nightsquad Commando exists and there are several other monocolored black Soldiers and also gold ones containing black. No problems with rarity or the rules.
Balance 3/3 - The costs feel right to me. This is playable in limited for sure, and I can see it making a splash in Standard too, mainly for the edict effect on etb. I see no problems in casual or multiplayer.
Creativity
Uniqueness 2/3 - Disturb in black is new, even though there are two existing gold cards with it: Dennick, Pious Apprentice and Devoted Grafkeeper, but they are white-blue. The rest is nothing new.
Flavor 3/3 - You too manage to tell a story within a single card. I could easily see the flavor elements being printed as is. You too did an excellent job here.
Polish
Quality 3/3 - All good.
Main Challenge 2/2 - Good.
Subchallenges 2/2 - Both met.

Design
Appeal 2.5/3 - Timmy likes the effects, it's just a bit too small for him. Maybe Johnny could use the tokens somehow. Spike likes a bear with upside, at least in limited.
Elegance 3/3 - The text is as short as it can be and very easy to understand.
Development
Viability 3/3 - No problems with rarity, the color pie, or the rules.
Balance 2.5/3 - Two power over two bodies for two mana, definitely acceptable with room for a little upside, which is there in the form of another token on death. The disturb cost needs to be high, given what the back side does. I like the synergy between the death trigger and disturb. This card is playable in limited, I'm not sure about competitive constructed. I see no problems in casual and multiplayer.
Creativity
Uniqueness 1/3 - Nothing new here. The whole package is technically new but no elements are.
Flavor 2.5/3 - The names are good. Flavor text too, even if it feels a bit too generic to me, but it works here.
Polish
Quality 3/3 - No rarity on the back side, but there is on the front side and we can safely assume it's the same. No deduction.
Main Challenge 2/2 - Good.
Subchallenges 2/2 - Both met.

2/2
Design
Appeal 2/3 - Timmy likes tokens, but he wants to be able to attack with them, and he doesn't want to sacrifice creatures. Johnny will gladly do instead if he can build something out of it, and he likes the challenge of finding unintended uses for decayed tokens. Spike has no problems with this.
Elegance 3/3 - The text is as short as it can be and very easy to understand.
Development
Viability 3/3 - No problems with rarity, the color pie, or the rules.
Balance 3/3 - I like the synergy between the disturb cost and the death trigger. It goes both ways: if you sacrifice a Human to disturb you get a Zombie, and you can sacrifice the decayed Zombie token to disturb. Given that decayed deprives the creature of anything useful it can do (you can probably tell I really don't like decayed), I'm always on the lookout for other ways to use it, and sacrificing it to other effects, like disturb in this case, is one of the main ways to do so. Playable in limited. May Aristocrats decks want this, either for the death trigger or the disturb cost? The back face looks like it fits more in a high removal control deck than an Aristocrats one. No problems in casual or multiplayer.
Creativity
Uniqueness 2.5/3 - Sacrificing a creature as a disturb cost is new. The rest not so much.
Flavor 2.5/3 - On the front face, Dour Ritualist is a good name. On the back face, Malevolent Geist feels a bit generic to me as a card name, but the flavor text is very good.
Polish
Quality 2/3 - "No space between the name and the mana cost on the front face. (-0.5) In the disturb cost, the word ""sacrifice"" should be capitalized. (-0.5) I don't know what that broken image link right before the color indicator is, but whatever it is, it's superfluous. There is a color indicator, so no deduction for that."
Main Challenge 2/2 - Good.
Subchallenges 2/2 - Both met.

(2/3) Appeal - Very much a Txmmy card. Jxnny has many extremely similar options but has multiple ways to manipulate this card. Spike likes this card only for Limited.
(2.5/3) Elegance - Mostly just about as elegant as a card would need to be for uncommon. Front face has a ETB or dies trigger so the death trigger part can be easy to miss for less experienced or attentive players.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Color and rarity both right imo.
(3/3) Balance - Pretty fairly costed Limited card. Not necessarily anything anyone would consider for Constructed except for maybe a tribal EDH deck.

Creativity
(0.5/3) Uniqueness - Pretty boilerplate design - The first side is a virtual vanilla and the back side is not unique since there are literally at least a dozen creatures with power and/or toughness equal to the number of creatures their controller controls.
(2.5/3) Flavor - Works well enough for me, except that the names of both sides are generic.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks good.

Design
(2/3) Appeal - Not much of a Txmmy card but Jxnny and Spike both see plenty of appeal for the flexibility and the potential as an enabler.
(3/3) Elegance - About where it needs to be.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - Uncommon is right - arguably the white mana in the cost is not needed but it doesn't detract from the card.
(3/3) Balance - A couple of good ETB effects on the same card for sure but nothing overpowered.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - A fairly new twist in a long line of "everybody sacrifices" ETB effects.
(3/3) Flavor - Really good creative writing on the names and flavor text. Tells an excellent story.

Design
(3/3) Appeal - Txmmy likes the loads of tokens. Jxnny has plenty of death trigger shenanigans to pull. Spike thinks both sides are potentially useful.
(2.5/3) Elegance - There is a fair amount of tracking here with triggered abilities on both sides and potentially a large number of tokens with decayed.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - This is a complicated enough card that I could see an argument that it would have to be rare rather than uncommon.
(3/3) Balance - Pretty efficient, especially with the cheap disturb cost, but nothing objectionable I think.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - Front face is a lot like Xathrid Necromancer. The dynamic with the back face and the nonmana part of the disturb cost are new twists.
(2.5/3) Flavor - I like this overall but the back face having nothing to do with Benevolent Geist is slightly irking.

Polish
(1.5/3) Quality - Missing a space between the name and the mana cost. "Sacrifice" in that cost should be capitalized. Finally, something seems to have gone amiss with your color indicator on the back face.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

(3/3) Appeal - Txmmy likes blowing stuff up. Jxnny has plenty of broken Voltron things to do. Spike likes repeatable removal on a recurrable creature.
(2.5/3) Elegance - The activated ability of the back face is relatively math-heavy.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - Arguably ought to be rare rather than uncommon.
(2.5/3) Balance - Front face is good but certainly not OP. The activated ability of the back face is STUPENDOUSLY strong but six mana is a pretty steep disturb cost.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness - Pretty unique stuff - both faces have something interesting going on.
(3/3) Flavor - Great. Skathul is a deep flavor reference.

(3/3) Quality - Looks good.

I have just noticed, but it is not entirely true - like bravelion83 has spotted, there is a wrongly placed "the" in the Vengeful Skathul's text. Due to small difference in total points, I think it might matter.
That is true! Of course I wouldn't take away more than 0.5 points meaning you and slimytrout would both qualify for the final.
Lorn Asbord Schutta: 22 + 22.5 = 44.5
slimytrout: 22.5 + 22 = 44.5
