Theory: given a criteria that says "Design an artifact card with "Thran" or "Phyrexian" in its name", some people like myself will sometimes start reading at "card" for some reason, and if the challenge instead said "Design a card that's an artifact with "Thran" or "Phyrexian" in its name" the same mistake would not occur.

(I'm sitting out this December since I want to spend my creative energies elsewhere, but I look forward to seeing how this month unfolds!)

While that phrasing is certainly awkward, if putting "card" first really means that people will comprehend the challenges better it's worthwhile. I'll try to state challenges like that from now on.

I agree it's a little more awkward. I'm interested to see how it goes!

With a sample size of n=1 (looking at you, bravelion83) it seems to have not been terribly effective...

Did I do it again? Let me post my MCC judgments and then I'll check this. Done.

EDIT: D'OH! You know what doesn't help me at all here in the CCL? The huge size of the challenge text. I might have more trouble with it than I've ever thought or cared to admit. My myopia probably striking again. It's either that or else I can't understand why I don't have this problem in the MCC, even when other people host so I have to read challenges to judge like any player.

I've removed the card. I'll come up with something else.

Ok, I've got my card for the DCC today. I needed that, and I really liked the card I came up with. Ok, time to go dive into past lore. The only thing I know is Teferi's Protection...
EDIT: Wait! Femeref is the home of Kwende! That's someone I know!
EDIT: Ok, done. Thanks to Dominaria (last year's set), Martha Wells, and Kwende! I didn't need to know any old lore.

It kind of faded from view, but it's ended, so congratulations to @Ryder for winning the November CCL!

Just so you know, if you want to mention someone, you don't do it with @ but with mention tags:
Ryder
becomes:
Ryder

The @ is added automatically. I've discovered all of this by chance one day.

And I also add myself to the congratulations to him.

So there is a shortcut inspired by social networking sites to get mention tags. You type @ and then follow it up with a username or part of a username, and you'll be given a dropdown to choose from. When you click on the name you want the forum software will wrap it in mention tags.

Also, I was remiss in not declaring Ryder the winner of November's CCL, but there you have it, congratulations to Ryder!

Always funny when people think your card does both too much and too little. Obviously not the sign of the best design on my part, although I did try to triangulate it with existing cards like Padeem, Consul of Innovation and Privileged Position.

Please remember to get your December Round 1 and 2 critiques in by tonight!

Also, I am seeking an organizer for the January CCL.

Going to calculate scores and post December's Top 8 in a few hours from now. If you haven't critiqued and top 3'd until now, here's your chance to do so before I get the next thread up.

Edit: Unexpectedly delayed till tomorrow.

@slimytrout

Of course it is not personal, here we are criticizing the work of fellow designers and pointing at the appropriateness (Is that even a word?) of a card is something relevant.

I understand what you say regarding Cassie. Characters like Captain Lannery Storm and Admiral Beckett Brass struck me as amazing regarding portraits of female characters. We all know most female despictions in magic can be regarded as fitting into beauty standards.

But this is old lore and as such you run the risk of diluting it when pouring the anachronism of present day into the mix. Homelands was a long time ago, and all its lore is as old. Just look at Folk of An-Havva. They are having fun. Freedom of conduct is what An-Havva stands for, far from the upright bureaucracy of Aysen. Their most proud institution is An-Havva Inn.

Cassie almost gets killed while partying in the street, saying that wine makesnstars shine and inviting everybody to party until dawn. She's too drunk to even realize what the hell just had happened. Saved by Feroz who just happened to be there having a drink with Serra. By no means I intended to characterize her as a hot wench with dubious morals. As an An-Havva, she just has fun and fun is what the Inn offers.

There's the issue of what would be Magic-appropriate material so as today. While Homelands was long ago (We see in the same comic that Taysir gets his skull split in half with a sword, close-up), this is far from being blatantly inappropriate ala Alaborn Zealot. Sure, it can be debated how to make it more safe. After all, that is what design teams do. They used to get away with more, sure, but things as a sideboob in vitalizing cascade didn't actually make much waves.

Just wanted you to know where Cassie came from.

Thanks for the very thoughtful response! I definitely understand that there are interesting questions when it comes to designing cards that deal with old sets: obviously we're not operating with the idea that mana burn and damage-on-the-stack still exist, but how far are we willing to bend the lore? (One of the many reasons why we probably can't expect Return to Ulgrotha any time soon.) So I also very much get where you're coming from -- the flavor text that you wrote is in keeping with the character that Wizards made, even if it is from many years before they decided they actually wanted women to play their game (kidding, but not really). I also apologize if I categorized your description of her too harshly -- I'm not nearly as fluent in the lore from back then, so I had only the fairly meager descriptions of the internet to go off of. Anyway, I did like the card itself, and it would have made my T3 if not for the flavor text. I appreciate you being understanding!

I have no idea who this is.
I wrote this about Cassie, so I also thank you for explaining that. I judged the card only from a mechanical point of view because I had literally no idea who she was.

Actually, now I'm curious what you had changed it to. What was the real flavor text that this card was supposed to have.
It was going to be "GAMBLING AND VIOLENCE!" since that better captured what the card was supposed to be about -- in the first story where we meet Breeches, he's about to go play cards, plus his only flavor text is on Gamble.

Yeah, that would have been good. The one you have is good, but you're right, this would have been even better. Anyway, you can't go wrong with him! And not only that's his only flavor text, he doesn't even have a real card!

void_nothing: I can host the CCL in January, since it doesn't seem like anyone else is inclined to and you shouldn't have to run two CCL's at once.

Copy/pasting here my "work in progress" spoiler with all the other versions I've considered to avoid both having it in my submission post and having it gone forever. There is one in particular that tempted me until the very end. If anybody wants to comment on these, it's probably best to wait for the critique phase to be over.
work in progress
Show
Hide
Pendelhaven

version 1

Pendelhaven, the Eldest Tree
Legendary Land (R)
T: Add G.
G, T: Target creature you control gets +1/+2 until end of turn.

version 2 is my official submission.

Serra's Sanctum

version 1

Serra's Paradise
Legendary Land (R)
T: Add C.
T: Add W. Activate this ability only if you control three or more enchantments.

version 2

Serra's Paradise
Legendary Land (R)
T: Add C.
Constellation — Whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, you may tap Serra's Paradise. If you do, add W.

The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

version 1

Pendrell Vale
Legendary Land (R)
T: Add C.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player sacrifices a creature unless they pay 1.

version 2

Pendrell Vale
Legendary Land (R)
T: Add C.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player may sacrifice a creature. When they don't, tap target land that player controls.

Reflexive trigger is needed here. Also, they can't choose not to sac, have you choose the target, and then tap that land for mana knowing it's about to get tapped anyway. We're in the middle of an ability resolving, so they can't, which is good. You will deny them one mana that turn.

No, those were just essentially brainstorming, not balanced in anyway. I just posted them here because I wanted to keep them and I didn't want to keep them in my submission post. That's all. If you find things that aren't properly balanced, well, guess what? They probably aren't, and you're probably right.
