March MCC, Round 1 - 50/50 Shot

Welcome to the March MCC! It's Fortune Month here at the MCC. With the chances of March going in like a lion and out like a lamb being even, with March 17 being associated with the luck of the Irish, with Friday the 13th falling this month and many other luck-based traditions including on Annunciation, it's time to explore the role of chance in Magic!

Main Challenge: Design a card that can cause one or more players to flip coins.
Subchallenge 1: Your card is not red.
Subchallenge 2: Your card is not a creature.

DEADLINES

Design deadline: Sunday, March 8th 23:59 EDT

Creativity
(X/3) Uniqueness - Has a card like this ever been printed before? Does it use new mechanics, ideas, or design space? Does it combine old ideas in a new way? Overall, does it feel "fresh"?
(X/3) Flavor - Does the name seem realistic for a card? Does the flavor text sound professional? Do all the flavor elements synch together to please Vorthos players?

Polish
(X/3) Quality - Points deducted for incorrect spelling, grammar, and templating.
(X/2) Main Challenge (*) - Was the main challenge satisfied? Was it approached in a unique or interesting way? Does the card fit the intent of the challenge?

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - Not much appeal for Timmy. Johnny can appreciate the deckbuilding challenge to avoid the worst negatives, while Spike doesn't care for the randomness, but also recognizes it can be mitigated
(2.5/3) Elegance - It's fairly easy to parse what this is doing. It's a chaotic planeswalker card that is partial to artifacts. It's not terribly unified in what it wants to do with artifacts though.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Colorless can do most things, and being artifact centric helps it here. MR seems appropriate.
(2/3) Balance - I like the +1, but the -1 a bit less. There are artifacts that like being sacrificed that help here, but it's still a somewhat painful fail condition. Ajani, Mentor of Heroes suggests it could also be a +1 instead, which would help. The -7 should exclude Karn himself I feel, to make building around this feel maximally rewarding.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - Not a whole lot new here. It's a Karn that likes artifacts, but I will note we haven't had a planeswalker go all in on a chaos theme.
(2/3) Flavor - It's a chaotic Karn card alright, but it feels a bit generic.

Polish
(1.5/3) Quality - Checking gatherer suggests needing to use 'Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three artifact creatures' instead of any number. at 4 or higher, or X, any number is then called for. As well, the proper template for planeswalkers (which can be found in bravelion83's signature in the link about MCC guidelines) shows that brackets around loyalty and loyalty costs are improper. The activated abilities also need the all important ":" to show it's an activated ability.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(2/2) Subchallenges - Nonred noncreature, so both satisfied.

Total: 18/25

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - Not much for Timmy; the coin flip doesn't have much excitement behind it. Johnny's not really interested beyond it being a bit of an engine. Spike hates randomness, but at least it's all upside, and reasonably efficient.
(2.5/3) Elegance - It's easy enough to understand, but it does feel weird that the tails effect is arguably better than the heads effect,

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - Doesn't break the color pie, but it doesn't feel like an appropriate use of coin flips. It's also at an odd place where it could be uncommon, but Limited concerns probably force it up.
(2.5/3) Balance - It's got a 50/50 shot of being either efficient, or over-efficient. It's not breaking anything, but it's by no means weak.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - It does typical specter things, but it does feel a bit different.
(1.5/3) Flavor - It's a specter, but it could be a specter of anywhere. Why Vess Manor? I do note there isn't much room for flavor text to help here.

Polish
(2/3) Quality - Should be "If that coin comes up", not "If it's". Should be "if it has a +1/+1 counter on it"
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(1/2) Subchallenges - Nonred, but it is a creature.

Total: 17/25

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - Timmy likes how splashy this is. Johnny doesn't see anything too interesting here. Spike hates the randomness, but does like that both results are efficient.
(1.5/3) Elegance - There's a lot going on here, and it's very wordy for it. The first possibility isn't too complex, but the other result generates 4 different tokens.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - Untapping lands is a little odd for white, but as a reward of sorts it's fine. Cards that generate a bunch of different tokens aren't unheard of, just not very common. Rarity is appropriate.
(1.5/3) Balance - While I can agree not being sure to get what you want warrants some increase in power, this is incredibly efficient whichever result you get. This also shouldn't be an instant with that in mind.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness - This does feel like a supercharged, if only one half either way, Timely Reinforcements. It's pretty unique even with that in mind though.
(2/3) Flavor - The name works, but I feel like it too could be more elegant; Faith in a Higher Power perhaps? There isn't a strong connection between the two results, which would have been nice. No room for flavor text, so the lack is fine.

Polish
(2/3) Quality - Card name should be bold. Should be "If that coin comes up" instead of "If it's". Not docking for this, but Trostani's Summoner suggests that the tokens should go from smallest to largest. Reads more impressively that way too.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(2/2) Subchallenges - A nonred, noncreature. Satisfied.

Total: 17.5/25

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - Timmy appreciates the excitement of Audacity, even if the card itself isn't that flashy. Johnny isn't interested. Spike doesn't like Audacity except in edge cases where they need it to win. The card itself is solid enough to play though.
(2.5/3) Elegance - The fact that Audacity doesn't allow new targets for the copy does hurt elegance a little bit, since it's a fairly common and expected rider for copy effects.

Development
(2/3) Viability - Fits in the color wheel, and is certainly the appropriate rarity. I don't know that Audacity would be a mechanic that'd ever see print in its current form though. I think it needs a different punishment for losing, perhaps life loss. Keeps it risky, but not too risky.
(2.5/3) Balance - Better Mighty Leap, but not in a way that breaks it. Audacity could be concerning on the wrong card, but this is fine.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - It's Mighty Leap. Audacity is pretty different though.
(3/3) Flavor - I quite like the flavor here. The name of the mechanic and the card as well as the flavor text mesh together in a very pleasing way.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks good.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(2/2) Subchallenges - It's a nonred noncreature, so double success.

Design
(1.5/3) Appeal - It's not flashy, but it's fun enough for Timmy. Johnny doesn't really care about this, as it's not a reliable source of counters. Spike can appreciate the constant advantage this gives, even if they don't like the randomness.
(1.5/3) Elegance - It's a bit odd that one gives a temporary boost and the other a permanent one. This should have been a heads/tails check instead, since neither really feels like losing, and for some people getting that counter might be winning.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Suits its colors well. Rarity appears fine as multiples of these in Limited would be quite a headache.
(2.5/3) Balance - It's a constant source of advantage once it's on the board. Multiples of these could get quite out of hand, unlike say Forced Adaptation, which has the inherit weaknesses of being an Aura.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness - Similar to a great many cards, but stands out for itself among them.
(2.5/3) Flavor - Solid flavor. Wish there was a reference to the trample in the flavor text, but it works as is.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality - Should be "choose a creature you control and flip a coin"
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(2/2) Subchallenges - Nonred noncreature. Perfect

Total: 19.5/25
*An entry with 0 points here is subject to disqualification.
Subject16

Design
(1/3) Appeal - Too much feel bad chance for Timmy, and far too much risk of aiding your opponent for Spike. Johnny will have fun trying to work with the possibilities here.
(2.5/3) Elegance - Wordy, but easy enough to understand though.

Development
(2/3) Viability - Right colors and right rarity. A lot of coin flipping though, and cards like this aren't printed often.
(1.5/3) Balance - This is incredibly swingy, but hard to control. Could be quite strong when built around. Might cost 1 more due to its high points.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness - Reminiscent of Rakdos, the Showstopper, but definitely does its own thing.
(2.5/3) Flavor - The madness mentioned in the flavor text works with the card draw, but not as much the dying though. Definitely demonically whimsical though.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality - There aren't a lot of examples (three actually, Molten Sentry, Odds//Ends, Two-Headed Giant), but the heads result should come before the tails result in the text.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Satisfied
(2/2) Subchallenges - A nonred noncreature as asked for.

The Fortune Mine 1UU
Legendary Artifact (R)
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, that player flips a coin. If they win the flip, they draw two cards.
2UU, T: The next time you would flip a coin this turn, you choose the result instead.
Klothys, god of destiny, has her favorites among the living too. She chooses them among those who take a rock from her sacred mine on the mainland.
Design
(2/3) Appeal – The only one who's fully excited is Johnny, who loves getting more draws and also loves the fact that the activated ability is so non-specific. Spike likes being able to control things a little bit with the activation, but hates the idea of giving their opponent so many (possible) extra draws. Timmy's the one who is most into the randomness, but they'd prefer it if it were more game-breaking and one-shot.
(3/3) Elegance – Sure, clear enough. I'm not 100% sure if that's how the activation should read, but it seems close enough and is definitely pretty clear from a plain English perspective.

Development
(3/3) Viability – There's only ever been one mono-blue card that flips coins, but one is enough. Definitely rare.
(2/3) Balance – Probably okay if un-abused, but I suspect it would be too good with things like Notion Thief or Narset, Parter of Veils. Random effects in general should be very toned down to avoid offending tournament players, so even being close to the line is probably too good.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness – First ability resembles a double Howling Mine, but second is pretty unprecendented.
(2/3) Flavor – Doubly weird that Klothys, the R/G god, would have a blue artifact and that it would be associated with "fortune" (i.e., luck) which is, in some ways, the opposite of destiny.

Polish
(3/3) Quality – Looks good.
(2/2) Main Challenge – Yes.
(2/2) Subchallenges – Double yes.

Chimera of Fortune 1GU
Creature - Chimera {R}
Trample
At the beginning of your upkeep, flip a coin. If you win the flip, put a number of +1/+1 counters on Chimera of Fortune equal to its power.
Whenever Chimera of Fortune becomes the target of a spell or ability, its controller flips a coin. If that player loses the flip, counter that spell or ability.
2/3
Design
(2/3) Appeal – Timmy loves it – creatures with the potential to randomly get out of control are right in their wheelhouse. Spike doesn't mind their card having some built-in protection but doesn't like the randomness. Johnny likes the fact that it counts power rather than number of counters, so that anthems/lords help, but otherwise not much to interest them.
(2/3) Elegance – Not going to ding you too hard here because I'm also taking away points in Quality, but it's very unclear who is supposed to be flipping the coin in the second ability.

Development
(3/3) Viability – Could maybe be mono-green, which is allowed to protect its creatures, but U/G is definitely fine. Rare is good.
(3/3) Balance – Fine in limited, not playable in constructed (which is as it should be for a coin-flipping card).

Creativity
(3/3) Uniqueness – Never been anything quite like either ability.
(2/3) Flavor – A green trampling creature that doubles its +1/+1 counters? Why isn't this a hydra?
Polish
(2/3) Quality – Not clear who is flipping the coin in the second ability – if the Chimera's controller does it, then it should just say "… ability, flip a coin." If the spell/ability's controller does it (which I assume), then it should say "the controller of that spell or ability flips a coin." (-1)
(2/2) Main Challenge – Yes, twice over.
(1/2) Subchallenges – Not red, but a creature.

(3/3) Appeal – Timmy likes swinging in with beaters turn after turn and doesn't mind losing them randomly. Johnny can think of a million ways to abuse this that don't care about the flip. If Spike is playing this, they're going to win that turn instead of waiting for the flip.
(1.5/3) Elegance – Too long for flavor text to fit elegantly. Not sure why it's "choose" instead of "target" – I guess to neuter targeted graveyard hate? Seems unnecessary (and bad for balance).

Development
(3/3) Viability – Definitely black and definitely rare.
(1.5/3) Balance – Part of the reason the appeal score is so high is that this is almost certainly too good. The fact that you have to wait until your upkeep helps, but the ability to bring things back with haste more than makes up for it. Basically any deck that's playing this will kill you if you let it trigger (absent mass graveyard hate, since targeted hate isn't great).

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness – Strong Shallow Grave vibes, although obviously the coin flip part is new.
(3/3) Flavor – Name is fun, flavor text is a bit bland (and wouldn't fit) but nothing wrong with it.
Polish
(1.5/3) Quality – Enchantment should be capitalized (-0.5), missing comma after upkeep (-0.5), should say "for each creature with a servitude counter *on it*" (-0.5). Probably should say "gains haste until end of turn," but there is precedent for not doing so (see: suspend), so no deduction.
(2/2) Main Challenge – Yes.
(2/2) Subchallenges – Double yes.

Contract of Chances 3BB
Instant (R)
As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may sacrifice X creatures.
Flip X coins, where X is the number of creatures you sacrificed as you cast this spell. For each flip you win, you may search you library for a card and put that card into your hand, then shuffle your library. For each flip you lose, sacrifice a nonland permanent, if you can't, lose 3 life.
"Oh come now, what's the harm in a little gamble, hm?" -Hyrox, Archlord of Greed
Design
(1/3) Appeal – Timmy hates all the sacrificing and the fact that you don't even get to put things on the board. Johnny loves a multi-tutor, even (or perhaps especially) with such extreme costs. Spike despises it for many reasons, not least because they're occasionally going to lose to a Johnny who wins all three coin flips.
(1.5/3) Elegance – Not even close to long enough for flavor text, let alone multiple lines of it. Overall very wordy.

Development
(3/3) Viability – Super black, definitely rare.
(1.5/3) Balance – Man, this card would make people miserable. Since you can play it at instant speed, you'd basically wait until you built up the maximum number of creatures before you died, then cast it at the end of your opponent's turn and hope to win enough flips to find your one-of combo pieces, with the end result being that this card would often read: "sacrifice X creatures to flip X coins: if you win at least 2 coin flips, you win the game." I don't know if that's broken, since you almost certainly lose if you lose too many flips (or if this gets countered), but it sure isn't balanced.

Creativity
(3/3) Uniqueness – Not a lot of multi-tutors in magic, and certainly none like this.
(2.5/3) Flavor – The "hm" in the flavor text doesn't sound much like an archlord to me, but otherwise fine.
Polish
(0.5/3) Quality – Should say "sacrifice any number of creatures" (-0.5), "your library" (-0.5), period before "if you can't" (-0.5), "you lose 2 life" (-0.5), and have a line break before quote attribution (-0.5).
(2/2) Main Challenge – Yes.
(2/2) Subchallenges – Double yes.

Autonomized Prototype 2
Artifact - Vehicle (r)
At the begining of your upkeep, flip a coin. If you win the flip put a +1/+1 counter on Autonomized Prototype and it becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.
Crew 1 (Tap any number of untapped creatures you control with total power 1 or greater: This permanent becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.)
3/2
Design
(1.5/3) Appeal – Timmy likes that it randomly grows and that it self-animates, so they're all in. Johnny doesn't see anything to like. Spike doesn't mind the base rate or the 50% upside, but they don't love the randomness overall.
(3/3) Elegance – Very clean and simple.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability – I think this would be better off if the stats were shaved a bit and it was moved to uncommon (compare to Untethered Express, but I can kinda understand making it rare. Definitely works in colorless.
(3/3) Balance – Compared to some of the busted vehicles this is very weak, compared to some of the unplayable ones, it's a bit better. Fine in limited but hard to imagine it in constructed.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness – There's been a creature that grows from coin flips (Chaotic Goo), a vehicle that grows over time (Untethered Express), and a vehicle that self-animates (Mizzium Tank), but definitely never all three together.
(3/3) Flavor – Autonomized because it can self-animate, prototype cuz it's random, all makes sense. Nothing revolutionary, but it doesn't need to be to get full points.
Polish
(1.5/3) Quality – "Beginning" misspelled (-0.5), missing comma after "win the flip," (-0.5) and, I know this is pedantic, but there's a double space after "Crew 1" (-0.5).
(2/2) Main Challenge – Yes.
(2/2) Subchallenges – Double yes.

(2/3) Appeal - A definite Txmmy/Jxnny toy (Txmmy just to see the looks on their faces, Jxnny because they have ways to benefit when their opponents draw/Krark's Thumb/reasons to flip ten coins). Spike would not go near it.
(2.5/3) Elegance - Ten flips is a lot, but the basic effect is super simple and it's a mythic.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Very mythic, and in the context of Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom it feels blue.
(2.5/3) Balance - Kind of swingy but makes both players draw a bunch on average.

Creativity
(2/3) Uniqueness - May be "just" a big Vision Skeins but no pure draw spell has ever been done quite like this before.
(3/3) Flavor - Love it, and it makes perfect sense, especially the flavor text.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks good.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

Design
(1/3) Appeal - Nothing to excite Txmmy. Spike wants their any-color sources to be way more reliable. Jxnny has things to tinker with here.
(2.5/3) Elegance - Nothing too inelegant but the use of morph feels fairly random here.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Rare land checks out.
(2/3) Balance - The swinginess of the coin flip makes this either a really good or a really bad land; perhaps not that big of a swing, but it's still something that can make the game very different depending on how a first turn coin flip goes.

Creativity
(1/3) Uniqueness - A fairly straight mashup of Zoetic Cavern and Gemstone Caverns.
(1/3) Flavor - Something's not clicking here; the name feels pretty generic for a coin flip land and does nothing to explain the morph, and no flavor text doesn't help.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Fine.

(2/3) Appeal - A serious Txmmy/Jxnny appeal card that Spike would not want.
(2/3) Elegance - Really complex in terms of tracking and busywork, especially for an uncommon, but at its heart it's just pump or reduce.

Development
(2.5/3) Viability - Colors look about on point but I'd prefer this to be rare.
(3/3) Balance - Swingy, but not objectionable; no matter your coin flipping success pumping a creature huge (or, I suppose, killing an opponent's creature) could take a lot of upkeeps.

Creativity
(2.5/3) Uniqueness - I guess this is inspired by Unstable Mutation and its ilk but there are a lot of unique ideas here.
(2/3) Flavor - Perfectly serviceable even if the name feels super "obvious."

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Fine.

(1/3) Appeal - Basically a Spike only card, specifically in Limited when it has the potential to be a precious cheap 2-for-1.
(3/3) Elegance - Fairly elegant.

Development
(3/3) Viability - White and uncommon is where I'd put this, yes.
(3/3) Balance - I guess this is worth 1 over Celestial Flare. Which brings me to...

Creativity
(1/3) Uniqueness - Just Celestial Flare with a thematic bonus. Cards like this fill up sets all the time but that doesn't make them all unique ideas.
(1.5/3) Flavor - I get the name...sorta?...but the flavor text is just puzzling. It seems to have nothing to do with the name or the rules text.

Polish
(2.5/3) Quality - The "Then" is superfluous.
(2/2) Main Challenge (*) - Done.
(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

Design
(2/3) Appeal - Risk involved here is way too drastic for Txmmy. Jxnny would use this while having some way to prevent the drawback. Spike would cast this, but only on the turn before they were guaranteed to lose anyway.
(3/3) Elegance - Hard to get more elegant than "win or lose".

Development
(1/3) Viability - While the color and the rarity seem right, I don't think a card that stakes the whole game on one coin flip would be printed. See below.
(0/3) Balance - Amulet of Quoz is banned everywhere, and the principal reason for that is its use of ante. But even if there were no mention of ante on the card, I think it might still be illegal in every format. Why? Because it makes everything else that happened in the game irrelevant. It's not balanced and it's not fun. And that's a six-mana card. A tutor and BBB first-turn virtually guarantees a dedicated deck will combo out right away and win, and losing the coin flip, well, ends the game anyway. This is a card that reduces player input to zero and should not be attempted.

Creativity
(1.5/3) Uniqueness - Lots of prior influence here, including referencing two classic black combo enablers, Demonic Tutor and Dark Ritual.
(2/3) Flavor - The flavor here does work but it's both a bit abstract and on-the-nose.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Looks fine.

(2/2) Subchallenges - And done.

(3/3) Appeal - Hey, who doesn't like big grips full of cards and big mana? Even Spike would give this a try despite the randomness.
(2.5/3) Elegance - No problems here except for the possibility of taking up a bunch of time by coin flipping a LOT.

Development
(3/3) Viability - Color and rarity are spot on, obviously.
(2/3) Balance - Is this breakable? Yes, but it's a Necropotence variant, they all are. The coin flip is a good balancing agent.

Creativity
(3/3) Uniqueness - The most unique Necro I've ever seen.
(2.5/3) Flavor - Very nice name, but some short flavor text would have really tied it together.

Polish
(3/3) Quality - Good.
