Luminarch Aspirant is probably too slow to be played outside of a deck that can exploit counters, but for a 2 drop that's a pretty absurd amount of value, even if commander isn't really the place to exploit it. Definitely going to be a groaner in limited.

magmatic chaneler is spiffy in all formats though I think. The 4/4 payoff is meh, but the tap ability alone looks like a huge upgrade on Rummaging Goblin for a mana cheaper.

Leyline Tyrant looks like it'll be one of the most overrated cards of the set.

Using your mana is important people.

It could still be fun in a few decks. Mono red for instance could run a number of gauntlets but often lacks the card draw to always use said mana. In a deck with mana sinks you could also use said mana after it dies. Neheb, the Eternal could also be fun to generate a ton of mana with him.

I think its probably a bit soon to say its overrated. Its primarily a mono red tool and there is nothing wrong with that. Its not going to go everywhere but I think there will probably be some places that it is just fine.

I'm going mostly off people's reactions on mythic spoiler and reddit who think it's edh gold. I do think it has a place but I doubt it'll crack 5% on edhrec.

I do think Leyline Tyrant is pretty good, but I'm definitely anchoring to Omnath, Locus of Mana - having this ability in the 99 is much weaker than having it in the command zone. Still, a 4/4 flyer for 4 with upside and a valuable death trigger is pretty good - at the very least, I would expect it to see play in Standard.

The two spoiled precon commanders are misses for me.

Anowon, the Ruin Thief is... fine? Tribal pump effect, mill, and occasional card draw? Hmmm... I'd consider it if I were making a rogue tribal deck, but it feels like a weird mix of abilities, and not very rogue-ish. I guess rogues have a mill subtheme in this set though, so.... eh.

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor is also meh. Spreading around +1/+1 counters is good, and making one of your lands into a beefy elemental each turn isn't bad, but it's not really my thing. There are some interesting things you can do with it though - Terra Eternal, Greater Good, etc.

I tried to resist, but I'm going to build Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor (the leaked Naya commander). Why? The art, the flavor, & Naya Elves! (Skyshroud Elf has a special place in my heart.) I'm don't much care for Obuun's mechanical abilities, but they'll have their uses. Marwyn, the Nurturer, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, & Viridian Joiner produce more mana via the +1/+1 counters. An animated land can be targeted by Mercy Killing or untapped by To Arms & Benefactor's Draught. Oracle of Mul Daya & Quirion Ranger play well with landfall. Etc.

Sea Gate Restoration and Shatterskull Smashing // Shatterskull, the Hammer Pass look outstanding. Taking a say a basic Island or Mountain for either of these comes at the cost of if you have mana doublers based on land type (like High Tide for example) or are reliant on not having as many non-basics for some purposes, then they can be slotted into decks very nicely.
There are some real instances where in commander games that go long you'll get to cast for the spell element for much needed swings and then all the other games they are an untapped mono-colored land. Which is incredible when you are looking to make small gains to your deck at very low cost to card changes.

I would say most mono-red decks could play Shatterskull Smashing // Shatterskull, the Hammer Pass.
Mono-blue for Sea Gate Restoration is far less likely because of High Tide being such a powerful card for them. But even then often they are storm decks that can use every bit of additional draw you can squeeze in. So it might even be that you replace a spell in the deck so you go up a land count.
I could see Sea Gate Restoration going into two colored decks that don't care about basics or non-basics much.
Hate cards like Blood Moon, Back to Basics, Ruination, etc are all considerations and you might find that it can replace a non-basic in your deck. If you can replace a colorless land that is marginal then even better.

It's looking like there should be a Mythic green and black one as well so looking forward to what those do?

Maybe it's just because I rarely play high tide (has any game where someone cast high tide been made more fun because of it?) but I think Sea Gate Restoration is a lot stronger, personally. The removal on Shatterskull Smashing // Shatterskull, the Hammer Pass is so expensive to kill anything of significant size, and being a sorcery really kills it. Plus it caps out in utility at "kill 2 creatures/planeswalkers" which is fine I guess, but that's barely better than Curtains' Call, except CC usually costs 3 and is an instant.

By contrast, Sea Gate Restoration could be really strong, eot draw spell into sea gate restoration to keep everything and draw a ton is gnarly. Sure, it could be a bad topdeck if you're in total hellbent mode but that's pretty rare for most blue decks, and a lot of the time you're at least sandbagging a land.

If you removed the land side and the mana costs and said "how much would these need to cost for them to be playable?" for SGR it's probably not far off, at 6 I think many decks would be happy with it, and at 5 it'd likely be an all-star. For shatterskull smashing...maybe X/2 (put another way, costs X and deals twice X damage)? Even then I really doubt I'd play it anywhere. At its current mana cost, you have to pay 6 just to kill 2 x/2s! That's really not acceptable in my book. It's still playable because the opportunity cost is so low, but I think it'll be land 90% of the time. The white one is better imo, at least it's proactive so it's not dependent on having worthwhile targets. Plus while blue has high tide, red's got Gauntlet of Might. Everybody has that card, right?

Confounding Conundrum could've been white. White has a long history of anti-ramping with cards like Armageddon and Limited Resources, etc. Not to mention, it's a cheap cantrip, which white could always use. I honestly don't mind white not getting as much ramping as green, as long as I'm allowed to kill or suppress ramping.

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor is the first legend I want to build so far, then Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate at a distant second. (I like creature-based W/U)

Well, we got the green mythic land: turntimber symbiosis

Kinda disappointed since 2/3 are worthless in Phelddagrif, but at least SGR has major potential. Hopefully the black one is cool, although I'm already a big fan of hagra bite.

Oh I love the green land Turntimber Symbiosis. I play Mosswort Bridge in quite a few decks, and I see Turntimber providing more card advantage once in a while. Sweet I'll find a slot for a number of decks.

Obuun seems really terrible. Maybe not terribly weak but terribly boring. You want to make a landfall general and give him such a weak landfall trigger? You can't also build a land creature deck, since he only animates one land at time.
Looks like they didn't know what to do with him and slapped a couple of ability together at the last moment before printing him.

The two commander decks are taking over the slot of planeswalker decks, so they're intentionally underpowered/kept simple to make sure they're a viable entry point for new players and not snapped up by experienced players.

Bah. Just switching the triggers (landfall: animate a land and at the beginning of combat put a counter on a creature) would have created a much more interesting general.

I'm not super impressed by Turntimber Symbiosis // Turntimber, Serpentine Wood, but I'll never disregard a way to cheat out an Eldrazi entirely. Low opportunity cost, like the other pay-life-or-tap flip lands. Giving the creature +1/+1 counters if it's small also makes the card a bit less of a feel-bad when you don't happen to hit a fatty.

I'm unsure how good Silundi's Vision is. It's not the greatest spell, but it is instant speed, and being a tapped land when you need it isn't a terrible fail case. Hmmm....

Scourge of the Skyclaves is mildly interesting as a way to (almost) uncounterably halve the table's life totals. It's ultimately just a beater that can't be online until lategame... but a 2 mana 19/19 (or whatever) is pretty big. Loses some synergies that Death's Shadow has due to being a */* instead of a 13/13 though.

Skyclave Shadowcat is another mildly interesting card. I can't think of many other repeatable triggered draw engines at uncommon. It is extremely conditional (you need a consistent source of +1/+1 counters), but it is interesting.

Moss-Pit Skeleton + Altar of Dementia + Cathars' Crusade + Desecrated Tomb? I can't think of many other cards that trigger off a card leaving your graveyard to replace Desecrated Tomb. Jank otherwise though.

Nahiri's Lithoforming looks... pretty questionable. You could combo it with Ramunap Excavator or another effect to negate the downside, but even then it's just 'XRR: draw X cards', which is... fine, I guess? More efficient than what red usually gets, and not temporary draw, but.... I suspect the main appeal of the card is going to be to trigger landfall a bunch of times. That said, seems like a staple for Moraug, Fury of Akoum decks. 'XRR: get X additional combat steps' (or 2X steps if you have a fetchland) is enough to kill most tables.

I was actually happy about Akiri, Fearless Voyager for a moment before I remembered Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale exists. Maybe there's a world where the fact it's half the mana makes a difference, but somehow the packaged free-equip and potentially better draw kinda outweigh this.

Oddly, I think the lack of B makes a bigger difference, as a point in Akiri's favor. Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale is in black, which already has access to better card draw than "need to attack with equipped creatures". Akiri, Fearless Voyager is in Boros, which... doesn't. Or at least not from the command zone. Combine that with a protection ability that can help any of your equipped creatures, even from your own wraths, and it seems like a pretty decent package, especially at 3 mana.

I'm going to have to disagree. If you're building an equipment'y deck, having equipped swingers draw you a card is a pretty good thing, regardless of colour space. Having black allows you to find your best pieces with increased reliability too, as you can run the classic tutors on top of Stonehewer Giant et al. if desired. And seriously, that command zone access to free equip is no slouch, I can promise.

The protection ability is indeed pretty neat. Akiri 2.0 is a reasonable commander for what she is, but I still think she's outclassed by Gwyn.

Looks to be pretty darn good in Marchesa, but that's true of a lot of cards.

Lithoform Engine looks like it might be pretty good.
I have 68 active EDH decks, with more in progress. I don't consider this a problem. Do you?
I am also one of those barbarians who enjoys winning by turning creatures sideways.

I guess a part of it comes back to how one approaches deckbuilding? If the intent is "I'm gonna build the best equipment deck possible", then it's plausible that Gywn wins out (though costing twice as much in colors that are... not known for ramp without any protection for herself seems rough). But I know that a lot of people approach these questions with deck colors picked out, or at least an idea of them, and I think "Boros equipment deck" is typically more appealing than "Mardu equipment deck", since Mardu lends itself to other, more powerful playstyles.

That's a fair observation, and I see where you're coming from. I do tend to think more about legends than colour-based deck concepts, so for example my Eutropia the Twice-Favored knows it's a just about strictly crappier Tuvasa the Sunlit.

Bruvac the Grandiloquent gets an sweet combo with Maddening Cacophony. I expect to see mill decks more frequently in this format thanks to all the love they've been giving mill lately. I'm also waiting for those games where the mill player kicks Cacophony & passes only to give someone else the game by turbocharging their Replenish, Living Death, Underworld Breach, Yawgmoth's Will, etc.

Maddening Cacophony is Traumatize for all opponents, which I imagine some decks will care about. Even the base rate - eight cards for each opponent for two mana - seems pretty reasonable.

I like Skyclave Relic more than I probably should. It's a Darksteel Ingot that gets kicked into most of a Gilded Lotus, which seems reasonable. Kicked mode is worse than Lotus - it costs an extra mana and the tokens enter tapped - but I'm a sucker for cool tokens and flexible ramp.

Lithoform Engine is complete nonsense. A powerful, flexible, and expensive value engine.

Akiri, Fearless Voyager looks pretty good to me - card draw and creature protection are both useful things to have. Note that you'll draw multiple cards if you're attacking multiple opponents, which is pretty strong. Three mana is also a lot more castable than Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale. I would expect them to lean towards different decks though - Akiri wants cheaper equip costs to make the unequip ability less costly, while Syr Gwyn wants more expensive equip costs because of the discount.

Forsaken Monument looks solid for colorless decks. Also part of a mana doubler if you're really heavy on colorless sources, which seems potent.

I am foaming at the mouth over Lithoform Engine. It is going right into my Etali, Primal Storm deck since not only does it replace my Rings of Brighthearth, it gives me a second Strionic Resonator. More ChAOS! Mhuhaha!

Lithoform Engine is the obvious EDH bomb of the set
Skyclave Relic is the secret one
