I'm considering selling out of magic as much as i can. I mainly play for the social aspect, and with next year in doubt for getting together to play I may just sell what i can and reinvest that into another one of my hobbies.
I'm on a similar boat, specifically I own a cube that I've put a lot of time and love into. However, with the price of cards constantly climbing I can't in good conscious actually play it with anyone directly outside my immediate friend group since it'd be so easy for $100 bills to just walk off.

Magic's very inflated cost just doesn't stack up well to other board games. I mean I could own a Gaea's Cradle or a PS5. I could own Scalding Tarn or Terraforming Mars.

That being said, I have a friend who constantly sells and then rebuys his collection. If you're cashing out I'd be very very certain about it. I'm leaning towards selling everything but my 4-5 favorite EDH decks. I only play EDH and limited so most of my collection is useless anyway.

My collection is basically enough cards to build up to 5 EDH decks or 6 depending on colors, the one deck that wouldn't go would end up being thee dragon percon if i were to sell out.

I can relate. Personally having a baby has made it hard, but also pandemic, and actually most of all is just the absolutely blistering pace of releases from WotC this year has been absurd. Keeping up with set reviews for my primers and curating lists with recent changes let alone finding time to actually sleeve and desleeve cards has been a real challenge. There's at least one deck I've created, made multiple changes to and playtested a ton without even having a chance to post a list to Nexus.

And then along comes Legends, and I've got at least 2 commanders I'd be keen to brew, so we'll see once I crack my pack.

I remember when my son was young I definitely wasn't spending much time on hobbies, although I spent plenty of time in the middle of the night reading Salvation so I was a bit in the loop.

You're spot on about releases. This year has been complete insanity when it comes to assessing new cards and trying to update decks, not to mention any new commanders you might want to try out.

Honestly. I've been trying to clear my workload during working hours to create free time, it just doesn't exist outside of that. Kiddo is 6 months old so spare time just doesn't exist outside of working and in transit time. I have a couple days working remote so I can twiddle around, but it's like....an hour here or there every fortnight so it's slow going.

Regarding releases, surely they can't keep this pace up right? Player burnout is sure to happen, and content creators are struggling to keep up too. Personally my belt is pretty tight, any further releases I'm pretty much funding with trade ins where I can, so there's bound to be a lot of people just giving up altogether on keeping up. I may find myself in that situation eventually; at least in my situation most of my decklists are fixed enough that I'm really only after very specific things, so I don't really need to buy specific product. Legends was different though, been hyped for a while, and my wife is particularly tickled with the fact that our son appears in the set.

The amount of content does feel high for me but for me its more that like, I don't get to experience any of it and bam there is more stuff here. Covid has made my ability to play almost non existent to the point where if I play once every month and a half its apparently impressive. Playing one night per new product release isn't really great feeling.

I should be completely debt free as of the end of the month. Its kind of an odd feeling I am at the point where if I don't have any unusual expenses in a month I am living on just over half of what I make in a month. I should have roughly six months of expenses saved up and probably start investing for the long term beyond just what my company matches on a regular basis.

If I could bring myself to just be a hermit crab I could probably set myself up to retire after something like 15 - 20 years of that lol. Who needs to retire in their 50s though right? I guess this whole situation has gotten me fairly good at buckling down and not going out and spending as much money. We used to go out to see most new movies that didn't look half bad. We still eat out one day a week just for our sanity but thats just drive through or take out.

I'm currently in a game that a ciphered Whispering Madness resulted in 3 Archfiend of Ifnir triggers and 4 Teferi's Tutelage which was responded to by a Crop Rotation which was responded to by Role Reversal which was responded to with Yisan, the Wanderer Bard which was untapped with Quirion Ranger, and the Yisan, the Wanderer Bard was activated again which was responded to with Faerie Artisans.

There was also a Mana Geyser, flashbacked Cackling Counterpart, Drown in the Loch and Mimic Vat cast (Emergence Zone trigger for one of the players) somewhere in the Jenga stack. Yeva, Nature's Herald, Regal Force, Worldly Tutor.

Finally tally was a 45minute long damage step of combat. xD

I mean it gets incrementally harder to get on the hype train when it's rolling releases, imo. I've been hanging out for Legends, but everything else has been pretty overwhelming this year. The actual expense of the hobby, well, it's a different story for everyone I guess.

I feel the same way about my cube. I've been considering buying proxies (writing PROXY on the back with a sharpie to deface them) for all my expensive cards. More broadly, I also sometimes wonder if I should cash out.

How much of this is related to the whole pandemic/reduced socialisation/businesses closed I wonder? That might be a bit reductionist, but it's been a really unique year. Still, there's plenty of other reasons one might call it quits; increasing prices of playing, Hasbro and their (generally) capitalist management of WotC and the game, not enough spare time, and so on.

I've thought the same myself purely because I don't have a ton of spare time, but I refuse to let the mundanities of modern life interfere with my hobbies entirely, even if I only get a chance to engage with them once in a blue moon. I still have a seriously slamming bass rig that I haven't even plugged in for years, but one day soon I will and the whole neighborhood will vibrate.

For me, I would consider getting out if:

1) I need the money in a bad way.
2) I am no longer having fun with playing.
3) I feel that there is some other place I would rather spend my money.

I haven't found any of those to be a thing in the last 10 years. There was one point I was unemployed but it didn't get to the point of me selling things off. I have sold parts of my collection in the last 10 years but nothing more than like 1/5th of my collection at any point.

If i do sell out, I can redirect the money into my computer/gaming console or model building stuff (kits, paints etc) or board games (more ticket to ride) which i play with my family.

Historically I've always discouraged people from selling their collections because anyone I've ever known to do it eventually regrets it, but that was before prices reached their current level of absurdity AND a lot of people have lost their playgroups\stores. I'll probably never sell unless I'm in desperate need of money, but I totally understand why someone would.

I think that playing commander also changes things in a big way as far as selling collections. I remember selling off collections once or twice in the past before commander really caught on and when I have sold out of standard / modern things I really haven't regretted that because when you come back the format usually looks totally different. Sure some modern things stay the same (very few) but generally speaking the modern meta game shifts to the point that some decks that were viable no longer are due to new decks in the meta. Also..... modern is a hot mess.

I still remember selling out of standard for store credit and getting a tabernacle when it was $300. I did not ever regret that.

The pandemic has certainly put a strain on playing, but even before it i was only playing once a week at best, and it was effort to do that. It's mostly just knowing that my collection would easily fetch me plenty of thousands of dollars in a heartbeat and what I could do with that money.

Fair enough. To be honest, my collection probably isn't worth enough to make buying out a nice enough payout to offset losing a hobby. If I were ever strapped enough for cash to do it I would, but at this point I play significantly less than once a week and still enjoy the interaction I have, whether it be simply brewing or the banter here.

I started playing Magic around 15 years ago when I was still in highschool. I just don't nearly have the same amount of free time to through at it anymore. When my friends get together we only have time for 2-3 games as opposed to the 12 hour board game extravaganzas we used to have. That's time for a game of EDH and a different board game as opposed to 2-3 EDH games, a handful of different board games, some video games and a cube draft like we used to have. It has a lot more stringent competition for my time.

Magic the Gathering is great fun, but the enjoyment I get out of investing $50 on 1-5 cards is way lower than it would be if I spent that money on an entire new board game.

The prices of a lot of my cards spiking only makes me more wary of using them in the presence of strangers. I just don't feel safe taking my cube anywhere outside of my house that isn't explicitly to another friend's house that I trust. I used to just drag it around with me to local game stores to throw down with folks. All the cards in it used to be $2-$10 range and it seems like a lot of them have climbed up to $20-$50. Having grown up and having to pay bills has made me much more wary of losing a huge chunk of money that I've invested into it compared to my younger self.

I'm pretty wary about using my EDH decks with other people for similar reasons because how much commander becoming mainstream has inflated the value of my cards. I scoop to Scrambleverse because it's too easy for stuff to get lost when it resolves even if everyone is extremely trustworthy.

I can see scooping to Scrambleverse just because it's laborious, and I'm on the cusp of possibly building a donate deck. Still wouldn't run it.

Totally get it though; I get RL games in so rarely that for a lot of folk it just wouldn't be worth it. That being said, my wife and I play board games that rarely that they're probably not a great investment either. We've literally got a stack that we've never had the opportunity to trial. Usually when we have friends over they're also parents, so we have a pretty tight time limit, and we just play something we know we love, like Star Trek Catan or Discworld rather than try anything that has a learning curve that'll take the whole night out.

Gaming and MTG'ing are in the same boat for me - not enough time for either. I enjoy both when I do get to do them and I won't let the 9--5 grind win entirely, so I'll enjoy it when I can get it.

Yes I think it's definitely worth noting that there is a big different between selling off certain formats and completely being done with paper Magic. I couldn't bring myself to get rid of my Vintage or Legacy cards but I only played Standard for a few years and dodged Modern entirely.

I 100% scoop to Scrambleverse even with people I know and trust. I just don't feel like rolling dice to see who wins the game. In my opinion its one of the higher tiers of game griefing out there. I just chalk it up as someone one card comboing and not having interaction to stop it.

Its a miserable effect and I would rather see someone cast Jokulhaups with no follow up than to see Scrambleverse.

I bought a house and have been doing renovations. Money is tight and I look at my 20 EDH decks and countless more cards collected and wonder if I should sell.

I think I am resolved to sell 1-2 mana crypts. But I just don't know when. Don't feel comfortable mailing them and have no reason to go to an LGS.

I have started building cubes. I am currently sleeving my duplicate sealed. It is a great way to make use of cards that are just sitting around. Once I finish building them I think I will try to unload the unused cards. Less so for money - more just because it takes up too much space.

By the way - for those of you who are unable to go into a store to play (like me) because of the pandemic or children or whatever, my play group has been drafting sets virtually on a 3rd party site, then uploading the decklists to Arena, where they play out the games.

I realized you could expand on this idea and build an Arena cube, draft it on a 3rd party site, upload the decks to Arena. Think this is a great creative outlet, like deckbuilding, and gives a cheap way to play with friends.

I've got a ton of sealed product that I really, really want to draft with friends one day, and I steal away at least three packs of every new set for an eventual...something. Sealed stuff tends to hold value and is easier to unload. So if I'm ever in dire financial straits, that will be the first thing to go. I've got quite a few expensive staples that I'm not using, but I'm hobbled by the "What if I need it later" mentality. I need to get over that if I ever want to cash a lot of that stuff in.

I have been playing at my LGS though every two weeks. Proper mask usage is mandatory, hand sanitizer is at every table, and touching others' cards and decks is discouraged. I did put on gloves to resolve a Bribery recently, though.

Scrambleverse may be the single most miserable card to resolve in the history of Magic. Our group resolved it 1 time and everyone agreed to never play it again.

I would always just scoop if someone cast Scrambleverse. Life is too short for crap like that.

I was thinking about picking up the new precons when I go get my third box of legends, but thankfully I looked at the deckliss first. Man, these do not offer much value unless you are pretty new to the game. The Simic one, there's Avenger of Zendikar and Eternal Witness - two cards I can always use another copy of - and the commander.... and a bunch of crap I have more than ample supplies of. The Boros one, it's got a couple of strong cards, including Sunforger and Sigarda's Aid, but I don't need more copies of those, and I don't think I would ever even use the commander for that one, he's so freaking boring as a generic Boros commander. Unlike the Zen ones, these don't even contain Arcane Signet.

They do offer some good value for newer players or those with smaller collections, but these are very much "entrenched EDH players, don't bother."
I have 68 active EDH decks, with more in progress. I don't consider this a problem. Do you?
I am also one of those barbarians who enjoys winning by turning creatures sideways.
