I thought this was just a bad Ugin's Conjurant, but it actually has the phantom ability. Pretty good, but not super exciting.

For edh these are the only ways I can think of

• Citadel Siege
• Cathars' Crusade
• Archangel of Thune

And those are typical for any deck

It looks like they patched that clause in templating a while ago - Ugin's Conjurant and Undergrowth Champion only prevent the damage if there are counters to remove. Necessary for Undergrowth Champion (since it isn't a 0/0 base), but looks like they kept it. Personally, I'm more upset by the Oblivion Ring → Banishing Light change than I am by this change. Given the presence of Inspiring Veteran in the set, making an effectively immune-to-damage knight may have been too strong.

As for the card itself... it seems fine. Reasonably efficient, assuming there isn't a bunch of incidental damage flying around (Goblin Chainwhirler would make this a lot worse). Could see play in a knights aggro list, or monoblack aggro (if that becomes a thing). I don't think it is amazing, but if you can keep the path clear, 4 power for 3 mana is a solid rate.

Don't forget about Proliferate. There's a whole mechanic dedicated to giving you more of what you already have. There are also a bunch more +1/+1 counter cards like Dragon Blood and Daily Regimen, and too many more to name, and those are only the repeatable effects.
