MTG Hot Takes

What are some of your personal opinions about Magic that tend to be pretty controversial? Maybe you think that mana burn should come back, or that things were better off before "mythic-rare" was a thing. Maybe you have a radical design philosophy that you believe the R&D should move towards. Or maybe you think Magic as a whole would be better if they started printing crossover sets with Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon.

I'll start with this one: I welcome the death of local game stores. Buying singles online is cheap, easy, and doesn't require me to wait ages for a local shop to get the cards I need in stock. More importantly, I despise the kind of people and environment that these stores attract. I'd much rather hang out with friends and draft or play Commander at home where I don't have to be in a confined space with a bunch of sweaty dudes who haven't discovered soap yet. That's not even bringing up the rampant sexism and gate-keeping that makes just about any woman who steps foot in the place instantly uncomfortable. I understand that some people are very tied to their local store and have had great experiences there, and if that's the case I wish you nothing but the best. All I'm saying is that I won't be shedding any tears when the stores in my area finally bite the dust.

mine would be they put "any target" rule text on tarfire without printing a newer version of the card that says "any target on the text. Had to print the new text on it on paper, to show to players not familiar with the errata.

I don't think this really qualifies as a hot take :/

Sounds like you just have %$#% local stores mate, which does suck but maybe don't tar every LGS in existence with the same brush?

My hot take is that once a card rotates out of Standard then it should be legal to proxy it in all formats *or* I should be able to buy it as a single direct from Wizards.

You know Vintage proxies don't work the way you think they do. (Basically you have to prove you actually own the card in order to use a proxy.)

Anyway, I can't help but laugh at what people think is unfair and most of the time, it's a tier-2 deck.

Yeah but I think you shouldn't have to own the card, proxies should be fine in all eternal formats regardless of card ownership.

My hot takes:
  • The vast majority of people in game stores do not match the stereotype of unwashed neckbeards and people continuing to perpetuate that false stereotype are doing a massive disservice to Magic as a whole.
  • Most alters just destroy the card and it hurts to see something valuable treated like trash.
  • If you buy a card in a language you can't read and you don't know exactly what it does, that's incredibly rude to anyone you're playing with.

-The community has a part that seem to be only in magic to find stuff to complain about.

- The weatherlight saga imo is just as original and written as well as the current storyline, with the story hit or missing depending on the author and story arc. Also I don't see how coping superhero storylines is any more original then following Star Trek storylines.

-Innistrad is just as "copy and paste" as Theros/Amonkhet/Eldraine of the source material and tropes and people just didn't pick up on it as much.

-Eldraine needed the fairy tale tropes cuz the Arthur side is overdone not only in magic but in the wider fantasy genre.

- Wild west plane sounds horrible an I'd only tolerate it if we had Angrath as a featured/leading character.

-The walker color balance overall is a mess with many color and color combos needing more walkers and some color(s) that can just pause on the walker count.

-There isn't a conspiracy to keep out non-human walkers by saying they don't market as well, its been said in a number of media studies that the closer to a human something is the faster and easier we can identify and have empathy for.

Oh I totally agree. It sounds super cheesy. Angrath is a necessity if they ever go down that path, though! On discord a week or so ago, we were talking about if there were tropes in Westerns about deals with the devil and I had a wonderful image in my mind of Davriel wearing a cowboy hat.

- vanilla cards should not be created
- less functionally copied cards, more with original design
- less expansions with more depth (with no filler cards)
- stop making stronger creatures with same CMC (meaning P/T)
- make color pie great again :)

Unblockable should be a keyword.

Control mirrors are fun to watch and control is generally fun to play against. Control is a necessary part of the game

I enjoy seeing control on stream

I do also kind of enjoy seeing combo decks against each other on stream

Agreed, but I'd specifically prefer:
Invisible (This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with defender.)
It would make Walls a little more relevant in Limited and do away with completely uninteractive Phantom Warrior combat. And would make the effect sensible as a ub evergreen mechanic.

My hot take: Wish cards should work in unsanctioned games of Commander.

I don't play commander but I would hope in a casual game they would let you play wish effects if you want.

1CB (1 generic and two colored Mana, with at least one required to be black) is a strong but workable cost for a universal tutor with no drawbacks. With a minor drawback, say lose two life, it's completely fair.

Stone Rain is safe for standard and appropriately costed. LD needs to be revived, though as a dedicated strategy it should be fringe. Modern should be able to support an LD deck.

Planeswalkers have been detrimental to the game and have pushed out both large creatures as finishers, enchantments, and the necessity to gain card advantage and control the board through spells. They are either irrelevant, or they serve as a finisher, control piece, and CA machine all in one. This is integral to their nature, and there is no broad way to fix it, but it can be mitigated with smart designs and pushing the cards less, as well as making more cards that answer Planeswalkers at lower rarities and/or more universally playable at higher rarities, which is achievable while keeping to their current design rule by making more cards that remove counters as an effect.

One set per world is too few to adequately explore the worlds themes and mechanics. Each world should probably get two large sets, drafted separately, with the second exploring variations on the themes and mechanics the way small sets used to do. Dominaria and Throne have convinced me of this.

There should be a way to remove poison counters beyond leeches. Same for any counter a player gets.

White should be able to counter spells, however only via taxing or delaying, and it should be less efficient at it than blue. Black should also be able to counter spells, but more rarely than white and at the cost of life.

Hexproof should never appear on anything less than 4 Mana.

Copy Cat and Exarch Twin are fine in modern. Banning Splinter Twin was a mistake.

The increased frequency of standard bannings is a sign that R&D is more likely to admit mistakes than in the past, but also more likely to make mistakes in the first place.

to me, the WAR planeswalkers were the first interesting planeswalkers. sorta regrettable that Teferi and Narset from that cycle are too good because it's the first time I've wanted to embrace the card type. (i don't play competitive or anything near top-tier so me entirely forgoing them has not been a problem lol)

effects like Armageddon and Control Magic are balanced, fair and not worth complaining about, no matter how casual your play group is. It's creatures and lands which are too good >:)

my main format is Commander/EDH but I usually avoid the cards which actually say the word "commander" on them cos it just feels a bit too much; this is probably indie punk whining but I preferred not being a demographic! a lot of the recent legendary creatures they've printed have been a little much, like Kethis, Morophon, and Chulane who all provide way too much for doing what you were already gonna do, and Golos is just straight up too good - yet again I'd prefer they designed legendary creatures in main sets as if Commander did not exist.

Wizards should open its own Magic singles online store.

The pro tour should have a "kids" age group.

Collector edition cards should be legal for competitive play.

Ever since tansform cards have come out the whole "standard cardbacks only" argument is dead to me.

But what about the corners?

What if they were cut? I pulled. Gisharth with square corners, would that be considered illegal to play with even though it's from wizards themselves?

Just some things I've been thinking about.

Standard should be powered down a bit in order to allow more fringe strategies, midrange decks and high-cmc cards to be more viable.

Mana-fixing lands should only be printed at worst at uncommon and utility lands at worst at rare. All players need lands and the manabase should never be the most expensive part of a deck.

WotC should bring back unique art styles into standard products instead of pushing it away into promos, ancillary products and deluxe products only.

The playable brawl cards are quite cheap right now. I feel like given a few years the brawl only cards might be a pain as far as prices go. I am not really sure where they are at on if there are more but the brawl decks product was very low print run only slightly saved by the foil promo packs also including them.

The ones that stand out to me would be the legends, signet, and Tome of Legends. Tome might not seem huge but its really good for card draw light colors and strategies and its current price tag is almost nothing.

I'm not sure this is a hot take, but I reckon Amonkhet is the best designed block M:TG has ever witnessed. the commons are bustling with interesting mechanics (Embalm especially is an exciting way to make almost-vanilla creatures which still offer meaningful choices) and the split-cards which suggest deck archetypes play very well. Not many of the cards are OP to the point of blanking the set and the ones that are (various cards with God or Planeswalker written on them lol) have tough prerequisites and can't just be shoved into any deck. With a cube made out of AKH/HOU commons and uncommons you'll have a balanced game every time and the amount of Cycling in the set usually lets you happily play three colours in a way that's totally different to the way Ravnica allows. Finally, it's a low price block with not many ten dollar cards so it's still not a huge problem to collect! just a very well-judged period of M:TG, even if you don't like zombie decks.

Hot Take: At least the Urza storyline only took 17 sets to tell a whole story, unlike the Nicol Bolas storyline with the planeswalkers which took 39 sets.

Hotter Take: Ravnica went from an interesting slavic plane to a boring plane that became more generic everytime we revisited it.

Hottest Take: Venser is the best character.

I agree with all of these.

Here's one of my own:
Some people were unusually angry about Oko, Once Upon a Time, and Veil of Summer just because they were green. Some people think that green should never be good and/or that cards that powerful should always be blue.

I don't really think this is an hot take, just something that everyone who knows a little about lore or played the first Ravnica knows.

My hot take: planeswalker are extremely unfun, they never improve a game. If you want to be happy and have fun, take away all planeswalkers from your deck.

Hot take: Phyrexians went from the most intimidating and threatening force to the least because of the mending. As unless they somehow build a functioning planar portal or are given one in a post-mending universe, they really can't invade anywhere. So while Mirrodin is very much screwed, no other plane is, aside from that one that Elspeth's from which we still don't know of. Can't even compleat planeswalkers, so another interesting possible plot point out the window. Its like playing one of those games where you start in the best location to spread an illness, but everywhere already closed their borders.
