I would say that the stuff from 2014-2015 is when they really got the current storylines started -- that gives you KTK block, which introduces Ugin and (re)re-introduces Bolas as a villain as well as Magic Origins which gives you the backstories for the Gatewatch. It also is all online on the Mothership so you should be able to read it without having to worry about finding old books. There is definitely relevant stuff that happened before that -- Eldrazi freed in original Zendikar block, the battle for Mirrodin in Scars block, honestly not that much other than world-building in original Innistrad, Jace becoming the Living Guildpact in RTR, Elspeth's "death" in original Theros -- but I think KTK and Origins will give you most of the building blocks for the current state of affairs.

id start with time spiral, others would agree, it gives a great synapsis of some old characters (to which you could research) as well as new characters though most are "old"

have to read the brothers war

the weatherlight saga after that

and everything @slimytrout said

There's all sorts of Lore stuff on MtGSalvation. The actual MtG Wikia is crap. There's also the Stories on the Wizards of the Coast Site, but it's mostly stuff revolving around newer Sets. shareit vidmate app
