A take on Chainer and his goggles

So Chainer has goggles which—naturally—we never see him wearing. Which made me want to make a card that made his goggles important.

Chainer enters the battlefield with a goggles counter on it.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a goggles counter on another target creature.
XBR, T, Pay X life: Create an X/X black Nightmare creature token. It deals damage equal to its power to each non-Nightmare creature without a goggles counter on it.

I have a request for feedback on one aspect in particular: does the upkeep trigger feel an appropriate way to dispense goggles, or would managing them another way be more appropriate in these colors given the card's behaviour?

I love the flavor behind this card!

That said, I agree I'm unsure on it being an upkeep trigger - perhaps an "opponent's creature dies" type trigger would be more in color?
