Tiering

This thread is for constructive information-based discussion of which decks are most competitive. This head post may end up containing a tier list also.

Post-release of Eldraine, it is too soon to state anything definitive about the meta, but I will put something in here as a placeholder.

We have three tournaments that are really too small, in addition to being premature: Fandom Legends, Fandom Caster's Cup and MPL Eldraine Split Sapphire Division 30/09/19.

Competitively, the finalists in all the tournaments should be considered.
  • Esper Stax
  • Bant Ramp
  • Bant Golos
  • Simic Aggro (though it doesn't look like aggro to me)
  • Selesnya Adventure

What about Cavalcade? That seems to be getting some attention. Or has it just not posted any real results yet?

Torbran seems like a great pickup for the deck. There was talk about it. It's too soon and I have no real idea. This thread is meant to be about objective data, so I am reluctant to bring these things up, but here goes.

I think it may be significant that nobody has brought it to the small select tournaments so far. Aaron Barich at HardcastMtg (who I expect to understand competitive red decks) was not high on it. Also damning is that I see nothing on r/spikes. Is it more than a budget bo1 grinder?

Star City Philadelphia will give us some real data, particularly the Classic on Sunday. You can be sure some people will bring a good version. If it's good, somebody will post a good finish. If they do, I will be only too glad to include it. I ran a budget version myself for some Arena grinding and it seemed fine, but there definitely some games that I just didn't get traction.

The relevant tournaments from the weekend seem to be SCG Philadelphia Open, SCG Philadelphia Standard Classic and Fandom Legends 10/3.

While the Philadelphia Open was a flood of various Golos Field of the Dead decks, The other tournaments sported greater diversity.
Based on that result, I think the following decks are competitive in bo3:
  • Golos Field of the Dead
  • GW Adventure Aggro
  • Bant Ramp
  • Jeskai Superfriends Fires
  • GB Midrange
  • Simic Flash
While I am tempted to say that the various Golos Field deck are tier 1 by themselves, I fear such a judgement would be premature. I am inclined to say that Esper Stax and Mono-Red (Cavalcade or otherwise) are on the bubble competitively.

This week we have results from the Fandom Legends 10/10, SCG Classic Indianapolis, a PTQ and 3 Standard IQs. Oh yeah, and decklists for MC5. Although MC5 hasn't happened yet and the decklists are actually somewhat dated, the testing effort that went into their creation seems significant.
The critical consensus seems to be that Golos Field is Tier 1 by itself (maybe Tier 0), but some other decks seem to also be placing in the actual tournaments.
Here is a list of the decks with top tournament finishes this week:
  • Golos Field (I am resisting separating Bant Golos, Sultai Golos and Golos Fires for now)
  • Gruul Aggro
  • Mono-Red Aggro
  • Golgari Adventures
  • Jeskai Superfriends Fires
Showing well, but not as prominently:
  • Blue Dredge
  • Boros Knights
  • Simic Flash
  • Dimir Control

Two GPs this past weekend:
  • GP Lyon: Top 8: 3 Sultai Food/Ramp/Midrange, 2 Bant Food/Ramp/Midrange, 2 Sacrifice, 1 UW Control. Top 16 includes 2 Temur Reclamation
  • GP Nagoya: Simic Food/Ramp/Midrange at 1st and 3rd, 1 UW Control, 1 Bant Food/Ramp/Midrange and 4 Sultai Food/Ramp/Midrange make up the top 8. Is Aether Gust better than Noxious Grasp?

That didn't take long. After the Monday bannings of Oko, Thief of Crowns, Once upon a time and Veil of summer, we have our first read on the new meta with the Twitch Rivals tournament. While it is early days, tournament entry was not strictly based on competitiveness and the field was only 256, threads covering any of the decks in the top 16 seem appropriate for the Competitive Decks subforum at this time.
  • Golgari Adventures
  • Bxx Sacrifice (when this thread gets too much traffic, we can worry about further subdivisions)
  • Jeskai Fires
  • Izzet Phoenix
  • UGx Ramp
  • Izzet Flash
  • Rakdos Embercleave Knights
  • Temur Reclamation
