Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

"As with the last update, Modern continues to be in a healthy spot, with plenty of different viable archetypes and a relatively flat spread among the top decks' metagame shares. Izzet Murktide is currently the most popular archetype in competitive play, but not by a large margin, and the deck i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

IMO Ragavan just has to go ASAP. If I don't buy the monkey then I can't compete, but if I do buy the monkey it has a high chance of getting banned and i lose $300. So I either risk $300, don't be competitive, or I leave the format until it's determined to be safe or ban worthy which could take an u...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

@ Metalmusic My LGS decided to get rid of Modern and replace it with proxy Legacy some time ago due to popular demand. It is doing decent averaging 15 player every Wednesday evening. Standard hasn't launched in months. Pioneer has the most attendance. Rest is draft, Commander, pauper and there are e...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I took a look at the Modern top8's for the past 2 weeks. 50% consists of UR, the rest of the usual suspects. The meta is completely solved. It is quite obvious something needs to happen. Forsythe was head designer for MH2. If they end up doing the right thing by banning Ragavan, W6, Saga and Fury I ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Maybe they will look for ways to nerf the top 3-4 decks without hitting MH cards to decrease the gap between tier 1 and the rest until LOTR drops. - Ban Expressive Iteration (hits 4/5c, Creativity and UR) - Ban Sigarda's Aid (only hits Hammertime) These bans would merely serve as temporary band aid....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

You can't just ban Ragavan (or W6/Saga for that matter) alone. It would slow down the format so W6 and Saga would take over completely because they eat Ragavan's metashare. Ragavan might be keeping linear non-interactive decks like Tron out of the meta, but I fee they have fallen out of favor anyway...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

After giving it some thought I don't think they will ban anything either. The data is clearly saying for over a year now that Ragavan is broken. Like who would have thought right. The problem is, if they ban Ragavan they must ban other stuff as well to level out the playing field. It will create a d...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

David posted two great articles on Modernnexus. The state of Modern 2022 and the ban watchlist. He basically confirms with data almost everything I have been feeling and saying about the format the past 6 months. - According to him W6 is not a problem yet when it comes to diversity, however it is pr...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It was pretty much set in stone nothing would change until January. I am curious to see what they will do. Modern has been a 3-4 deck format for the past 6 months now. It is clear something needs to happen to break open the meta and reduce the impact of MH2. I am expecting announcements in the follo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

There is a lof of outrage towards MH2 but most people have accepted things are what they are and moved on. Speaking of myself I am tired of bashing Modern. I basically stopped playing the format 2 years ago, except very exceptional occasions I play an FNM, because I didn't like the direction they we...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The meta isn't bad in the sense that it has a Hogaak or Eye of Ugin wrecking the format. But cards like Wrenn and Six (and others) remind me of Deathrite Shaman before its ban in legacy. If Wrenn stays legal then DRS should be unbanned. DRS could even be a counter to Wrenn. The meta is stale and bo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The main problem with Modern is how extremely efficient and streamlined every deck has become. Too many decks are playing Wrenn and T3feri in the same deck, combined with efficient removal like Binding, Bolt, Ending. Slam some free spells like FoN, Elementals, perhaps a companion and its just too mu...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Banning Yorion is the smallest step they could take to nerf 4/5c soup. Good thing is the deck is on their radar. W6 is unsustainable. The more cards are released, the better he gets because he glues all the best cards into 1 pile. I feel like they will ban Omnath before banning W6 though. Problems y...

Long term solution is to redefine Modern into No Reserved List Legacy and turn Pioneer into Horizonless Modern.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think there are also problems not related to Modern alone: #1: Wallet fatigue Lots of people lost a lot of money during covid. In Europe we are looking at 10%+ inflation. Add up the energy crisis and card board rectangles are the last thing you want to spend money on. The people who still have mon...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Tomorrow supposedly there is the biggest Modern tournament of the year in the Netherlands. I used to go every year. Overal attendance was always between 200-300 players. This time I am not bothered to go. None of my friends are going neither. They only have around 40 registrations so far. Modern is ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

My LGS dropped Modern a few weeks ago because attendance had declined over the past months to the point there weren't even 8 players any more while there just to be 20-30. Pioneer took the spot. Modern turning into Horizons block has turned many people off in my area. It is the most heard argument a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Goodbye Lurrus you won't be missed. "Lurrus's play rate (31% in Magic Online League decks that started with four wins) points to a card that is contributing to the homogenization of the Modern play experience." If anything is homogenizing the format its W6. And what about Saga being slamme...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

What would you do to have a potentially all right meta? This is the problem. I don't know. If you look at the data the format might be in a really good spot but I don't like what cards like Ragavan, Saga, Wrenn, Companions etc have done to it. Maybe they are now the new pillars of Modern and we hav...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern feels pretty solved. The bar for cards to be considered playable has risen a lot. It is hard to brew when Ragavan is by far the best 1 drop, when Saga creates so much value on its own and when you can smash all cards into money.deck and call it a day. It doesn't leave many windows of opportun...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It is pretty clear at this point something has to and will be done about companions. Maybe they will get another errata increasing the cost to 5 mana, maybe the mechanic is banned all together but the cards are not or maybe just ban both Lurrus and Yorick etc. My feeling is that they are trying to f...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

To me it feels like they are always pushing some unbalanced things to artificially shake things up and that is exactly what I don't enjoy about Modern. They went to far with the powerlevel in MH2 to turn it into a cash grab. If I want to play Modern competitively again after 2 years I need to spend ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern feels in a very weird spot. MH2 powercreeped the format even more to a point people call it "Horizons block'. The powerlevel of Standard has gone down thus it will be very hard for new cards to make an impact in Modern which in turn will make the format even more stale. There isn't a sin...
