Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

numbers like that make me surprised scam didn't see a ban a few weeks ago. I enjoy modern a lot but those numbers are crazy I suspect they care less about Modern's health than avoiding banning newer cards, especially ones supposedly designed for Modern, like Modern Horizons 2 stuff, or printed dire...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think Modern was slowly dying without something like Horizons, because only certain kinds of Modern power level cards were being printed in Standard, and it was slowly warping the format and killing typical archetypes in a way that was making Modern less fun over time. Something like Horizons was ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Well people moaned for years about things being not interactive, now they moan about the elementals, that by and large interact with their opponent's stuff and are everywhere. We used to have permanents that some decks can't hit, now because people "want to play" it doesn't matter a rat's...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Forgive my stupidity, but what would it do giving them split second? as in split second instead of evoke? I thought split second was a kinda of hyper-instant? It would prevent them from flickering to maintain the evoke critter, because it would stop new stuff from entering the stack before they are...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The meta is really diverse right now, at least by WotC's normal metrics, it doesn't look healthy if you look at the decks themselves, and how well more reasonable decks can do in this meta. I think there has been serious problems with recent card design in terms of the health of various formats. Too...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

My LGS dropped Modern a few weeks ago because attendance had declined over the past months to the point there weren't even 8 players any more while there just to be 20-30. Pioneer took the spot. Modern turning into Horizons block has turned many people off in my area. It is the most heard argument ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Yeah, the whole model they have with each card having 3-4 different special edition versions is rather off putting to me. But those lands do look cool hehe. I think WotC has figured out that the collectors make them the most money, but that the collectors don't collect regardless of how good the ga...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

tl;dr For those who are asking for bans, are you asking for them because a deck(s) are truly broken, or is it because the meta in your opinion does not appear to be evolving quickly enough to avoid stagnation? If the latter, about how long should a meta remain the same (i.e. T1 decks barely change ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

This werewolf set is looking extremely weak when it comes to cards that would be good in modern. But what cards would modern like to see right now anyway? More common and uncommon options that are close enough to rare or mythic staples to help players build budget decks that are still relatively co...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I, reasonably, am waiting for more details than one or two artist shots and a descriptive blurb before making my final opinion. The story from Kamigawa was pretty decent overall and seeing how the plane is both different and the same after such a long time will be interesting. While some people jus...

Re: [Magic Legends]And.... It's dead. Shutting down Oct. 31st.

Honestly, what we got wasn't the best way to go about things. They could have done some seriously cool things with a magic video game that isn't a card game. For a Diablo-esque thing, here is something along the lines of how I'd have suggested they do it: You don't have cards or decks, nor any sort ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It is driven by data, the data just happens to be popular metagame balance, rather than deck performance. Even if a deck isn't dominant, they don't want it to be too much more common than other decks in the same archetype or take up a large metagame share, even if the deck isn't actually doing anyth...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

DCI or apps, I don't care either way. I live the most un-interesting, un-important and most worthless life on the planet, so if somebody wants to look at my data, go ahead and waste your time lol. Wouldn't that make you the exact sort of person intelligence agencies would want to recruit as a secre...

Continued legality of random card packs into the future?

Something I've been thinking a bit about recently is wondering if random card packs will be something WotC will continue being allowed to make into the future. Some reasons I could see them getting in trouble include: * complex legal issues related to investors starting to invest more in magic cards...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Wasn't the main cited issue with Twin that they thought it was keeping other UR strategies from seeing daylight, and thus 'reducing diversity' but what played out instead was that even without twin, those strategies generally just sucked, or wound up banworthy themselves related to the faithless loo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Dress Down seems potentially useful! Although of course it won't help against turn 1 no mana cost evoke creatures, nor against already triggered abilities or abilities triggered in response to it being cast... :unamused: It's more against static abilities I think, for the turn. Edit: Updated card n...

Re: Print this Wizards (so we can play it in Modern)

With Modern Horizons 2 on the way, I'd like to list some card ideas I'd like to see (some of them might be pared down versions of cards that I'd hope to see, but I'm not certain wizards would print into Modern). Spell Smothering uu Instant Counter target spell with converted mana cost 3 or less. (I'...
