Re: Sheldon's throwaway comment about banning wheels
I really don't understand what's the fuss about banning Hullbreacher . He can always just be flashed in order to punish another player wheeling or drawing a huge amount of cards. That is the problem. Wheels inherently aren't an issue; wheels used offensively - as with Hullbreacher - are. It's easy ...

Re: Restrictive Mana Costs Cloaking Effect of Problematic Cards
Today the impression I get is that the general metric they think about is "What percentage of games played does this card crap on?" I have 3 tests. That's one. 2 is "How badly does it crap on it?" 3 is "How big is the blast radius to fix it?" (these are basically the 3...

Re: Devoid & Characteristic Defining Abilities in Color Identity
I'll talk to the gang about it. We want to keep those rules as simple as possible, and we don't have a lot of evidence of people being confused (the people who ask about it tend to come with CR citations!), but there's always room for improvement.

Re: Devoid & Characteristic Defining Abilities in Color Identity
The rules on the mtgcommander website are not intended to be comprehensive; they are speaking to people who want to get up and running, similar to the Magic Basic Rulebook. It also doesn't discuss the back sides of cards counting, for example; these are things that don't really come up until you get...

The best thing about the random all-caps is that it makes you just naturally read it in Shatner voice. Might benefit from a few more periods to really drive it home.

Re: Why Wizards of the Coast Has No Real Competitive Answer to EDH / Commander
The answer to the question in the title is largely "because they have no interest in one". Commander is valuable to Wizards because it has pulled in an enormous audience they weren't able to connect with before, not because it opens the door to other formats. They're super-happy having lot...

Re: Comp. Rule 903.11 vs. Commander Rule 11
There is no contradiction. 903.11 provides restrictions on the scope for a Companion while also giving more framework for groups who want to change the definition of Rule 11 to suit their needs. However, 903.11 clearly states that it is only relevant if you have made this decision (or are using a co...

I'm curious how people who are worried about Companion and the 100-card rule feel about Relentless Rats and the singleton rule. If you feel differently there, why?

Re: [MCD] Companions are horrible.
I am not too concerned here. Commander has a couple advantages that (Lutri aside) make it a lot more resilient to companion impact. One is the mere existence of the Commander. That's already baked into the format, and adding another, weaker Commander is not nearly the same delta as adding a Commande...

Re: Ban List Update - Flash Banned
The problem with this whole argument is the assumption that cEDH occupies some end-of-history paradigm that all EDH players are slowly moving towards. Because they are. The only ones who don't are contrarians who actively move against the grain. Even a casual player is just simply tuning their deck...

Re: "From outside the game" -- But not a 'Wish'
The reason that they don't start in the Command Zone is that there's no reason for them to. It's just extra rules. They work exactly how Wizards wants them to without having to talk about random zones. Making our lives slightly easier is way down on the list of things that are (or should be) taken i...

OK, straw poll time. What is the total number of added words + deleted words that I had to do to the rules on the Commander page to make Companion work the way we wanted it to? Answer on the 20th ;) Nah, everybody just wants to whine about how wizards is twisting the RCs arm to turn the commander r...

Re: [Speculation] Ban List Update Prediction Thread
Then, the voice of the RC goes out and says that you all simply don't change the rules for corner cases. Can you explain how this change for a corner case (singular mechanic) doesn't violate the statement that you don't make changes for corner cases? Easy. A new mechanic is not a corner case. Furth...

Re: [Speculation] Ban List Update Prediction Thread
Companion may very well add new design space for decks. However, I don't think a change for a corner case (that is, allowing the companion mechanic to work in commander) is appropriate to allow that new design space to function in commander. There's a world of difference between adding a rule to Co...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned
If the claim you are referring to is "Wizards printed Lutri KNOWING he would be banned," then I don't think you'll find a source. If the claim is slightly modified to "Wizards printed Lutri EXPECTING he would be banned," then yes, most definitely. At no point was Lutri intended f...

There's really not a lot of difference between these things being exiled and these things being put in the Command Zone, so I doubt this is a corner that needs addressing.

<snip> I guess I don't remember anyone caring about Shaman. I certainly didn't when it was announced. We had lots of calls to insta-ban it when it was revealed. There's a card or two in every set where this happens. They're always fine. Maybe this will be the exception, but I know where my money wo...

Re: "From outside the game" -- But not a 'Wish'
The question is, can the rules be adjusted to allow companions and not wishes, bearing in mind this is a rules committee that has abstained from messy rules that would ban off color fetches? Yes. 3) Does anyone seriously care about the 100 card maximum rule? The fact that quite a number of people h...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned
Partner is also a pretty bad example, since that's simply WotC struggling to make 4-color commanders, for which the clamor was overwhelming. If they wanted to exert control, they'd exert control. It would be relatively simple for them. They prefer to let us keep on doing that thing we do that has ma...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned
It makes absolutely zero sense that, in competitive formats, Companion cards go into the sideboard, where wishes are supposed to work , yet in Commander, they are allowed outside your collection, where wishes do not work ? This is neither flavorful, elegant or coherent, and opens a terrible precede...

Re: [MCD] Cards that would not see much play in present-day EDH
Rule 0 had handled Iona easily in every community I've ever been and I have heard from basically no one who said anything to the contrary. I think there was a fair bit more Iona play than you believe. One of the reasons that we took so long to ban it was that we really hoped that social pressure wo...
