Re: A Deck without Tutors

I don't really play non-basic-land tutors, preferring to build on draw and effect redundancy. This has affected my philosophy in the sense that I steer away from decks with singular wincons, much preferring to build incremental snowballs of doom of some sort. A *lot* of my decks can be loosely descr...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I wonder if the feeling I have is the same I had back when Time Spiral was new and I had been playing Magic for a year - tons of references to stuff I have no idea about. I only really know about DnD via popcultural osmosis.

Not looking like my sort of set.

Re: Problem Commanders: Do You Play Them?

By way my deckcrafting brain works and my love for going down the unbeaten path, I tend to avoid commanders that are bonus and payoff in the same package. I also like having access to my commander for whatever my plan is, and "kill-on-sight" is a good way to make sure that doesn't really h...

Re: Which Planar Factions Do You Identify With? [Guilds, Wedges, etc.]

I alternate between flavor/aesthetics and mechanical appeal a lot, where the ideals are of course intersections of the two. Ravnican Guild: Golgari [sym=b][sym=g] The cycle of life and death. Attrition is a playstyle I love a lot, and the undercity-dwelling "use what others won't to gain power&...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Beledros is going to be a new home for 'Golgari/B/G pet cards that didn't fit any other deck', since all build-around Beledros really needs is a more-than-average pile of ramp, and cards that care about creatures which is... a very hefty chunk of cards in that color combo. Conveniently, I also don't...

Re: Super long turns?

I sometimes pick up my sketchbook and start drawing. Does somewhat get the message across, though some do take it as a free ticket to continue durdling since I 'don't care'. Though I've also legit just gone to buy a drink (if playing at a store) or go to the bathroom; "holler if something affec...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The Signets

One of the few cards I allow myself leeway from the 'try to only have any card in only one deck' plan. If you're not on another sort of ramp plan, these are very much up there as some of the best rocks to have. Of course also that T1 Sol Ring → Signet is almost ubiquitously infamous, as well. Also, ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Mulldrifter

I think I am only playing Mulldrifter anymore in my Omnath(3.0) because elemental and ETB, anymore.

I do like the card a lot though, but it wants some combination of beneficial circumstances to pull above.

Re: Quick shoutout for some good designs (imo)

I agree on the notion that at least some of the folks in there designing this stuff are starting to grasp where the line rides between 'interesting to build with' and 'generates value off of doing anything at all'. I found myself at least giving some thought to a lot of the legendaries that have com...

Re: Have you ever forgotten how to pilot your deck?

For me it's more of 'I didn't remember I had this card in here', followed by 'WHY do I have this card in here?'

Though I do occasionally forget how to pilot my piles too.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Crucible of Worlds

I think I play Crucible in three decks, and all three have significant self-mill and/or lands-matter capabilities. Could play more, certainly, but that price is a touch too salty for that.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Might have to consider Fungal Rebirth in Thromok, since the deck generally doesn't want to spend much deck estate for recursion, but this one comes with tokens so it's easier to slide in.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The thing with 'mill' is that... it's so ingrained in player lexicon that even if another keyword was used... it wouldn't be used. People would still say 'mill', more than likely. (Case in point, the above-linked article talking about the history of mill... is from ten years ago.) "Forget you f...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I kind of really want to build Rin and Seri, Inseparable because that art (and probably the tokens for it) are adorable... but it's going to be pretty tricky finding a build that isn't a.) very Commander-reliant and b.) pretty linear on top of that. Most Hounds aren't much to shake at even if you ad...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Barrier Breach

People may not play a lot of enchantments, but I've found that a lot of enchantments people DO play are cards they're really fond of and will try to get back. Exiling stuff is good in our world of nigh-permanent recursion. Cycling tides it over nicely in the occasional case it's useless. Pretty play...

Re: Double Masters Set

Odds are I'll buy singles if something strikes my fancy, and the occasional 'support my LGS since I'm playing here today, see if I get lucky' booster. That's generally been my go-to with these sets.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Sphinx of Lost Truths

If this was 'pick three from the top six, grave the rest' this would make the cut in Sidisi. Alas, that deck wants to actually mill, and not just draw-discard. ...and curiously, my decks that want the draw-discard don't seem to be very blue. Hmm. The kicker puts it in high enough total cast (unless ...

Re: [SCD] Reliquary Tower

I probably have more decks than can abuse discarding from over the seven than I have decks that would benefit from keeping the extra. I just don't have a lot of decks that end up with over seven that often, given my penchant for making incremental snowball engines that want to churn through a lot of...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Overabundance

It's a mana doubler that's balanced... until you also have more mana doublers that affect only you. Pretty great thing in a big, BIG mana kind of deck that attempts to make every land tap for at least four.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Harrow

I've occasionally ran it, although with the number of decks I run it's just one more 'pretty efficient ramp/fix' spell, should my deck be on the lookout for one. If I find a Cultivate first, that gets the spot, that sort of thing. Most decks have fairly limited use of the 'side effects' of being ins...

Re: The Right Level of Commander Reliancy

Something I've also started to do lately is doing a commander that traditionally seems like it'd be the lynchpin of the deck... and then merely make it one more cog in the machine. As mentioned above, my Yidris is 'pretty much there for the colors', a red herring that's a cool thing with really nast...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Stonehoof Chieftain

I have this guy on the potential list for one deck: Polukranos, Unchained . The deck has a subtheme of playing some well-protected Really Big Beaters as a bit of a plan B (and because I like some big dumb beaters, natch), and this one is nice enough to give trample to Polukranos as well. Granted, th...

Re: The Right Level of Commander Reliancy

Brion actually is not hugely a posterchild of this problem(though it did have difficulties doing much if Brion wasn't around), and actually that deck's problem was being one of the most boring, linear things I recall building. Though that was also years and years ago so might be worth another gander...

Re: The Right Level of Commander Reliancy

Sounds like more haste will solve some of your problems, and Red has a ton of that, like the new Footfall Crater which can cycle if unneeded. Haste does help (in Atla's case) ensure at least one egg comes out - and the deck has some outlets - but for any lasting impact you still sort of want Atla t...

The Right Level of Commander Reliancy

Or, "how I am thinking of taking apart yet another tap-ability commander because the deck is very reliant on having my commander around". Atla Palani, Nest Tender . Great flavor, great art, in theory pretty cool set of mechanics, ended up promoting a deck design that utterly falls to piece...
