Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I'm amazed that there are still people defending faithless looting. I get it sucks to have your deck banned but its not like the ban came out of no where. you would think modern players would be used to format defining cards being banned by now. given the recent tournament results post b&r updat...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

if once upon a time is what we think it is, it makes gsz being banned even more ridiculous. I'm a little disheartened seeing wizards push another free spell.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

how we know that storm hasn't just evolved into twiddle storm? it's also a little early to be assigning tiers in this brand new modern.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

what does unbaning preordain do for the format? to me there is zero upside. it's not gonna create any new decks or bring back ones that have fallen out of favor. I just cant get behind it when are much better unban candidates

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

well said, when discussing unbaning one should ask what are the incentives, what's the ideal scenario and what are the risks? this is why we had such a clamoring for a sfm unban. gsz checks all these boxes too which is why it is now getting more of a push to be unbanned

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I have a hard time seeing any upside for unbaning preordain. what's the incentive? it won't enable more decks, and makes already good or problematic decks more consistent. it just doesn't make any sense to unban preordain before cards that can actually create a more diverse meta such as gsz.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

how is gsz enabling more combo decks? gsz is much less combo focused than all the other creature tutors in modern. I would put my money on gsz making decks less linear and more interactive as it helps find answer cards such as gaddock teeg. elves in modern is not like elves in legacy, let's be real ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

hopefully in the next round of bannings they give us a unban. gsz, punishing fire or twin seem like the most likely candidates. it has been very refreshing to play modern since the update. plenty of back and forth games, fewer games end pre turn 4 and anecdotally I have seen more strategic diversity...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

this was a fantastic b&r update. I'm glad wotc acknowledged that the format was too focused on the graveyard and they couldnt just do a conservative ban. this was a great first step toward fixing the formats issues and building good will with the player base. hopefully we get some more unbans in...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I don't see how discussing moderns issues will solve moderns issues to the point where those who are critical of it will actually enjoy it. wotc has had literal years to fix modern and let's be honest they dont have an real incentive to aside from blatant mistakes like eldrazi winter. I have already...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

cockatrice and free form on mtgo are decent options to play this theoretical modern format online would definitely need some people to moderate and organize it

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

for sure but you have to start somewhere and the way you do that is to play games, make adjustments then play more games. I'm under no assumption that it will take off but it is doable with a small community effort

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I agree that getting people into a psuedo modern format would be difficult. the best way would be to show people the games it produces compared to the current format. it doesn't have to be some radically different format but rather modern with a different banned list. my sign comment was more of a j...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

you can do something about it though. we aren't obligated to play wotc's version of modern. we could Just make our own psuedo modern. signs outside of wotc hq may also be effective

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

why are people so eager to believe what wotc says and then believe that they are competent when it comes to managing modern? I mean just recently they made a modern specific set which broke the format. we should be extremely critical of them given their poor track record over the past few years. I g...

at this point I can get behind a drs unban, although gsz and twin would do more good

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

you can ban cards like looting and stirring and not have a format dominated by midrange and control. it's not one or the other, it's not a race to the bottom. has the bar really been lowered so far that we have Stockholm syndrome and should just be happy to have a broken format

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I hate that faithless looting is becoming moderns brainstorm. a big reason I got into modern was wizards originally wasn't going to give the format the same passes they do legacy. at least brainstorm doesn't homogenize a bunch of deck into graveyard aggro. faithless looting does not promote nearly a...

if the format needs more police decks then we need incentivise people to play them. you do this by unbaning twin and gsz.

what I would do to fix modern

ban: hogaak and faithless looting

unban: stoneforge mystic, green suns zenith and splinter twin.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

the turn 4 rule is incredibly arbitrary. phoenix, and hogaak can and do win before turn 4, we just dont know if they do it "too much" because wotc wont be forthright with the turn 4 rule leaving us to speculate or worse make inferences based on what they put into b and r updates

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

even if w6 is homogenizing midrange into jund (which I personally doubt), midrange has bigger issues in the format. having decks like tron and dredge being top tier just punishes midrange on a fundamental level. having cards like sfm and gsz banned also limits what midrange decks show up.
