Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Samwise the Stouthearted

Being able to hit fetchlands or whatever makes him reasonably flexible I guess, but unless you're really interested in ring tempts I can't imagine running him. So I guess Frodo, Sauron's Bane ? Looking on EDHrec I called the most popular, but he is seeing a decent amount of play in other decks too, ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Gisa, the Hellraiser seems like a fun mono-black commander. The interesting thing to me is I can imagine a bunch of different ways to build her. First is the standard Zombie deck. Next is to focus on a more spellslinger build to get zombies each turn. I don't think it'll make much sense to focus on...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Gonti is an outlier btw. There are some VERY powerful commanders in this set. Gonti just isn't one of them. Really? Which ones? Gisa, the Hellraiser looks like a doubled-up Koma, Cosmos Serpent (minus the extra modes, but costs 2 less and has ward). Rakdos, the Muscle looks like Korvold, Fae-Cursed...

Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength

Final Showdown i think this is an instant include. strictly better than Rout Not technically strictly better since Rout is castable on 5, but it's definitely a great new card for us. The thing I really like is the option to cast it as a Dress Down in a pinch. Could be just enough to disrupt a combo...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Leonin Shikari

Once upon a time the only thing I wanted to do with my life was have this guy + Sunforger out at the same time and respond to everything all the time.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Well, Rags can't use lands, and half the time it exiles a nonland, that card is too expensive to cast in the moment, even if it would be useful/is a bomb. Ragavan really isn't a good comparison here since his main selling point is being a Savannah Lions with upside for a voltron build, which Gonti ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I'm not thrilled with the new Gonti, personally, but Ragavan stops being useful very swiftly as people drop blockers, Replace the evasive creatures you were going to play with equipment to make Ragavan evasive. Also, while, sure, a treasure is better than a discount of [sym=1] to a subset of spells...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Oh baby Final Showdown . It's been so long since we got a good instant-speed board wipe for Phelddagrif. I think it does a good job of exemplifying what Spree can do that couldn't be done with a different mechanic. You can use it as an Ephemeral Shields or a Dress Down if you're in a tight spot and ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I think I might have inadvertently discovered our next "film buffs vs philistines" argument: anyone else seen "Poor Things"? I wouldn't say I HATED it - it was better than "The Lobster", though that bar is so low it's in hell - but I didn't enjoy it and I definitely wou...

Re: [SCD] Pip-Boy 3000

I think the attack vs hit trigger differentiation is probably at its least relevant here. It matters a lot of something like Etali, Primal Storm since Etali is fairly large - people will naturally want to chump block rather than take 6, but then you'll still get your trigger. Chump blocking is where...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Animal Friend

Multiple 1G cards that make a squirrel in a week? Weird. This is one of those cards where the effect is reasonably strong, but it's hard to imagine where it'd be worth running. Voltron decks don't really care about making random X/X tokens, and token decks don't generally have a good evasive target ...

[SCD] Pip-Boy 3000

This card looks pretty weak to me despite the flexibility, and the popularity isn't crazy high on EDHrec. Yet it commands one of the highest prices of the set.

What do people think? Am I missing something?

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Back to Basics

Ah, nonbasic hate. One of the semi-regular discussions we get to have on this forum. In normal commander, I think these effects are overrated. Here's why. First and foremost, in order to exploit such effects you need to run few nonbasics yourself. Nonbasics are really good, though. This is especiall...

Sorrow's Path Wayta - We're Back! (this is a pun on that dinosaur animated movie from the 90s)

Golos , my beloved. Taken from us too soon. Just because you were really powerful and annoying to play against. But the dream of the Sorrow's Path deck has remained. The biggest limitation is that, without a commander that can tutor SP into play, we have to run a lot of land tutors in order to reli...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Verdant Command

Making 2 tokens is fine if that's something your deck wants. The other modes are very low-impact/niche though, so I'd never run this without wanting green Raise the Alarm already.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The War Doctor

One of the more interesting/viable doctors. That said, the synergy with any "exile cards from the top of your library until..." cards (and in particular The Day of the Doctor ) makes him reasonably scary. If they're playing Ryan Sinclair as the partner and aren't casting many spells, maybe...

Re: Aether Rift [scd]

Extraordinarily, apocalyptically awful. Maybe there's some microscopic niche where it's playable, but I'll believe it when I see it. The discard being random means that you have to stack the deck extremely densely with creatures to avoid a bad hit - and you're still going to hit lands sometimes. And...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Grave-Shell Scarab

I love the design of this card, but the years have not been kind to its power level. That said, EDHrec informs me that it does have a pretty decent use case in Amzu, Swarm's Hunger , so it's not a total zero. I could see three options to make the card more broadly relevant without changing its core ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Bogardan Hellkite

Even in Zirilan I think the card is fairly weak. They've printed quite a few similar cards by this point, so boggy is always right on the edge of playability. Basically any other deck I think has better options. For 8 mana it's really not very strong.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Odric, Blood-Cursed

@Dunadain Odric, Master Tactician is the original, not lunarch Marshall.

Marshall is obviously the most interesting of the three though. Huge downgrade for the third version.

Re: SCD: Humble Defector

Got in 4-5 games last night with materpillar 's Yurlok deck so I'll share my thoughts. Unfortunately I only drew defector once, and it was at the point in the game where a Goblin Piker was sufficient to get in the last few points of damage, so not much of a test case on that front. I did enjoy playi...

Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength

I think Teferi's Protection is a must include! a big thing ive realized in the deck is do nothing until you have to, and teferi's pro allows you to do nothing until the VERY last minute, whether its combat or combo related. then when every one else dies... its a 1v1 which is our strong suit. This i...

Re: SCD: Humble Defector

I built materpillar 's Yurlok deck and will try it out tonight. I'll be doing silent politics for the sake of simplicity, and a clean test case, I think. Was missing 4 cards but I think most of them are easily replaced. Wooded Ridgeline → Commercial District Terrifying Presence → basically any fog.....
