Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)
Took a long break since dec 2019 but getting back into poking around. Trying to find recent modern articles and the formats are so fragmented now that there is much less going on for me to get up to speed with regarding content. Specifically looking for an updated elves list with the new additions. ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Gael's Will irritates me. The ONLY positive I can see from this card is that it offers downward pressure on prices in the rest of the set. No game where this resolves is going to feel rewarding. These effects are already banned in legacy, a format that is better equipped to deal with them. The suspe...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)
In regards to void mirror, etron can tweak its mana base to deal with this. Cavern straight up negates the counter effect, but if you name eldrazi with Unclaimed Territory you can generate mana to cast your stuff while still maintaining colorless generation for where it matters. Some colored mana ro...

Re: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt speculation
We know that returns to themes can often put a slight twist on them. What would be interesting is if the DFC from this set ETB as the more powerful side (picking up off the name of the set, they come in "transformed") and opponent can do X thing to flip them and power them down ("day&...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)
Dispute is still a soft counter though, you can eventually hit a point where you can pay for it. I see what you're saying with charm, but then I'm inclined to double down on Ux instead of Uxx. 3 color decks can't hit charm consistently enough unless you heavily skew U. As for CoF ramp. T1 land, t2 l...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)
I feel like so much of what made faeries unique has been eroded by other tribes (spirits) or just creature power in general (beefier dudes and more impactful immediate value). I'm not sure CoF would help solve all the issue, but I do agree it would make a dent and is a very safe card for that deck. ...

Re: 2021 is going to be awesome. [spoilers, of course] (Updated with additional info)
The Harry Potter franchise is obviously the gorilla in the room for Strixhaven to reference but there are plenty of other examples. The college of winterhold from Skyrim could be another place they could build off of for resonance. There are a ton of college/boarding school tropes that can folded in...

Re: Zendikar Rising Lore and Story
I believe that is still the case. On a meta level they likely also kept it so it gives the Zendikar angels something to show they are zendikari. Fun fact, one angel on Zendikar lacks a Halo. Linvala is haloless. On the other hand, one human on Zendikar has a halo, Tazri. We do not know if that is c...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)
I'm a player that hates getting countered. Especially when it's a counter with upside. However, there is an important distinction I want to make. I don't mind the 1 for 1. I can't stand being locked out of a game and being forced to play 6+ more rounds while you fiddle around for a win con. I can't ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
"Considered by most"? Why? We don't have True-Name Nemesis . And under most normal circumstances, even the best of equipment is shoddy at best. Including Batterskull and the Swords of X&Y. Mainly because of what it does to board states. Even without TNN where it just speeds up the clo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
I really feel like opal had a target on it well before oko/urza in wotc eyes. They were very cautious with fast mana because it allows you to execute a game plan so much more quickly than other strats. I don't feel bad for having opal gone, it being prevalent in so many decks is a clear nod to its p...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
Losing to colorless haymakers past t4 is about the same as losing to Grapeshot or Temur Battle Rage + Death's Shadow on the same clock (or a myriad of other winning board states that can assemble in modern in that timeframe). I may be the minority here but I think Tron is fine, I really do. There re...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
Problem with snow decks is that labe just made them more consistent, they can still curve out with perfect mana for their hand and play essentially the same way and 5-0 a league. The guts of the deck are just as good, so I expect it to keep seeing results in the league results. We don't have access ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
But you are missing the point entirely. It's not THAT Jace and SFM are fine That has been said about every card that started off banned in the format. The thing is though, the difference is that Twin was in the format at one point and we have some evidence of what it does given the available answer...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
Honestly much of the recent cluster of cards that have been kinda nuts is probably pressure from the top of the food chain at WotC to give some juice to branding. Knowing that you're getting ready to roll out a huge product (arena), there really is no better way to get players excited outside of put...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
I personally don't mind the market discussion because it's intrinsically tied to the health of the format. Strong cards lead to increased demand. The price movement on almost everything except snow staples and fetches is a spot on indicator for format health. There is a ton of unrest about the forma...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
I mentioned a few times already in other threads, but I sold out of a pretty decent chunk (roughly 50-60%) of my paper staples. Checking the price of Noble Hierarch today it looks like I hit the jack pot. I sold to a store for $40 USD each and that card can be had for roughly $35-40 USD from online ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
I think the most exciting thing about the snoop combo is really pushing the deck to see how many game plans the shell can hold. I had a really fun 'dirty kitty' deck with the Gate to the Afterlife package and Hollow One in it that I played a few FNMs with. I think snoop combo can squeeze I to that d...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
Jund goblins, splashing specifically for coco, allows you to combo at instant speed with potential zero pieces on the field or in hand. The deck is very capable of playing it's combo at instant speed. Aether Vial is fine if you want RB. They have the best tribal go tall creatures ( Goblin Piledriver...

unearth and collected company are both good cards for the snoop combo to play a longer game if they consider a splash. I think the deck may have legs.

I'm just hoping it is a new planeswalker from a plane we've visited but which does not currently have planeswalker representation. if the leaks are true, the planeswalker is a man seemingly from Amonkhet. https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgcube/comments/gw9iyy/m21_basri_ket/ if this is true, he is kind of...

Re: Chandra spellbook cards and packaging
Rite of flame and pyroblast arts look great to me. I may actually buy some singles. Unfortunately there are so few great red cards that this ended up being a better list than expected. Red just doesn't seem to have the same depth of playables or chase cards the rest of the color pie has.

Re: How Often Do You Support Your Local Game Store (LGS)?
Always tried to throw a few purchases a month to the LGS as a show of thanks. Was mostly packs for years, occasional single if I saw something I wanted. What drove me away is the crowd my LGS began to attract and retain. Finally one of the owners said something inappropriate in front of one of my cu...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
Format is a dumpster fire, sure. We've always seen a handful of cards from most sets enter in the fray. Scars block have us the infect deck which has long floated between t1-2 at various points. It also gave us the fast lands, which the format hasn't exactly been shy about playing. Pod came from thi...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)
If I had one big criticism of modern for the last 12 months, I would point at the rate of change. I think strategies are being reinvented at an incredibly fast pace, but the payoffs feel like an arms race. I don't like free proactive spells. I think the force cycle from MH has been a healthy develop...
