Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

More stuff! Terror of the Peaks and Archangel of Tithes are both somewhat expensive reprints that are nice to see. Three Steps Ahead is an interesting Cancel variant - it can also provide a copy effect or filtering, which gives it a lot of flexibility. I'm always interested in counterspells that wor...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Celestial Dawn

Celestial Dawn used to combo with Zedruu the Greathearted and other Donate effects, since your opponents couldn't generate white mana unless it was in their color identity. That doesn't work anymore, fortunately. Thought Lash is another card I'll call out that functionally changed to no longer work...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Holy Cow + Bovine Intervention = has_magic_flavor_gone_too_far.jpg Freestrider Lookout looks quite strong. Definitely interested in it for Samut, who already has a bunch of ways to target stuff. Targeting opponents' stuff with Samut / Scryb Ranger / etc. feels a little weird, but I'll definitely do...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

OTJ stuff! Mechanics: Outlaws seem fine. I suspect there will be some memory issues when trying to recall which creature types are outlaws. I've seen pirate decks that already support outlaw cards, and there are a few rogue and assassin decks out there, but I don't see outlaw cards slotting into man...

Re: [SCD] Pip-Boy 3000

If you squint, Pip-Boy 3000 looks like a better Coalition Relic - it costs three mana to play and equip, and gives back two mana every turn. If you don't need the mana, you can loot or pump the equipped creature instead, plus it has all the usual equipment / one mana artifact synergies. I don't thin...

Re: Paying Costs

Three things come to mind: I think this should be a 'whenever' and create a triggered ability. The 'if' clause makes this read like a replacement effect, which feels incorrect. The 'would cause' text is weird. There are only three cards that have that wording, and two of them - Rain of Gore and Unpr...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Back to Basics

Fun fact: I traded a foil Paradox Engine for my copy of Back to Basics . This was when Paradox Engine was still legal, and both were close enough in price to do a straight trade - I think around $30 or so? Paradox engine was banned soon afterwards and I felt like a genius... then B2B got reprinted a...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Verdant Command

Verdant Command looks like a miss to me. Charms and commands tend to play better than they read due to the extra flexibility, but I'm not sure if that is enough to save it. 'Make two tokens + gain 3 life' is a fine default, but I don't think I would run it just for those modes in most decks. I woul...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The War Doctor

The War Doctor looks fine. He's a repeatable source of burn / removal, assuming you can get a few time counters on him. Throw in Norin the Wary or some other repeatable source of flicker, plus some extra combats, and I could see you burning out opponents without too much difficulty. There are proba...

Re: Aether Rift [scd]

Random discard is bad. Punisher effects are bad. Aether Rift looks atrociously bad. I won't say it it impossible for the card to work, but I am certainly dubious. You would need to be playing at an extremely casual table, or be putting enough pressure on your opponents' life totals for the life loss...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Nezumi Graverobber

I like Nezumi Graverobber // Nighteyes the Desecrator 's design, but I will agree that it is too slow these days. Withered Wretch and Tymaret, Chosen from Death are better on the front side, while paying five mana on the backside looks poor compared to stuff like Archpriest of Shadows and Drana, the...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Grave-Shell Scarab

Grave-Shell Scarab looks like a card that made more sense when damage was on the stack. Trade with an opposing creature, draw a card with damage on the stack, then dredge it back to repeat the process... seems like a reasonable grindy option. I think it's too slow these days though. 4/4 for 5 is pr...

Re: rate commanders you've played for physical complication

Rating my own decks from least physically / logistically complicated to most complicated: Easy Samut, Voice of Dissent - the objectively simplest deck to play - the deck's name is 'Play Dudes, Turn Sideways'. (more seriously, it's a deck built around tapping and untapping stuff repeatedly - I would ...

Breaker of Chains 3WR Creature - Giant Warrior Breaker of Chains enters the battlefield with two -1/-1 counters on it. Whenever Breaker of Chains attacks, you may remove a -1/-1 counter from a permanent you control. When you do, Breaker of Chains gets +2/+2 until end of turn and deals 2 damage to e...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Bogardan Hellkite

Bogardan Hellkite is a card I don't see myself playing. I think there are much stronger versions of this effect available - Dragonlord Atarka is a pretty direct upgrade, but Scourge of Valkas and Terror of the Peaks are also better Dragonstorm payoffs. Eight mana is also a lot, and numerous playabl...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Odric, Blood-Cursed

Odric, Blood-Cursed seems pretty underwhelming. Theoretically, you could have a bunch of creatures with keywords and generate a bunch of blood tokens... but then what? Blood tokens have relatively low inherent value, so you'll probably also want a payoff for artifact tokens, such as Ghirapur Aether...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Keeper of the Accord

I recently had a game where I kept a dodgy 2-lander. I never drew a third land... but I did draw Keeper of the Accord and Animate Dead . I ended up reanimating it after discarding to hand size, and within a turn or two I had just as many lands as my opponents, if not more. I think Keeper is pretty g...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Thicket Elemental

I played it for many, many years, before it was finally obsoleted by Last One Standing. And, similarly now, The Nipton Lottery. Tough card to obsolete, and even then it still has it's strong uses as an instant speed surgical strike (remember you don't need to hit everything, just everything that bo...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Fire Covenant

Judith, Carnage Connoisseur says hi, but I guess she also has more efficient board wipes . Fire Covenant seems strong, and I could see myself picking up a copy if/when it ever gets a reprint. I think Toxic Deluge is generally better unless you really want to keep your own creatures alive - it costs...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Edit: honestly, I think the permanent restriction is the biggest killer that definitely wasn't necessary. That means that you usually won't be able to get someone's spot removal or boardwipes out of this, which is a significant negative to the card. I wonder if it's a text length issue - instants a...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Tinybones, the Pickpocket looks fun. Not amazing - any expendable 1/1 token can threaten a trade - but it comes down early and can generate some nice value. Reminds me a bit of Gonti, Lord of Luxury . Throw on some equipment for first strike or Viridian Longbow and you have some nice additional uti...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Flatline

Flatline gets a hard pass from me due to the fact that it doesn't stop Craterhoof Behemoth or other Overrun effects. I guess you can stop Overwhelming Stampede specifically, but otherwise it's a miss. I would actually prefer Polymorphist's Jest due to its additional ability to remove abilities (alt...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Memory Deluge

I like Memory Deluge in cube, but I'm a bit less enthusiastic about it in EDH. It's not necessarily bad, but it doesn't really lean into any of my blue decks' synergies - Sharuum and Kess prefer dumping extra cards in the graveyard with Fact or Fiction , while Thada and Mizzix prefer to cast Pull fr...
