Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

While I agree with pretty much everything here, I do take issue with the alternate game plan. While the Goblins are pretty bad, Pestermite dies to a light sneeze and attacking for 1 on the ground is real a tough way to win games. The opponent has to have nothing, or you have to have every possible ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I think some of you are grossly underestimating the tempo impact that lead to Twin being an actual deck. You could be playing a Turn 3 combo kill right now, with better supporting cards, if you really wanted to. Its called Knightfall, and it even plays Blue and Green. This deck wont be good enough, ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

A turn 3 oops is generally enough to be competitive.

EDIT: Not to say, top tier, but Knightfall won me a lot of games off of the Turn 3 combo.

They are (the UG core) going to likely define the game until banned.

Every format, but Vintage.

So essentially, since Legacy threats are Moderns, without FoW, Daze, Ponder, and Brainstorm, meaning unless Modern becomes Legacy, it's stuck...

I don't know, seems to me Astrolabe and Uro are the issue.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I guess that is the question. Is it inevitable that a format will collapse under the weight of its history and card pool, to eventually achieve something of a stasis, or is it preferred that there is just a revolving door of new busted decks? Personally, I don't believe it needs be this way, but I'm...

Eh, it does, but I cashed out long ago, I just cant think of buying back in unless all the UR core cratered to pennies.

You can play more Historic than you can Paper anything. Thats about all there is to say about that. :p

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I dunno, I really fear for the future of Modern. Pioneer, yeah, it will have the spotlight when it will added into Arena. But Modern, I think they just don't care that much now. It's not that they don't care at all. It's that the shiny, new toy is Historic. And it comes with a very healthy metagame...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Can anyone fill me in on why Sanctuary, removed from the current UGx base/discussion, could be seen as too much?

I run 2 in UR, with a Deprive and 2 Cryptic for support.

Is the card itself too strong, or just in a very specific context?

If the format shifts towards heavier GY hate, making Uro weaker, then Stoneblade will be the best version of the deck.
How freely could one take a Uro focused list, and simply put the Stoneblade package (how many cards?) into the sideboard for post board?

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Edit: Even just looking back over those cards listed.... Torpor Orb and Suppression Field sound like they would be NUTS today. With so many ETBs and activated abilities, why does no one play em? Or does the shift away from symmetrical effects mean people would rather have things like WAR walkers th...

idSurge Ulamog wanted to join the fun, so it followed you there. just kidding. I remember you dislike the eldrazi.. >< well, surely there are other decks in historic that are not ula decks? Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Right, do that for every deck now for the past 5-6 years. Other than Ixalan block, every deck has gained cards from the past few sets, so that argument isn't even relevant. Jund has changed. Tron has changed. Every deck has gained a huge amount of cards to play. Your going to need to quantify that....

I saw a lot of games where UW also smashed Tron however. There is a strong enough core foot UW.

It's just outclassed by Snow right now.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

It wasnt main RIP that made UW playable.

It was meta's which where soft to either Terminus, or T3f + FoN + Jace, being enough to take over the game.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Banning it likely 'fixes' the power level of Uro and Snake? If it forces people into actual respectable mana bases, and allows Moon to be at least somewhat (I know we both know the power of Moon) playable?

Like I know what your saying, but Astrolabe is a perfectly fine step one ban.

So yea, it probably boils down to being Astrolabe's "fault" because that card makes enabling Sanctuary so trivial.
If there is a single card that should go, its Astrolabe. It does a whole lot in the meta.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

There is nothing fair, about Uro. :) Its a card which checks all the boxes. 1. Hits every applicable axis of value. Cards, Life, Lands. 2. Does not care about removal on the first cast, while generating instant value if it is not countered. 3. If countered, is a recurring threat, which against gener...

I will echo somebody above me: how everybody isn't verbally burning down WotC HQ is beyond me. And great, now they are printing an ok-powered set that for once doesn't turn modern on its head. That doesn't erase all the crazy stuff that's already in the format. They have been. However, when it was ...

In other news, I'm a huge fan of Goblin Wizardry. Not convinced it's playable, it probably isn't to be honest but it seems like a fun card.
Something for a Prowess deck to bring in against grindy opponents?

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Yeah, my problem is not that it even suppresses anything. My problem is at a philosophical level with it. :p My problem is Tron and Dredge and all sorts of decks which have no business getting access to counterspells get to play preemptive Cryptic Command against me for 1 mana. I had a match the ot...
